There is a fight that appears to be the one that is noted as changing the sport forever, 1982, for changing the boxing rules on how many rounds were sanctioned by different boxing commissions. Kim Duk-Koo from South Korea vs Ray Mancini from America.
At the beginning of the 14th, Mancini connected with a straight right that snapped Kim’s head back and sent him crashing to the canvas. The Korean managed to haul himself up by the ropes to beat the count, but referee Richard Green stepped in to stop the fight.
Kim coach and manager had been tending to his corner and missed the actual knockout blow, but when he saw Kim on the ground, he knew at once that the fight was over.
“He was obviously hurt, but at that time we had no idea it was so serious,” he said.
Back in his corner, Kim collapsed and was taken from the ring on a stretcher to hospital where he was diagnosed with a blood clot on the brain and underwent emergency surgery. He lapsed into a coma from which he never recovered and four days later he died.
On the flight back to South Korea, a now traumatized manager locked himself in the toilet and “cried and cried until we landed.
He thought about quitting the sport entirely. In the end, he decided to stick with it, but it was a very, very difficult time, he said at his gym where photos and posters of Kim Duk-Koo adorn the walls.
The consequences of the Kim-Mancini bout were far-reaching and tragic in their own right. Four months after her son’s death, Kim’s distraught mother killed herself by drinking a bottle of pesticide. Four months after that, referee Richard Green also took his own life, although there was no indication that his suicide was linked to the outcome of the fight for which he was never held in any way responsible. Mancini, a devout Catholic, endured a prolonged period of depression and, although he fought again, was never the same boxer.

If you watch closely during Rocky's fight with Thunderlips, he was having problems breathing because he was getting overworked with all of his yelling into the ring. To answer your question, yes. Boxers have died from injuries sustained in boxing matches. It's a major reason why most modern boxing matches last a maximum of 10 or 12 rounds instead of 15. They shortened the length of professional matches after a boxer died in the 80's and caused increased scrutiny in the sport's safety. Boxers also now wear bigger gloves than they used to for the extra protection.
Also yes, the Russian translator was translating Rocky incorrectly. When Rocky says "Here you got two guys killing each other, but I guess that's better than 20 million." But the translator says "...that's better than 20 million dollars." He totally missed the point of Rocky's speech. 😂

I realize that this was a long time ago, but in regard to your concern about Drago saying "if he dies, he dies" a boxer's hands are registered as lethal weapons. It is part of what every professional boxer must do to get a license. Every fighter knows that he could die or kill someone in the ring. They also know that they have to be careful in public because if they fight someone, they could easily kill them and that would be murder. In the ring though, when boxers die it is not taken lightly. In those rare cases, changes are made to the rules to try to prevent it from happening again, but it is always possible. Professional boxers are signing away any rights they have if that happens.

Having said that, continue on if you'd like..IMO when you love a story like it seems liek you do, its worth continuing on regardless. Glad you loved it so much..thanks for sharing!

Rocky vs communism and Rocky whooped its fucking ass. This movie is so 80s and i love every second of it. Stallone going absolute beast mode in the final training montage gets me so hyped, those 180 degree vertical situps and the core strength pose are just so dope.
You said it looked so good like they were hitting each other for real - in some shots they absolutely were. Dolph Lundgren accidentally sent Stallone to the hospital after hitting him in the chest so hard that Stallone's heart swelled and he had to remain in intensive care for four days.

"it looks like he's getting beat up in real life."
He was. Stallone wanted the fight to look ultra-real, so in the beginning section, Lundgren is actually hitting him. They had to stop that because Lundgren accidentally hit him SO hard in the chest that it sent Stallone to intensive care for 8 days. He almost died.

Rocky 4 is my favorite. As for Apollo's death, he kinda brought that to himself. Apart from Drago, it was his ego that also killed him. And Rocky decided to fight Drago out of vengeance.

Its not that common but you gotta think all those hard blows to head and chest can take its toll. As a matter of fact when they were filming the fight scene between Rocky and Drago. Stallone told Lungren tp hit him as hard as he could because he wanted to look real. But it sent Stallone to hospital because it did something to the sack around his heart. So Stallone almost died making this movie in real life.

There is a principle called assumption of risk that governs the repercussions from a fight like boxing or older grappling styles that featured real joint locks and throws. So long as you followed the rules, if the opponent dies as a result of the fight, its the opponent's own fault, he assumed the risk of climbing into the ring. Not to say the winner necessarily went free, as the crowd enrsged by the death of a hometown favorite often is not impressed by legal niceties.
Yes, there are dozens of recorded deaths of boxers both male and female, and its not ancient history, some are pretty recent.

I haven't seen the director's cut, but I've seen a few reactors, and I watched the documentary about it, Stallone sit down in 2020 when everything was shut down, and with all the years he has experienced since originally filming this, he made it more in depth. He took away some form and added more substance, he said he trusted the audience alot more this time around. I'm glad you decided to see 5. If you love Rockys character development and his whole story, I like 5 better than 4 for sure, but I get the reason alot of people don't like it, but to say skip it, is missing the mark. Also, I think it's crucial to see 5 before you see Rocky Balboa (6) which to me is even with 1 & 2. My fav list goes 1,6,2, 5, 3, 4. not all of t. Looking forward to see how you feel after 5.

Not sure if anyone told this, but Sylvester Stallone almost died during the filming of the movie. Stallone told Dolph Lundgre/Drago to actually punch him in the chest. The punch stopped Stallone's heart, and the next thing he remembered was waking up in a helicopter on the way to the hospital. Dolph Lundgren was a European Karate Champion
