    Miss you Shadow. I know life probably just happened, and you just don't have time/interest anymore to make videos anymore seeing that it has been more than a year now since your last upload. You can tell there's still people looking forward for you to come back someday including me in the comments. Been watching you for over a decade man, your anime reviews/ticket to damnation videos back then are still hilarious to this day when I rewatch it from time to time. I'm not sure if you will ever read this, but hope you decide to come back eventually - a lot of people miss ya. But if you decide to move on, I also respect that since I also experience the same things in life - thanks for being one of my favorite old school anime reviewers

    About Thorfinn his character was created in 2005 (Manga) before Attack On Titan (2009) So straight comparen him to Eren is just a litte bit dumb imo. Also if we do the comparison then, the trope edgy teenager was already big establishment with Joe Yabuki (Ashita No Joe: 1969) and Guts (Berserk: 1989). So yeah Attack on Titan absolutly didnt start a trend, your just a younger anime watcher.
    Also you werent supposed to like Thorfinn, Thorfinn choose the wrong path of doing things and was punished in the end. This was all by writers intent.
    How Askeladd was constant lecturing and giving advice to Thorfinn to just give up or forget to the whole honer stuff. Wanting revenge at somebody never solves the problem, especially violence. Thats the lesson Thorfinn needed to learn and he failed in this first season. Thats to me just great character writing and takes balls to make your semi protaganist unlikeable from the get go.
    This is not to critizize your opinion, just giving you another perspective. Season 2 will be fantastic if you like character development.

    Before he left for good, I honestly expected him to review Gleipnir or Rokka for his next review.
    I kinda watched Shadowacs video periodically (I used to be a very regular watcher of Tickets to Damnation).
    I'm surprised that he did disappear as he is one of the last Anime Review RUclipsrs that actually reviews the anime instead of Podcasts or overly long retrospectives.
    It's a slowly dying niche that needs to return.

    5:46 Not really fair to hold that against this show because the Vinland Saga manga started in 2005, well before Attack on Titan took the anime world by storm (hell, the Attack on Titan manga didn't even start till 2009).
    No, I don't know what took them so long to adapt this.

    I promise thorfinn gets way better as a protagonist and that's what season 2 will deliver on. Season 1 is literally just a prologue to the rest of the story. Season 2 is going to hit very different though and anime onlys unfortunately may be turned off by it but it's downright beautiful watching thorfinn later become the man he is meant to be.

    • @TheSpawnfan
      @TheSpawnfan 2 года назад +3

      He was Young, angry and revenge driven and by the end of the season suffered the consequences for It, he is not a good person on season 1, but he is not a bad protagonist.

    • @thethingthatshouldnotbe7221
      @thethingthatshouldnotbe7221 Год назад +1

      The problem is, Thorfinn is already a great protagonist. During the prologue, he isn't just driven by revenge. He develops a complex relationship with Askeladd, which goes further than just "I hate him". Ironically, Askeladd becomes Thorfinn's surrogate father, which is what leads to the happenings in Season 2.

    Glad to see you still making videos, cause honestly you're probably still my favorite anime reviewer. Sometimes simplicity can be the most effective approach to commentary, and it's definitely always effective here. Most of my recommendations came from here, and 9/10 times I was not let down (even the ones that may have been bad but I purposely watched to see how bad they were... lol).

    I’ve mentioned the series in comments on your previous video’s before, but I really do think you’ll enjoy the case study of Vanitas ( anime and manga) it’s got great action, multilayered characters who frankly are a psychologists wet dream, the comedy is gold( maybe one or two weak jokes but otherwise it’s pretty great) but the one thing I know will hook you? The romance: the one thing you and I have in common is that a good romance is our weakness in anime, and this show delivers in SPADES. The main ‘couple’ is a less toxic version of Buffy and Spike that evolves into something very sweet and the b romance is compelling as well.( plus there is A LOT of homoerotic subtext between the two protagonists and their love interests, so there’s something for everyone. And they are all French so there’s a strong chance they might actually go this route with one or all of them.) And dare I say, this show has found a way to be erotic without being lewd. I won’t go into details but DAMN is it hot! And no pantie shots, no groping, no boobs getting thrust in your face or clothes ripping easier than ceran wrap. It’s both classy and sensual. It might even be classified as the personification of Romanticism really since it’s so intent on making you feel. But not to blow smoke, the anime did cut some stuff out. Most of the stuff cut wasn’t integral to the plot but two or three things were that really needed to be kept. And while the soundtrack is PHENOMENAL, the show sometimes put songs in a scene that doesn’t really match the tone, at least in my opinion. But for the most part I found it to be an extremely fulfilling ride, with the action, pacing and comedy of Full metal alchemist, the emotional depth of violet ever garden, and a romance that’s as fulfilling as… well I don’t have a good comparison there, but I’m trying ok???Even if you never review it I think your gonna like it. Plus, I bet you will be a total Simp for Jeanne or Dominique.( maybe Chloe but I doubt it.)

    Honestly, given how the sagas tend to heavily embellish stories by adding mythical elements like dragons or trolls, the manga and show probably represent the history better than the original texts, ironically. Also, Thorfinn, Askeladd and Canute are (for obvious reasons) three of my favourite characters in fiction and the historical Canute the Great is genuinely worth reading up on.

    In defense of Thorfin while his quest to avenge his father is somewhat similar to Eren as you mentioned from what little I've heard from with the events of the manga after this season he gets MUCH better which in hindsight I think is great and ironically it was the same with Eren for me he's great in the current seasons. Also I'm guessing you watched the Netflix dub(I'm guessing due to how you pronounced askeladd not hate though) Shadow which while I don't dislike it I personally thought Sentai's dub fit the show better but that's just me.

    I think you're a little harsh on Thorfinn the reason we know revenge is wrong is because we weren't raised by vikings. Having Askelad as a mentor doesn't help, he definitely would devote his life to revenge, in fact he has. The big difference with Thorfinn is that Askelad is actually good at it.

    Both Thorfinn and Eren has legit reasons for being the way they are. It's only natural for them to be angry at what has happened to them. Don't see how this is legit criticism, unless it was handled badly. Which i personally don't think it is in either case. Also AoT and Vinland Saga handles these themes entirely differently.
    The comparison to Code Geass, i find pretty misplaced. There's not a lot of logic behind the politics or the actions in Code Geass. Using that show as a refference to well written politics, is kinda like using Fairy Tail as a well written shounen.
    Other than that, pretty good review! Just gonna say that this is only the first season. Thorfinn is written this way by intention. The author wouldn't have a character like Askeladd or Canute and then never develop his protagonist. One of the main themes is to show how pointless revenge can be, which is what Thorfinn is supposed to represent.
