Why is Christopher Reeves so iconic as Superman?
This is because he perfectly captures the character, both as Superman and as Clark Kent.
Every other actor after him is either a stronger Superman or a stronger Clark Kent but he perfectly nailed both.
If you read the comics from the golden ages (40's and 50's), you'll totally see them in Reeves excellent interpretation.

There was also a Steve Reeves who played Hercules in 50's B movies and my mom would always get mixed up and say Steve Reeve when she meant Christopher Reeve.

That's not entirely true. The first movie to use CGI was in 1973, and it was called Westworld. Even though it was only used for 2 minutes, it opened up a whole new method of special effects. It was still early, and Superman was released only 5 years after, so CGI wasn't exactly a practical choice for effects by then.

Man of Steel assumes you already know a good amount of Clarks origin so it skips alot of what you see in this film. It doesn't destroy you're viewing of Man of Steel but you will leave with alot of questions that are answered by watching Superman (1978) and it's sequel. I guess Man of Steel is similar Batman 1989 a film that assumes you already know the origins of Batman as in 1989 Batman's origin was pretty common knowledge. While Batman Begins is more friendly for people unaware of Batman as a character.

Arguably dated and possibly slow moving for younger audiences, but only because of the over-saturation of superhero movies recently. The 78 Superman movie was THE blueprint for all modern superhero movies, as it was the first to take the subject matter seriously. Some prefer the sequel, but for me this is the best. The whole origin story and Clarke's relationship with his parents really gives the movie heart, and makes the second act of the movie all the more satisfying. Christopher Reeves is the perfect Superman, Gene Hackman was a brilliant Lex Luthor, and the John Williams' score is easily one of his finest.

I live with a mental condition that makes movies with slower pacing very difficult to enjoy. If I'm not kept constantly engaged by a movie, my brain starts doing its own thing and thereafter I can barely pay attention anymore. It's why there are a bunch of movies people call "classic" or "masterpieces" that I find insufferably irritating to try to watch. I have heard other people say those movies are slow or dull. Long before superhero movies today, we had this. I saw it 3 times in the cinema, its still magic. Casting Reeve was done because they wanted an unknown actor to be in the role, other big stars of the 70's, including Clint Eastwood, were considered but that would have meant audiences would identify with the star rather than his character. Reeve was just perfect, so was Kidder. RIP both of them, shame they've gone but with this movie, they're immortal.
BTW, 6.42 the couple on the train were Superman & Lois back in I think, the 50's.

You can't judge a 1978 movie without the time context. There were no "super hero movies" in that time.
Comic books were considered "just for kids". They have to convince the studio to invest without knowing it would return any profit.
They only invest because of Marlon Brandon name. Even after the big Super Man's success, another super heroe movie was made only after a decade... the first Batman.

    • @BubblyRainbows
      @BubblyRainbows Год назад

Your comments about movies and comic books at the time, I'm sure, are accurate, so I'm not trying to argue against your views on the climate of the times. But I've heard several people from my dad's generation use this argument of "It's not fair to compare movies from the [70's/80's/whatever] to modern movies" I understand why they make that argument and that for people who grew up with these movies, they're beloved classics. But it's also not a fair argument.
Again, I concede all your points. I'm just pointing out a fact that a lot of people who make this argument don't seem to consider. Preferences are subjective based on the person's thoughts and experiences. This is a beloved classic that you grew up with. It was important in your life for whatever reason. But to someone like me, who was born about 25 years after this movie was made, it is very dull, cheesy-looking, and outdated. At the time, I'm sure it was groundbreaking. But I have no emotional or nostalgic connection to it. Telling me I can't judge this movie against the movies I grew up with doesn't make sense. Because like Superman for you, the movies I grew up with are the beloved classics of MY life. Naturally, what I grew up with will have an effect on my tastes and opinions. And those tastes and opinions are going to be applied to the things I watch.
I will stress as many times as I need to that I'm not trying to argue that your opinions on the matter are invalid. They are perfectly valid and understandable. I just get frustrated that so many people have their own opinion on what is good and why, and then based on that opinion, view everyone who disagrees with them as wrong. Or worse, views them more harshly than that (such as Tic Toc Melody, above, who apparently views fans of modern movies as childish embarrassments, to paraphrase.) I mean, everyone feels the way they feel, but for my entire life, I've seen way too much of this "my opinion is right and everyone else is a complete moron who should be degraded and punished for daring to disagree" nonsense. You like the '78 Superman movie. I get that and I'm not going to hate you and insult you for it as a disturbingly large number of people might. But I do NOT like this movie (to clarify, I don't HATE it, I just don't find it particularly memorable or engaging) and it would be nice if people could refrain from hating and insulting me in return. You know?
TL;DR: I'm fairly certain that you judge many movies against the movies you grew up with and develop an opinion accordingly. Expecting me not to similarly judge what I watch against the movies I grew up with is an unfair double standard. But just because we disagree on whether or not this movie is good doesn't mean the other person is wrong or deserves to be insulted or looked down upon. It just means we judge the movie differently. And that's okay.

The compelling thing about the character is that he's a man with the power of a God. And he CHOOSES to live not only as a "mere mortal", but to be as decent a person as possible. He represents us. We'll never have the powers, but we can have the morality. Kal-El could be an Overlord, having others serve him. Instead, he CHOOSES to be a Champion, to do for others. I can go kick someone's door in and try to hurt them, to take from them. Or I can go knock on someone's door and offer to help them in whatever way I can. Human behavior, all of it, is based on choice. We can choose to be good or bad. Superman is a fictional character that represents the best of our very real potential. It's really...

Clark Kent is a 1930's midwestern farm kid. Farm people help their neighbors. It's essential to success in farming. When the harvest has to come in, farmers cooperate with their neighbors to get the job done. So you get together with the neighbors and organize a train of grain wagons running between the combine and the grain silos so the combine never has to stop moving. You need one guy to run the combine and a whole bunch of guys to run the wagons. It requires a lot more than one farmer and his family can handle. It doesn't matter if you're neighbors are good friends or not. They need the help. Just like you do. So you help.
When a storm/tornado destroys one farmer's barn, everyone in the neighborhood would get together to build a new barn. Because he needs one. And, when the time comes, everyone knows that the neighbors will help them when they need a new barn/silo/etc. (And it's an excuse to get together, socialize with the neighbors, gossip, etc.)
When the Post Office began rural free delivery farmers would sometimes leave a note for the mailman asking him to milk the cows, feed the chickens, etc. because the family had gone off to visit relatives for a day or two. And the mailman would do it. Because they were neighbors and knew each other. Because the farmer needed the help. Because it is what farm people do (even though it's annoying to have one of your deliveries offload a bunch of farmwork on you without asking beforehand).
City kids aren't like this. City kids might stick up for immediate friends and family, but they aren't typically going to just help out a neighbor they barely know just because. But city people also tend to be more mercenary, more self-centered, more unscrupulous in their dealings with other people. It's why so many stories feature a farm kid called to adventure - like Luke Skywalker. City kids tend to turn out more like Batman - motivated by very specific personal drives rather than a generalized non-specific impulse to help others.

There were 50 years of Comics of Superman before this movie, and after this movie, Superman looked more like Christopher Reeve because he WAS SUPERMAN. Christopher Reeve is what Superman is SUPPOSED to look like.
The whole world cried the day Christopher Reeve broke his neck in that horseriding accident... Superman was hurt, and may not survive. He did survive, but, was in a wheelchair on a respirator for the rest of his life. And he was ALWAYS Superman.

There was a cafeteria that everyone on set used, and for weeks he ate there, dressed as Clark Kent, unassuming, quiet, meek, shoulders slouched. No one even noticed him. Then, they began doing the Superman scenes, and he switched personas. When he'd walk into the cafeteria, shoulders back, looking people in the eyes, confident. He was commanding. And every everyone would stare at him when he walked in, especially the women. He was an incredible actor.

You are watching this movie with the wrong glasses. This movie is not about a fictional universe of superheroes dealing with fictional extraterrestrial villains. It is not a Marvel style film. Not about a cartoonish superhero. This is a movie of a realistic universe being intervened by a fictional element (Superman) in catastrophic situations, that you know are lost, until the superhero saves the day. This was the first time in cinema that people watched a pessimistic scene (Lois Lane falling from the helicopter) being changed abruptly to an optimistic scene thanks to a superhero. The feeling you have watching something like this for the first time is incredible, because it is what you really asked to God itself to happens when you are watching something like that in real life.
For some reason (or maybe for this reason), Superman is hated by current Hollywood culture and there are no good movies of superman in this century. And when they make one, it is about an evil superman, a dying superman or a boring one. That's why you find Superman as the more boring superhero. That's done by purpose.

Christopher Reeve WAS the ideal actor to play Superman. 6'4", he trained a lot to build up his muscles for the part, and he already had the superhero handsome looks. He was also a super nice guy, studied with Robin Williams who became his best friends. They were an odd couple, the tall, handsome Reeve and the kind of funny looking wildly talented Williams.
On May 27, 1995, Reeve broke his neck when he was thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia. He landed head first, shattering his first and second vertebrae. In fact, he was basically decapitated; the only thing that kept his skull close to his body, was his skin. He had fusion surgery during which his skull was attached to his spine again, but with the first two vertebrae crushed, he remained paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life, depending on a ventilator to breathe for him. In early October 2004, he was being treated for an infected pressure ulcer that was causing sepsis, a complication he had experienced many times before.
On October 4, 2004, he spoke at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago on behalf of the institute's work; it was his last reported public appearance. On the night of October 9, 2004, Reeve went into cardiac arrest after receiving an antibiotic for the infection. He fell into a coma, and was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York. Eighteen hours later, on October 10, 2004, Reeve died at the age of 52. Such a sad ending of such a nice guy.

    Superman: The Animated Series (1996 - 2000)
    The New Batman Adventures (1997 - 1999)
    Justice League (2001 - 2004)
    Justice League Unlimited (2004 - 2006)
    Also some animated feature films

Superman dont travel in time. He turns time back.
Nice reaction. The 70's sure was a diffrent time. Stealing kisses and slapping kids were not problematic but done for fun.

"Star Wars vibes" seems to be a common phrase used by the young kids today who watch this for the first time and it's certainly not a bad thing. It was the late 1970s when movies got fun again.

While the live action Superman movies have their ups & downs, the animated movies are where it's at. All stars Superman, Superman vs the elite & Superman Red Sun are fantastic! Highly recommend

And the animated shows are stellar as well. Justice League Unlimited really understands the characters and doesn't "dumb things down" storywise. The episode "For The Man Who Has Everything" is gut wrenching in how it shows that Superman just wants to have a normal family life but it seems like the thing least attainable to him.

I love scene in lois apartment where he turns from clark to superman to clark by just changing his voice and posture
Everyone used to laugh about Clark Kents glasses that no one would believe it as disguise😊. After this movie no one joked about that again. Reeve was fantastic actor.

Christopher Reeve IS Superman. He is the ONLY actor who embodied the character from the original comic book almost completely. And in his personal life too. RIP Chris!

Think you would enjoy Tom Welling’s Superman the best in Smallville. It is a 10 season television show of Clark learning to become Superman. It follows him from his freshman year of High School to when he puts on the cape.

Don't get me wrong, I love Smallville, but that was Clark Kent not Superman. There is a reason he doesn't fly until the finally, and Tom stressed this himself, as soon as he flew the character becomes Superman, and Smallville was about Clark and becoming Superman.

Without this movie, there would never be a cinematic universe.
This film gave birth to what you see today.
It’s the single most important super hero movie ever made. And there is no superhero theme out that will compare to what John Williams did.

Reeve will always be "my' Superman. I truly mourned his passing. Henry Cavil was great, too though.
Superman was always my favorite super hero. This movie came out when I was a kid (like 8) and I was hooked on Superman ever since.
I don't care nearly as much for Marvel and especially less now with the direction it's taken with Disney as its owner.

In the begining of the movie when young Clark is running past the train, a little girl is watching him through binoculars. The Woman sitting next to that little girl is Noel Neill, she played the original Lois Lane in the superman movies of the 0940s-1950, as well as in the 1950s TV show. Jor El was played my Marlon Brando who was Don Corleone in "The Godfather"

But I will never leave you. Even in the
face of my death the richness of my life
shall be yours. All that I have learned,
everything I feel, all of this and more
I have bequeathed to you my son. You
shall carry me inside you all your days.
You will make my strength your own, see
my life through your eyes, as your life
will be seen through mine. The son
becomes the father the father becomes
the son. This is all that I can send
with you, Kal-El. And not near so rich a
gift as that your mother sends along.
Her... love" still gets me every time
