It's crazy how much more "star wars" Kotor felt like than modern movies, and even games. It's a shame to see it in such a state these days. Great video!
@@couchmoba honestly, i'd love to play (or create one if i could) a KOTOR spin-off game. Hello Sir, wanted to say that I really enjoy your video and that I agree with all your points that you made. KOTOR is a game that I played as a kid with my father, something him and I loved back then. I also wanted to let you know in case you didn't, I have been able to play KOTOR and KOTOR 2 on Steam and they both work fine for me, oddly enough I see both those games have small kilobyte updates just about every week so that leads me to believe they are keeping the games playable, so I hope you're able to play them again if you wish. Take care!
Me too, however I think it's an optimization problem. So some PCs work and some don't, regardless of how powerful the PC is. I also know it isn't just me but other creators and friends can't get it working either. Really glad you still get to enjoy it, but that's not the case for everyone and I'm afraid it's going to get worse with time. I will say, I can get KOTOR2 working smoothly with mods and its still amazing today!

I still wish they would’ve given us a KOTOR3 instead of ToR. But they saw the money that WoW was bringing in, and wanted to jump on the MMO bandwagon. I know ToR has its people that love it, but nothing comes close to the storytelling and the immersion that comes with the template of KOTOR 1&2. And now, We have Disney wanting to jump into the old republic. I guess they want to ruin another time period of Star Wars 🤦♂️
I know this works for some people but my sibling and friends and I haven't been as lucky. I've patched and modded plenty of games and I can't get KOTOR working. The issue is, even when I could get it working on my old rig, my friends were still turned off by the crashes and barrier to play. It's high time for a fix, fan-made or not, to help make the game accessible to modern audiences. Happy you get to play it tho!
I just finished KOTOR2 for the first time yesterday. While I loved it, it left so much to be desired, and that’s compounded with my feeling of indifference towards Star Wars as a whole now.
I guess KOTOR I and II were made by fans that actually respected the source material. So much so that they managed to create an entire setup three thousand years before the movies canon so they wouldn't interfere with it but wouldn't be "bound" to it. And that respect translates into the story-telling which is so immersive that you can ignore the "old" graphics. And the way the past movies and series went, I feel like this remake will not respect the source material and will cause ripples all along. And tbh, SWToR wasn't a worthy sequel to KOTOR I and II in regards as a Spiritual Successor, and that was mostly due the lack of thought and soul the game has. And given Lucasfilm most recent works, I can only imagine how a remake would be...
Honestly, I don't have high hopes for any remake with Star Wars' new direction. I like some of the new ideas, but can't stand a lot of the execution or nonexistent attention to detail or respect for what was. However, I'll contend that SWTOR is a marvel of a work, in a very different way from kotor. It'll get its own video explaining everything it does well, but it's defo not as personal as kotor, nor as universal. A quick summary would be, It's highs are high as hell and the lows are overtly troupey and gag worthy. It's not KOTOR3, but it's very charming at times and I love its universe and concept enough to stand the choppier parts.
The Old Republic was fleshed out in comics before Bioware made the first KOTOR, but Bioware were definitely fans and were trying to make a sequel to those comics. And Kotor 2 was actually written by someone who wasn't a big fan of Star Wars. Chris Avellone took the job to make KOTOR's sequel without knowing anything past having seen the movies once or twice. But he took it seriously, read the lore to understand what he was making, and Kotor 2's interesting take on the setting came from him being afraid of the concept of The Force controlling people's destiny. That and his thing about how people's beliefs inform their actions, and how strength comes through conviction to those beliefs. If Disney would hire people like Avellone that at least respect what Star Wars was, then we'd be getting much better material. There's so much potential in exploring the Force as a power that enhances the ramification of people's choices and amplifies how their actions affect others.
Kotor 2 was written by Chris Avellone who definitely isn't a Star Wars fan but he is an incredible writer and has done a lot of research in the EU for writing Kotor 2.
Great video! I never got into Star Wars video games outside of the first SNES one, but I've heard about plenty of gems in the series that I might play one day!
I can't recommend the first in the current state, but KOTOR2 is still one of my favorites and it's fixed by mostly one mod on steam workshop. If you want something a bit more arcadey the OG Battlefront 2 is pretty good and for more narrative games try Unleashed and Commandos; they're all fun in their own way.
