  • I gave the new Phish album a 2nd listen. Monsters, Human Nature, and Oblivion are my favorite songs. I don't think we needed additional studio versions of Lonely Trip, Evolve and, Wave of Hope. Valdese nuts is fun to say. Tom Marshall is the man.

    Yeah, agreement on the recycling. Thankfully, the studio albums are (mostly) just the ingredients for the live versions. If, say 2 or 3 songs (per album) become reliable fantastic jam vehicles, that works for me. Along with those, of course, come some yawners…the price we pay, I guess. Thanks for your ongoing Zappa-ness, man! 👊🏼

    The new album has been growing on me. I think there are some great songs there: Valdese, Ether Edge, Oblivion. I think overall it's pretty solid. They are never going back to old school Phish on their albums.

    I understand the take here. Though, I think if we take a step back and try to be unbiased, objective as we can be, I believe this is a decent collection of music. Even compared with their "peers" if they even have any at this point, or even the other decent groups currently putting out music, I think this holds up. The arrangements are compelling, the sound quality is great, and the tunes are all fairly unique.
    This has been happening after every album since Farmhouse, when we all say "this new Phish is so meh" and then ten years down the line the tunes are well established mainstays.
    They can't all be gems like 90s Phish, but damn are we lucky to even get one or two an album that will settle in for the long haul. It ain't like Dead and Co. are dropping new shit, ya know? Like this is a legacy band that continues to drop new shit... a band that could have been finished 20 years ago. Dare I ask, have we become spoiled my P-Fish brethren?
    But alas, I do understand your points Kev and always love appreciate your straight shooting. I also applaud your use of Valdese Nutz. Boom.

    The band appears to be healthy and happy, making music they appear to like, and selling out shows. For me, that's the most important point. As for this album, and "new Phish" generally, it's not for me. I'm reminded of something Trey said in "Specimen's of Beauty", paraphrasing - what happens when a band gets famous off of making squares but then wants to make circles? It's meant to bring up the tension between audience expectations and a band trying to maintain creative energy over the long haul. As a Gen X'r, who grew up on 90's Phish, I get why Trey (who is much older than me) just won't be writing "Fluffheads" anymore, and I'm cool with that. But, I also believe that at best, humans do not have the capacity to master "all the things". So maybe you don't want to make "squares" anymore and you now want to make "circles". But you also cut your chops making squares and you may not be as good at circles. So Trey wants to make circles, and I get it, but that doesn't mean its as good and I, personally, do not think it is, for the most part. Mainly, I don't think it (ballads, simple folk tunes, "Dad/Yacht Rock", vocal-forward songs, etc.) plays to the band's strengths. I also don't think that drawing "squares" necessarily means "same". I'm thinking of chess...chess has many different styles and permutations, but it's still chess, broadly speaking. The band could, it seems to me, go back to its roots/strengths, while still moving in different directions. But, for whatever reason, that's not the direction the band is taking. Again, it is what it is. I'm happy for the band and those still in the scene, but, just not for me.

    Alright I nearly always agree with you, and while I do agree with you here in principle, I do need to correct you. Sigma Oasis and Big Boat, Phish’s last two studio albums did not have “recycled material” as this album has. They had a lot of songs that had been played live for a while, but none on any studio albums. See The Rolling Stones article were Trey clearly acknowledges this and states the goal of albums now is to have an album of songs that have been perfected live, so it is to be expected these have been heard for a while. So this one is expected to have “recycled material” in that regard, as have the last 2 albums. Here is where I agree: half of this album, unlike any previous Phish album, has already been recorded in a studio. Maybe they wanted to give them the “Phish treatment” to perfect them, but that I feel is annoying. Also, nearly all of these with the exception of Mike’s Human Nature, were debuted by Trey, which make it feel very Trey-centric and go to another thing he said in reference to the Dead but implication could be that it’s how he feels about Phish: the Dead is Jerry’s band, Phish is his band, these are the most songs road tested by Trey prior to Phish. So I agree, but also you have it a little misconstrued on older albums.

    • @FZappa20
      @FZappa20  Месяц назад

      I understand what you're saying about Sigma. Making an exact comparison is inaccurate, but Sigma still felt recycled. Several of those songs debuted in 2015 and Steam was almost a decade old.

      You really think Trey considers the band "Trey's band". I just think the dude is really driven and have more output than the other members. I don't think he's trying to control what gets out there. I think what Trey said about GD being "Jerry's band"..wait....now you have me thinking? Does Trey think Phish is "Treys' band"?...Anyway, it was kinda of a crazy statement and seemed dismissive of other members of GD even though he didn't mean it that way. Also, did Jerry go out of this way to say he wasn't the leader or didn't want to be the leader of the band? Meanwhile in other news, who has been divorced twice?

    iI's difficult to make sense of what Trey's is trying to convey when he is not playing live music. Think back to the Sphere shows -- the music was outstanding but Trey's concept of themes for the shows was felt like nonsense. The same is true of GAMEHENGE, great music, but obtuse theme. I say 'what-ever' to the themes and WOW to the OUTSTANDING music.
