      Too bad movie is NOT true story of Frank Lucas's life. Hollywood just took parts of other drug kingpins lives, like Bumpy Johnson, Nicky Barnes, Chambers Brothers, Midget Molly, etc...and combined all their stories into Frank's story. Originally, movie and book were supposed to be about Nicky Barnes, but Barnes's family and Hollywood couldn't come to agreement with money and contracts. So, instead they took Nicky's drug dealing accomplishments and put them into Frank's story. Examples....In reality, Frank never really traveled to Vietnam or anywhere outside U.S to find drug suppliers. Also, he wasn't really that big of a drug dealer and wasn't powerful like movie made it seem.

      @@TOKRocK84 I think Depp looked the part wonderfully, as far as playing Whitey, he could have done better. To me it was a recycled Boston George, but this time he was a rat sociopath. The blame isn't Depp's fault, in all honesty I don't think any other actor could have pulled of the performance that he did. W/ that being said, Im not saying that his performance was great, or something to be amazed by, I'm simply saying that because the Studio wanted to bang out the film as fast as possible, because of the capture of Whitey, they rushed the project and it showed, at least to me it did. Again Depp did a Good job, not a C.H. more, & that's better than anyone else I can think of, since they all butcher the dog shit out of the accent. Bottom line my friend, is if they had a director that had the interest, the money, the script, Johnny Depp again, but most importantly, The Time, then this film, could have, been a fuckn classic. Maybe I'm a cynical bastard because I'm born in the Bean & live in the Bean, so I expect more from Boston, plus the story wrote itself & that makes it hard to fuck up, but they only half fucked it up. Take care pal.

As someone that's grown up around gangsters his looks seem realistic and when the atmosphere of the scene starts to change to suspenseful on a dime it's really powerful. It very well could. Gangster has many meanings. It could mean 1 or more. We tend to roll toward gangster groups because of the "family meaning". It comes down to who wants to be labeled in such a way.

      Mr_mvp23 alpo was a bitch and snitch azie was a true G he stated if you already doing a crime that can put you away for life why draw attention doing petty crimes to draw the heat to you , real life mobsters had the same mentality once drugs and r.i.c.o laws came out

  • @verisimilitudeteller
    @verisimilitudeteller 9 лет назад +5

    Frank Rosenthal was never a true gangster, he just had to run in gangster circles to be the professional gambler he was at the time and place he was doing it. In Casino it would have been better to say Joe Pesci as Anthony Spilotro was the true "gangster."

    • @chrisgadarowski9946
      @chrisgadarowski9946 8 лет назад

      He was an "earner" who made a lot of money for the Outfit (Chicago mob).

    • @verisimilitudeteller
      @verisimilitudeteller 8 лет назад

      +Chris Gadarowski No question about that. I'm just saying Rosenthal knew gambling, not leg breaking/extortion etc... I live in Las Vegas, gambling is legit, and it should be. When you make something illegal that a lot of people want.. Prohibition for example, the gangs/mafia etc will fill the gap. If gambling had been legal in Chicago, Rosenthal wouldn't have been mobbed up at all.
      Now look at it as it applies to today... the drug war and prostitution for example, it leaves a gap which is filled by the seedy side, gambling was considered as seedy as prostitution is looked on today, but it can be legalized it can be regulated and it can be legit. We just don't have the political will to do the right thing. Legalize drugs, what's the down side?

    Joe Pesci definetly deserves a spot on the top 10 list. His character "Nicky Santoro" is based on Tony Spilotro who earned his stripes in Chicago. He went by the nickname "The Ant" because of his 5-foot-2-inch stature. Joe Pesci also portrayed "Tommy DeVito" in "Goodfellas", a character based on Thomas DeSimone a real life gangster that worked for the Lucchese Crime Family before disappearing in 1979. If these ganagsters were anything like what Joe Pesci portrayed them to be then he should be No.1 on the list. Even if they were nothing like his characters he deserves the top spot because he sure as hell convinced me.

    Three actors TOTALLY transform and you don't see any of their personal characteristics in their performances.
    A) Daniel Day Lewis
    B) Tom Hardy
    C) Joaquin Phoenix.
    You ONLY SEE THE CHARACTER. Not their personal "charm" Charisma , facial ticks, expressions etc... just THE CHARACTER.
    Sorry but Deniro, Denzel, Even Pacino have over the years seem to be playing the same guy just with different variations. Every once in awhile they do a truly standout performance. But the 3 actors I mentioned in the beginning are ALWAYS consistent and totally immerse themselves in their roles to the point you don't know its them.
    THAT is the mark of the truly ACTORS Actor, the top tier.
