    Have you done a multi-day kayak trip? Where was your first expedition?

    6.2 miles is a pretty good paddle especially if heading into the wind but looks like you had some calm waters. The reward would be the great camping on those pebble beaches and paddling around the islands. Looks like fun!!! 🤓

      Thanks for watching! We got some nice weather for the open water crossings.
      Paddling to the islands was such a reward; the Slate Islands are unique and beautiful!

    Very nice video. My wife and I are headed there in two weeks. (Taking a boat from Marathon instead of doing the cross though.) Praying for good weather. Our favorite Lake Superior destination has been the Pukaskwa coast, from the Michipicoten River to Hattie Cove. Over 10 days, we only say 3-4 other people.

      I'm super excited for you! Are you going with a group? How long is the boat charter from Marathon?
      Beautiful! I LOVE Pukaskwa and would like to do a sea kayak expedition along that part of Lake Superior. Especially camping near Cascade Falls!
      Fingers crossed for you on your upcoming Slate Islands trip 🙌🏼

      @@PaddleAdventurer : Our trip is with Naturally Superior Outfitters, based just south of Wawa, with whom we’ve travelled with twice before. Great guides and fabulous food. Not sure of the boat trip length from Marathon to the Slates unfortunately. In Pukaskwa, we camped right at Cascade Falls, which indeed is simply awesome!

      The one thing you do not mention is the water temperature. I was at the apostle islands and the water temp in lake superior never gets above 55 degrees F. Please keep this in mind when doing anything in or on this lake.

    • @PaddleAdventurer
      @PaddleAdventurer  5 месяцев назад

      @@charlesroll424 Absolutely! You should always dress for the water temperatures and Lake Superior can be cold all year long. The average surface temp is in and around 60F in August. apps.glerl.noaa.gov/coastwatch/webdata/statistic/pdf/all_year_glsea_avg_s.pdf

    I always prepack for a trip and then I unpack into my front and rear duffle bags. That makes packing the kayak at the dock a lot quicker.

    • @PaddleAdventurer
      @PaddleAdventurer  5 месяцев назад

      Great tip! A few folks on this trip used large IKEA type bags to carry their pre-packed items to the kayaks.
      Where I struggled was not knowing how to best pack for the sea kayak as I'm used to packing for paddle boards and canoes.

    • @SwanQtrTom
      @SwanQtrTom 5 месяцев назад +1

      I’ve noticed IKEA bags have become popular for getting those loose items to the campsite. I might need to upgrade from my Home Depot bag. Happy padding.

    • @PaddleAdventurer
      @PaddleAdventurer  5 месяцев назад

      @@SwanQtrTom They are pretty useful! Hold up to lots of wear and tear, don't soak up water, can hold a lot of gear and pack down well.
      Sounds like you have a pretty solid system though!
      Happy paddling to you too!

    How did the Slate Islands get their name?

    • @PaddleAdventurer
      @PaddleAdventurer  8 месяцев назад

      Great question! I'm not sure. youtube.com/@zkruz do you know?

    • @zkruz
      @zkruz 7 месяцев назад +1

      I am not 100% clear on how they became named the slate islands as they are not really made of slate. There are another Slate Islands off the coast of Scotland which are actually composed of Slate but these Slate Islands off of Terrace Bay Ontario are composed of Archean supracrustal and igneous rocks and Proterozoic metavolcanics, metasediments, and diabase. Super complicated geologic formations. There might actually be slate in the mix somewhere, and perhaps when they were explorered by westerners they just named the islands that.. I will dig deeper and see if I can elaborate more.
