I find it really stresses the latches by carrying it completely assembled. I almost always carry the fore and aft sections in two trips right to the waters edge and clamp together there. Thanks so much for your videos, they've been really helpful for me. I agree with other comments regarding open water self rescue, a good paddle float is a must. Thanks again!
Yes it definitely does stress the latches.. but I haven't really had any issues. I usually pack all my gear in my kayak by the store so it has less weight. Really happy you enjoyed this video!
Received mine on Monday and I have installed the braces, I have practiced putting it together and taking apart and packing, I also labelled each of the 6 section, I have 2024 which is 49 lbs, 22.2kg. I bought it as I wanted touring kayak that was portable as I don’t have storage space for full size touring kayak.
The lighter one will definitely make a difference! Like you, I also don’t have any storage space so I invested in the Pakayak. I’m sure you’ll love it lots!!!
Such an awesome review!! I totally agree with all points mentioned - especially the secondary stability. The primary stability feels pretty solid but I haven’t intentionally tested the secondary stability too much because to be honest, I didn’t want to take a swim, lol! The weight can be a workout especially when going up stairs (as in 3 flights of stairs, 🙄 lol), but to me it’s worth it to be able to pack it up in my car. Since I went from the Advanced Elements inflatable kayak (which I still enjoy for relaxed easy paddles or when camping), the upgrade to the larger hardshell was totally worth it for longer distance paddles. And the performance keeps up with other sea kayaks in my group without struggle. Also, big congrats to you on successfully rolling!! 🙌😄 Love your videos - your visuals are always stunning! I hope to share some kayak & camp videos soon as well.
Thank you! Oh I can’t imagine taking the Pakayak three flights up.. it must be quite a challenge. I once took it up a long flight of stairs and then had to rest quite a while before moving on 😂 but definitely agree that it’s all worthwhile.. just being on the water is worth it. I look forward to your kayak and camping videos!
Another excellent video! I concur with your opinions and conclusions. One additional aspect; I have paddled a 15' Necky Kyook, which is considered a good touring yak (for a roto-molded HPDE unit) for years. It weighed 60 lbs and was too long to roof rack when towing my camper. My Pakayak is just as fast, transports in the back of the SUV, and doesn't take up so much space in the garage.
Great to know you share the same thoughts! It's really a game changer now how we can now pack our kayaks in our trunks. If anyone told me that there would be modular/folding kayaks 20 years ago, I'd say they were crazy. So fortunate to have a kayak like the Pakayak so we can go touring!
HK was an awesome place. I havent seen it in 12-13 years but was my favorite place in asia. I wish i could have stayed there more long term because the islands there are wonderful. thanks for the vid.
Great review! I appreciate your kind and humble personality and the way you provide an honest and non judgemental point of view. Thank you for sharing your valuable insights. I’m a new subscriber and look forward to more reviews! Safe paddling my friend 🙏
I just bought this boat with their black friday sale and got $350 off. really excited for this boat. I wish I could have used my yearly health and wellness reimbursement to get another $300 off from my employer but I had already spent that benefit this year to get golf clubs. lol.
Another way to transport your pakayak to the water is to make two trips and carry it in halves (30 pounds each). I am a small female without a cart who often kayaks alone. The pakayak has become my preferred kayak over my smaller, lighter female-oriented Perception kayak of less than 40 pounds. I actually row faster in the pakayak than my other yak and it's more comfortable on long day paddles. I'm over 50 years old and so far, no one has passed me :-) I've never tipped over in this boat, although every male who has borrowed it has :-) I must be lower to the center of gravity at 5 feet 4 inches. I have not tried rolling in it- but I should. I find I do not need thigh braces even though I am very small. I am comfortable using my hips for balance.
That’s an excellent point transporting it in half.. I actually do that quite often too but failed to mention it in the video! I’m really happy you paddle with the Pakayak. It’s funny how the guys all flipped.. coincidence or not? 😅 you should try rolling and would love to hear your experience. I recently bought some EVA foam to put my seat an inch higher so I can almost do a back deck roll.. well, I have to try it :) really appreciate your comment!
I should add that another reason I like just carrying and loading thirds or halves of this kayak instead of stacking back into the case when I'm done is that its faster, and I can let the kayak air dry in my car if it's wet. Its difficult to thoroughly remove water from all the crevices after stacking the 6 parts upright. I've had a little bit of rust on my latches from the one time I forgot to unpack the boat when I got home. Probably because I'd just finished a long day flying with it! I coated the latches with WD 40 after that and always unpack it once I'm home to thoroughly dry overnight. If the shore or boat launch is crowded when I end a day, I quickly load up my car in thirds or halves, skip the roller case, and get outta there. I expose less of the gaskets to dirt and sand. I use two towels and somehow still get sand, dirt or mud on the edges when I load up the yak into the sak.
@@VelvetElvis99 Thx, great points. I was thinking of flying with P in 2 different bags. Less weight per bag of course and also less confusing to TSA and airline. Your thoughts?
Great video again. :) One drawback regarding Pakayak: if you capsize and fall out of the cockpit, cowboy re-entry is difficult on flat water, and even harder on choppy water. Also the cockpit gets swamped when you capsize and getting rid of that water is not an easy task, even less so in choppy water. So safety wise if you go sea-kayaking with a Pakayak it's definitely best to have someone tag along, especially if you go far from the shore.
Some very good points! I couldn't do the cowboy re-entry unless I used a paddle float.. but then again, I only practiced this rescue on the Pakayak and not any other kayaks so I can't really compare.
Hi, could you elaborate on why cowboy re-entry is difficult with the Pakayak ? I'm looking to sell my Oru to switch to something else because it's too difficult to self rescue in the Oru, I had hoped that the Pakayak would be better in this regard
@@rubeus90 the higher volume cockpit means you are higher which means the centre of gravity is higher when on top so balance is more difficult. Use the paddle float. Small paddlers would have an easier time as they dont raise the centre of gravity as much and can get into the cockpit quicker.
I loved the idea of the inflatable kayak (as seen in picture) due to it comes in a bag and can go in a car easy, I use it to surf waves included and at sea in Maine sometimes. I challenge it haha. Anyway, I would say that if the shore is not near car. Wheel the bag right to the spot, put it together and then leave the bag in the car. That’s the optimal way to carry it around. When you come back, you go get bag out of car and take it apart and travel again.
I opted to get the Point 65 Mercury GTX segmented kayak. I like it well enough, but even though it is segmented, it still takes up a lot of room, especially compared to the Pakayak. They Pakayak is about $400 more, but if I had it to do over again, I might choose the Pakayak just because it has a smaller storage footprint. I might eventually end up getting it anyway. :)~ Also, a good option for transporting your Pakayak from your car to the water solo is the RAILBLAZA C-Tug Kayak and Canoe Trolley Cart. It is supposed to be able to easily disassemble and be stored in one of your kayak's bulkheads.
Maybe you can sell your Point Mercury and get the Pakayak 😉😉 thanks for the suggestion on the cart! I am lucky enough to be pretty close to the shore whenever I go kayaking so I assemble the Pakayak right by the water. Definitely better to have a friend to help
GREAT information. I really want one and have been looking at them for a while now, however as I live in the UK the shipping and import duty tax would bring the price to around £3000 so impossible for me to pick one up at this time. Also you have just got another subscriber. 👍
Thank you! That's going to be a hard choice. I also looked at the Oru Coast XT and it looks like a great kayak. Eventually I bought the Pakayak as I already had a folding kayak (Tucktec) and wanted a proper hard shelled kayak. I am sure you'll enjoy either one! I have plenty of Pakayak videos on my channel so you can also take a look at those if it helps :)
Hi.. I wouldn’t be able to give you any insights to inflatables as I haven’t tried any. There’s a website called “Air On the Water” and he uses Decathlon kayaks and they are his go to kayaks. Check his page out!
Great 8 month review! I have seen a few of your videos on this boat and they are all informative and entertaining, good work, keep them coming. A small comment on the price, I live in Canada and I can get this for 2600.00 CAD and while it is expensive, any other hard shell touring Kayak would cost me between 1500.00 and 3000.00 anyway. Then there is the issue of transporting, I would need a good rack, something I would feel secure with, that is another 1000.00 easy (Thule) so add that to the cost. Then there is the traveling with it, parked over night at a hotel for example, I would be worried all the time with my 2000.00 Kayak strapped to the roof of my car, is it safe from theft? I can roll the Pakayak into my hotel room, or leave it locked up inside the car. Lastly, storage, I don't have the storage space for a 14 foot Kayak so for me, I can throw it in my closet and then in my car for a day of paddling, great! I though of inflatables, was looking at the Sea Eagle 393rl and while it is a nice boat with more than enough capacity for storing all my camping gear, there is the problem of mold which is always there with an inflatable, not so with the Pakayak. As for the Oru, no thank you, far too many issues and way too long to setup. I just think when you look at all the benefits of the Pakayak and compare the pros and cons, it is still a good value. One more comment, I have heard a lot of people talk about leaking and buckles rusting in salt water. That was true on the original version, the Pakayak 14. With the new version, the 142, they have eliminated those issues, the buckles are now stainless steel, the seels are marine grade silicon and even the manufacturing process is improved. It is an amazing boat, I will be picking one up next season and I can't wait. I have been looking at portable kayaks for over a year now and have investigated many of them, gone on forums and asked questions, as far as I am concerned, this is the best bang for the buck. EDIT: I still don't have my Pakayak, some financial issues have caused a delay and the price has gone up to about 3k. I still think for me it is the best option and I am still interested in it, hopefully next year! I'm out paddling, my friend still in his canoe and me in my 10 foot rec kayak photos.app.goo.gl/1hiseL1irAwUwnRK7 Wish me luck, I really want this boat, next year we plan on moving so I will not have any space at all for storing even a 10 foot kayak, never mind a 14 foot so I absolutely need to get this!
Hi! Thanks for your comment! Really appreciate it support. I got the Pakayak for many of the same reasons as you. I can’t for you to get one and use it. I am sure you’ll love it and have many great adventures
I have seen a lot of videos talking about the weight of the pakayak, is it much more than a fully molded boat? Or is it just that tuctek and oru are so much lighter
Hi.. I think it’s all relative to personal expectations :) the Tucktec and Oru are definitely lighter but compared to 1 piece kayaks, depends on what type you’re comparing to and the size. So it’s all relative!
Nice video! I see the sprayskirt you are wearing is the one the Pakayak sells. I just want to know if you don't have any issues like leaking while rolling. Thank you!
Hi.. from what I am aware of, all spray skirts will have some level of water seeping in. In saying that, the one that Pakayak sells is the Nylon one which is great for just paddling around, however not the best if you’re trying to roll. I had leaks after 1-2 rolls and it also came off a few times. I just purchased a neoprene one from SEALS (they also make the Pakayak spray skirts size 2.2). I haven’t tried it on water yet but have tried it on land and it felt good! Will share a video soon with the new spray skirt :)
Good review, your skills are developing well, it took me years before i had a reliable roll. Yes outfitting with extra padding makes all the difference. I suspect you have more storage space than you realise behind the seat, provided you use a drybag for your gear. No kayak is perfect, the best one is the boat you are siting in today.
That's for sure.. if I am on the water paddling, it's already a great day no matter which kayak I'm on! The padding surely helped alot.. I felt more secure rather than rolling around in the cockpit.
hi, i am a hong konger too considering trak 2.0 vs pakayak since you mention the rollability, it seem trak 2.0 has much more performance (and lighter), why do you choose the pakayak?
Hi! I wanted a hard shell and I also saw that people have been waiting for the Trak since 2019…. I actually ordered the Trak in Jan 2022 and it still hasn’t arrived
I did end up getting the tucktec, the 2021 model is really nice but i wish there was a elevated seating option. I used a homemade one and it was ok, but NOT recommended... At least, not the chair i used. It was too wide. But for fishing on lakes like i do, its so stable, and it has so much room for my pole and tackle, anchor, i could probably even put my little cooler in it and be great.
I heard the GCI Sitbacker is quite good for the Tucktec and they sell it on Amazon although it’s not elevated but with better back support. I haven’t tried it but my friend recommended it to me.
@@Fishaholicboy i think what im going to do is get a stadium chair similar to the GCI and set it on top of a milk crate. I think a milk crate will fit over or in the mounting brackets for the seat.
@@Fishaholicboy it will likely be a few days until the weather clears enough i can take it out again, once i do if it works well ill come back and let you know.
I don’t have that much comparison but I felt the Pakayak was quite easy for me to re-entry. The cockpit is large it’s easy to get on. In terms of balance, it is quite wide but the deck is a little higher because of the modular design and can lose a little bit of balance. I use the GP as an outrigger so that helps!
I wouldn’t use the Pakayak for fishing. There’s not much space and you would want stability for fishing. Depending on the condition you fish, the Tucktec has plenty of room to hold your gear. I used it for fishing before and it was very good
@@Fishaholicboy fantastic thank you very much! I actually have a Tucktec on order and this confirms what I suspected. Really like your videos. Subscribed.
I had read that the Pakayak tends to veer the second you stop paddling ? Has that been an issue for you ? Curious how it tracks w/o a rudder ? If so would you recommend their rudder ? Thx.
I actually have no issues but again it depends on the weather conditions you’re paddling in as well as ones paddling technique. I didn’t get the rudder as it’s self installation and I’m hopeless with my hands 😂 also, I find that maintenance could be an issue. I use my paddle to manage the kayak and I find it easier to manage with Greenland paddles as you can extend one side longer just by holding the paddle different.
I had no idea there was a join in the cockpit...Does water leak in at all? Now that I see how loose you are in the cockpit its even more impressive that you can roll it...well done.
No leaks so far! It's actually been really great and it's given me so much in terms of being able to enjoy the water and paddling. I have quite a bit of foam pads to help me get a better fit but I still fall out quite a bit when I try to roll haha
I'm 16 and I want to get a pakayak so I can fish deeper waters or structures inaccessible by foot, my mom thinks it's outrageous, what can I do to convince her? Wow imagine owning a pakayak feels like owning car just way cooler
I think a good start is to do some kayaking courses.. they are invaluable which don’t only teach you paddling skills techniques, but more importantly safety. A lot of people will think kayaking isn’t safe and it can be if we don’t take precautions and prepare for the worst. I’m sure you can find somewhere local to do some classes!
Hi and thanks, Fishaholicboy for this very informative video. Pakayak looks sleek, fast, and long, 14ft? I look forward to watching you in it paddling with your precious paddle. I have never rolled under the water.😭😭😭
Hi! It’s 14ft 2in. It’s not long nor is it short :) I suppose rolling gets quite specific.. I only know the one roll but for those Greenland Rolling competitions, there are more than 50!

Hi.. from what I am aware of, all spray skirts will have some level of water seeping in.
@@Fishaholicboy Thank you, and I can't wait to see~ :)
@@Fishaholicboyneoprene is excellent compared to nylon
Good review, your skills are developing well, it took me years before i had a reliable roll. Yes outfitting with extra padding makes all the difference. I suspect you have more storage space than you realise behind the seat, provided you use a drybag for your gear. No kayak is perfect, the best one is the boat you are siting in today.
That's for sure.. if I am on the water paddling, it's already a great day no matter which kayak I'm on! The padding surely helped alot.. I felt more secure rather than rolling around in the cockpit.
1. Sweep/ Press/ Sculling
2. Hip Flick, get the kayak over the bal. point.
3. Alway keep your head/ear stick to your shoulder.
hi, i am a hong konger too
considering trak 2.0 vs pakayak
since you mention the rollability, it seem trak 2.0 has much more performance (and lighter), why do you choose the pakayak?
Hi! I wanted a hard shell and I also saw that people have been waiting for the Trak since 2019…. I actually ordered the Trak in Jan 2022 and it still hasn’t arrived
@@Fishaholicboy wow, i also saw that, cant believe its still happening today
wish u will get the trak soon and make us a review
@@bbc42211 oh my god, I just received an email from Trak saying I should receive within 10 days! Woohoo
😂 where's the review @@Fishaholicboy
Good explanation, even a non-kayaker like me can understand and relate to it 👍
That's great to know.. thanks for sharing that feedback. I try not to use too much kayaking "language" so that people can understand.
what kind of PADDLE is he (are you) using at 2:24
The red paddle at 2:24 is the Gearlab Akiak Greenland Paddle. I made a video here about that paddle: ruclips.net/video/Du3m1KVcNP4/видео.html
Good details!
Thank you! Hope you got the information you wanted
@@sinisterace5272 Cool! Just be careful though, the higher you are, the less stable it becomes! Would love to see how it looks too!
@@Fishaholicboy it will likely be a few days until the weather clears enough i can take it out again, once i do if it works well ill come back and let you know.
Hip Flick first and Ear/Head stick to the rolling side, it's help you to roll better.
Thanks for the tip! Appreciate it!
As an option to rolling(which I have always struggled with), how does this kayak perform with wet exit and re-entry?
I don’t have that much comparison but I felt the Pakayak was quite easy for me to re-entry. The cockpit is large it’s easy to get on. In terms of balance, it is quite wide but the deck is a little higher because of the modular design and can lose a little bit of balance. I use the GP as an outrigger so that helps!
Is it possible to go fishing on this? It looks like the answer is no based on the tight cockpit.
Subscribed.
Wow thanks again for sharing .we'll detailed.sending support.
I'm pretty sure you went to all these places before!
Time flies !
That’s for sure!
i would like to know the pakayak seat room size
Hi John.. you can see it on their website here:
pakayak.com/shop/bluefin-142-kayak/?attribute_pa_color=surf
Look for cockpit size
@@Fishaholicboy thx
@@Fishaholicboy Excellent points, I fully agree !
I had no idea there was a join in the cockpit...Does water leak in at all? Now that I see how loose you are in the cockpit its even more impressive that you can roll it...well done.
No leaks so far! It's actually been really great and it's given me so much in terms of being able to enjoy the water and paddling. I have quite a bit of foam pads to help me get a better fit but I still fall out quite a bit when I try to roll haha
do you have that under 500sqft HK apartment? Do a house tour, very interested in how you store these things in such a small living space
Fortunately for me, I can keep my Pakayak at the car park so I don't need to keep it in the house or else it would take up half my home 😅
In Hong Kong you better buy a Kayak you like looking at, because it's going to be part of the living room furniture. Lol
Haha that’s for sure! I can hang my clothes on the Pakayak 😂😂
😅😅😅
The newer ones are 10lbs lighter which is very helpful for me.
I think this was a great move by Pakayak. Lighter the better
@Fishaholicboy I agree
Hey fish do you feel like the pak sits low in the water?
I think it's ok and not too low.
@@Fishaholicboythank you❤
Trak might harder to roll due to the high back deck / coaming.
Ah right… I saw your video with the lean back rolls with the trak. Forward finishing rolls look good on it though
@@Fishaholicboy thanks, I really appreciate it
And never kayak alone, or go without telling your loved ones where you'll be and what time to expect you back.
Eskimo rolls are getting more and more natural~~ ^^b
haha thanks! I definitely need to keep improving and learn some other rolls.
@@Fishaholicboy What? There are so many ways to roll under the water. I know of only one way, "CAPSIZED." 😅😅
