- Join me on my first-ever sea kayaking multi-day trip as I paddle with SAND Adventures on Lake Superior to the Slate Islands, an island group created a billion years ago by a meteorite impact.
Thank you to Zack for this incredible trip, the entire group for letting me film, and the amazing experience together! ❤️🤙🏼

Have you done a multi-day kayak trip? Where was your first expedition?
6.2 miles is a pretty good paddle especially if heading into the wind but looks like you had some calm waters. The reward would be the great camping on those pebble beaches and paddling around the islands. Looks like fun!!! 🤓
Thanks for watching! We got some nice weather for the open water crossings.
Paddling to the islands was such a reward; the Slate Islands are unique and beautiful!
Loved your energy and enthusiasm.
Am researching and planning several kayak trips this look promising.
Happy paddling!!!🙏
Thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
What area and kayak trips and you looking to do?
I'm heading out to do another one this summer around Rossport on Lake Superior again.
Just awesome vlog
I’m Zack’s Dad
Great job paddling to the Slates on your first trip!
Thanks for doing a great job on SAND social marketing
Hey Al! Thanks for checking out and watching some of my videos. I really appreciate the kind words.
This was an amazing trip and it's always a pleasure adventuring with Zack!
Good luck in your further adventures
Antarctica?
Thank you! I’d love to go back. I heard you had an amazing trip.
I just got back from Japan and am hoping to head up towards Rossport and Tbay for another sea kayaking SAND adventure 🙌🏼
Japan wow!
Never been
Very clean I hear
What an adventure!! Thank you for bringing us along. Please keep making more great paddling videos!! 😊
Thank you for watching and commenting! The Slate Islands is a magical spot and I’m thrilled to be able to share it with you 🦅🦦🌲🪨
Wild adventure with all the weather and learning new skills. Awesome!
Thanks for watching! I learned a ton on this trip and what a beautiful setting to do it in! 😍
You enjoyed kayaking in beautiful nature. I think camping in great places is the charm of kayaking. Great!!
Thanks for watching! Lake Superior and the Slate Islands are pretty spectacular. It was an amazing time! 🏕️🌌🥰
Such a ruggedly beautiful area! What a great trip. Lake Superior can be so intimidating to be out on the water. Looks like you had amazing guides!
Thanks for always watching! Northern Ontario especially on Lake Superior is magical and visiting the Slates was extra special.
After watching this, it’s really surprising it doesn’t have more views! I bet you for sure will do another one of these.
Thanks for watching and for the kind comment! I had a wonderful time and I can't wait to do another kayak expedition. In the mean time, I'm planning my next backcountry paddle boarding trip for this summer!
Loved the enthusiasm. Excellent inspiring video. I hope I find a woman that will do this with me before I’m to old to enjoy it all. 63 and hoping ! Lol
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. It was a beautiful trip and I'd highly recommend doing any kind of paddling on Lake Superior if you ever get the chance! Maybe you'll find a partner to do it with too!
Very nice video. My wife and I are headed there in two weeks. (Taking a boat from Marathon instead of doing the cross though.) Praying for good weather. Our favorite Lake Superior destination has been the Pukaskwa coast, from the Michipicoten River to Hattie Cove. Over 10 days, we only say 3-4 other people.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I'm super excited for you! Are you going with a group? How long is the boat charter from Marathon?
Beautiful! I LOVE Pukaskwa and would like to do a sea kayak expedition along that part of Lake Superior. Especially camping near Cascade Falls!
Fingers crossed for you on your upcoming Slate Islands trip 🙌🏼
@@PaddleAdventurer : Our trip is with Naturally Superior Outfitters, based just south of Wawa, with whom we’ve travelled with twice before. Great guides and fabulous food. Not sure of the boat trip length from Marathon to the Slates unfortunately. In Pukaskwa, we camped right at Cascade Falls, which indeed is simply awesome!
Sounds like a great group! You'll have to return and let me know how the trip goes. Have a wonderful time!
I love your videos so much! My goal when I paddle is to "see stuff" ( birds, turtles, whatever), and everything else is a bonus for me. 😁Happy New Year, I can't wait to see where your adventures take you in the coming year! 🎉🏕🏞🌠
Thanks for the kind words; I'm so glad you enjoy my videos!
I also love checking out all the little things. Slates was amazing for exploring and paddling between rocks.
🎉 Happy New Year to you too! Still loads of advenchas to edit from 2023 and more to come this year 🙌🏼
The one thing you do not mention is the water temperature. I was at the apostle islands and the water temp in lake superior never gets above 55 degrees F. Please keep this in mind when doing anything in or on this lake.
@@charlesroll424 Absolutely! You should always dress for the water temperatures and Lake Superior can be cold all year long. The average surface temp is in and around 60F in August. apps.glerl.noaa.gov/coastwatch/webdata/statistic/pdf/all_year_glsea_avg_s.pdf
This is a great site to check out Great Lake's water temperatures: www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/
Also, the Apostle Islands, look amazing!
Love the adventure and the underwater shots...beautiful water!
Thanks! The clarity of the water was unbelievable and pretty chilly!
WOW
Thanks for watching! It was a beautiful trip and experience!
Super sick video I’m jealous
Thanks for watching and for your kind words! The Slate Islands are amazing and I feel so lucky to have experienced them!
I always prepack for a trip and then I unpack into my front and rear duffle bags. That makes packing the kayak at the dock a lot quicker.
Great tip! A few folks on this trip used large IKEA type bags to carry their pre-packed items to the kayaks.
Where I struggled was not knowing how to best pack for the sea kayak as I'm used to packing for paddle boards and canoes.
I’ve noticed IKEA bags have become popular for getting those loose items to the campsite. I might need to upgrade from my Home Depot bag. Happy padding.
@@SwanQtrTom They are pretty useful! Hold up to lots of wear and tear, don't soak up water, can hold a lot of gear and pack down well.
Sounds like you have a pretty solid system though!
Happy paddling to you too!
How did the Slate Islands get their name?
Great question! I'm not sure. youtube.com/@zkruz do you know?
I am not 100% clear on how they became named the slate islands as they are not really made of slate. There are another Slate Islands off the coast of Scotland which are actually composed of Slate but these Slate Islands off of Terrace Bay Ontario are composed of Archean supracrustal and igneous rocks and Proterozoic metavolcanics, metasediments, and diabase. Super complicated geologic formations. There might actually be slate in the mix somewhere, and perhaps when they were explorered by westerners they just named the islands that.. I will dig deeper and see if I can elaborate more.
@@zkruz Thanks so much Zach. Interesting theories!
