Great video and outing! amazingly I have collected a very similar kit. Nice to see the Savotta Finnish Defense Forces mat in use. It kept me alive for a year in the service. Same exact Carinthia D4 bag for me. And I've just bought the Snugpak SF bivvy in XL size. I'll try that up in the mountains when it gets colder. But based on your comments if it doesn't really work on its own, I can revert back to my Dutch army hooped bivy that's similar to your MSS in this video, being 3-layer goretex laminated.
How are you finding the Snugpack SF XL bivvi in regards to condensation and water proofing for both summer and winter? I'm looking to get an ultralight bivvi to go with my hammock and tarp set up to stop dew and frost from soaking my sleeping bag
@ so far so good ! It blocked morning dew condensation. It didn’t seem to go through the bivy and my sleeping bag was dry inside. I’m conscious of not breathing inside the system; keeping my mouth always properly outside. I haven’t tested it in a downpour by itself. I’ll always have some tarp over it. But splashes and dew etc have been fine. The XL is definitely NOT too big. I’m glad I didn’t buy the regular as it wouldn’t have fit me. I’ve used both the Snugpak jungle bag, and Carinthia Defense 4 inside the bivy. Both fit well
@FumblingArborist Awesome thanks! I just ordered the XL bivvi to go with my tarp set up. Ive had multiple rain and snow backyard test overnighters that forced me to bail because the feet portion of my sleeping bag got wet and frozen from spray coming under the tarp and woke me up shivering. It's really hard to find an ultralight waterproof bivvi for us tall people.
Hi!, The bag is great! I always seem to gravitate towards the USMC one. It's a bit heavy but it's bomb proof. This one was an eBay one, its had a couple of repairs but it works fine. You can get a repro one but it's not Gortex. Thanks for watching Atb G🐾
I would agree except too much time in this video is spent on eating and all that goes along with that. Why I watch videos like this is to learn what it is that I need to know in order to go winter camping in a bivvy bag. As an adult, I already know how to eat but what I would like to know is the preparation that one should to do to survive in a bivvy in snow. This video falls short in the preparation category.
Hi and thanks for watching! That particular Bivvy is a US Military Gortex one. Whilst I did cover my head with it I didn't fasten it down which meant I only had a very small patch of condensation just where I was breathing. I do have a Snugpak Special Forces Bivvy Bag bit mainly use this as a protective cover for my sleeping bag. An example would be that I'm of to Scotland in a couple of weeks and will be camping in the snow, inside the tent will have some slight condensation so the SF Bivvy Bag just stops your sleeping bag getting slightly damp. I've never managed to use a Snugpak Bivvy Bag as it's intended as I can never seem to get the hood part to cinch up tight enough. Also the centre zip is terrible for catching as you're trying to zip it up.
@@bravogolfoscar was asking because i like the middle zipper lol, makes it easier to get in and out when in a hammock, was thinking of installing a zipper from an old BA sleeping bag onto a BA bivvy bag and then seam sealing it, but having trouble getting hold of the large BA bivvy bag, so i can create a flap over the zip and still have room inside, looks like i will have more work cut out for me installing an extra flap.
I have actually put a zipper in a BA Bivvy bag, I opted for a waterproof zip which then didn't require a storm flap. It's on loan at the moment bit when it's back I'll take some pictures for you.
@@bravogolfoscar how has the zip held up so far? the reason i said snugpak before is that was what was in your description and followed the amazon link, phone screen was too small to see the bivvy, lol.
@@JohnSmith-df4vb The zip has help up well! It was put in by a seamstress and double stitched. I then used heat seal tape over the sticking on the inside.
Hi, I'm sorry that the vid appears to be too dark for you. I've checked it on both my phone and on my t.v. It doesn't seem to bad or at least it's watchable. Unfortunately shooting at night can be difficult with the limited equipment i can carry in, I tried to light it as best I could. Hope this hasn't put you off checking out the channel in future. Thanks for checking out the vid. Atb G🐾

Awesome can't beat a winter bivvy camp, I'm jealous of the usmc bivvy, it looks top notch gear.

What lighter were you using? Looked like a great but of kit!!! Doing a bivy camp in that weather is a bit mad but something to be proud of!!!
Hi mate! The lighter in question is this one!
