This scene is a great example of the mistake people made with cgi early on. With the robe on, the creature actually doesn't look terrible today, the tracking is a little off, but it's photo real. It's uncanny, but that actually helps. When they show the full creature is where the illusion really breaks. Because they were flaunting their cgi, not realizing how bad it would look in the future. It's the shots where the filmmakers try to obscure the visual effects that actually look better.

The thing is, when they were on that other ship, they downloaded a route to Alpha Prime. At the end of the movie, they uploaded the star maps targeting for the planet. Of course, they said they hoped the hyperdrive was going to take them there. So I wonder where they would end up. Would they be sent to Alpha Prime immediately or be sent somewhere else? If they did end up at Alpha Prime, I'm sure their next adventure would happen there dealing with aliens. Possibly being the home of those spiders and no one on Earth ever knew about that.

What about something like the poodle moth? When it was discovered, people people who saw images of it were doubtful that it was a real creature, and this is a local terrestrial creature from Earth, and not a wildly different alien species that has entirely different elemental composition from anything in our world.

Spider Smith definitely freaked me out when I was a kid, especially when he opens the mouth, showing the multiple rows of teeth ...
The idea for the spiders' reproduction strategy was definitely intriguing though: the adult spiders chase their victims relentlessly but laws of probability dictate that at least one of the victims is bound to survive, although most likely not without suffering from a scratch or bite. The affected individual is then turned into a sort of king (or queen) spider and is also endowed with many of the spiders' abilities and powers, which make it more likely to survive and breed new spiders!
I always wondered what would happen if these spider encountered the xenomorphs!

I remember how hyped my dad was for this movie when I was little. He took me to see this movie and while as a kid I loved it this scene creeped me out. Here I am years later and boy the CGI looks hasnt aged well. Film makers showed to much of it during this scene. I cant even say this was even fully passable for 98. Jurassic Park, and Godzilla had better CGI. I'll still give it a pass because it took Hollywood a bit to craft it. The 90s were part of the roots. Filmmakers learned from mistakes of the old CGI and made progression and how it should be used. This movie still remains part of my childhood.

    • @BlueGriffin20

Not really. Look where the second cut was. On the egg sacks. That released the spiders. He could have been injured plenty of times, but as long as they were still in there it was fine. What‘s harder to believe is that the race from birth/genetically knows about eating their wounded instead of learning it during their life
