To all lovers of classical music! This video is not about the best interpretation of J. S. Bach or about classical music! It is about the technical background of how notes or compositions were stored on a cassette at that time and can be loaded into the Roland MC-202. The sound settings of the synthesizers and the notes of Bach are examples from the Roland company!
I was just thinking, it's friday, time for Ducktronic & Audiopils, & voila here you are. That reminds me of the Commodore 64, if you missed one bleep the whole project didn't work, technology came long way since then. 👍
This is probably also a lot closer to what Roland had in mind when designing these instruments, as opposed to blowing up the world with whole new genres of dance music in the 80s.
In the 1980s my dad BUILT from scratch a 8 bit computer that used magnetic tapes to read the parameters and play classical music. He took a couple years to build it. Now we have those gadgets haha
This sounds great, very Giorgio Moroder / Wendy Carlos. I see also a lot of classical music snobs down there in the comments. Go listen to your well tempered clavier if you can’t appreciate this.
Thank you Doctor Nemmo! Haha... yes, you're right. I only did what ROLAND suggested to its customers as an idea (programming, instruments & sound settings). So I will pass on the negative comments to ROLAND. I hope they do it better next time. 😉
I am almost certain Bach would have used an ATARI ST and a Multimode Expander with an orchestral expansion. Just imagine what kind of music he would have done. And just dream about what he would have made with a Hip Hop card. Great job.
I bought a new MC-202 in the eighties. Waaay before MIDI that was. My friend had an MC-101. With a rented TR-808 we recorded many tunes. Haven’t heard this Bach tune for over 35 years… Thanks for this video! 😊
Had each of these units back in the day.. and recorded a lot of Bach and other classical works with them... all hooked up to an M-144 Portastudio.. 1 track for tape sync, and 3 tracks of 2-voices... Had dreams of being a simplified Isao Tomita... Didn't know myself when I bought my JX-3P and DX7... and ran them from an MSQ-100... all synced via the M-144... ... but as MIDI went berserk, so I retired the MC-202 and SH-101, etc... Still use my (heavily modified) DX7 as my controller keyboard though...
@@MS-Patriot2 Exactly what I'm intending to do when I retire in a few years :) Currently getting some more 'intermediate' theory into me, so I can get back to playing 'properly'... What wuth DAWs, VSTs, etc, it's so much easier to produce great music at home nowadays... but doing the production side of things well is a whole new skill set to work on...
Also this version of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata he did live ruclips.net/video/ep4-fFfEahE/видео.html It's fantastic (I think he's using the 101 & 303, but not it's not the internal sequencer on the 101)
This data cassette’s contents is available as a wav. file & how to load from a PC, on Sunshine Jones web page under non-fiction & other data cassette releases. Great video ducktronic.
Now this has me wondering - would there be a way to create custom data cassettes? Rather than manually programming the 202. I suppose it's probably easier to send convert MIDI information to cv/gate and then to the 202, though...
there is a program which can convert midi data into these data audio files that the 202 can understand and vice versa but i it's quite expensive as i recall.
using cv/gate routes it through the internal cpu which sadly causes delay better use din sync in and program it with a pattern through cv/gate and then use din syn and it will be perfect in time with the rest of the synths.
There was another data cassette i am searching for: File Number 201 - Star Wars Cantina Band File Number 202 - Popcorn File Number 203 - Modern Zodiac Someone out there?
I have also been looking for this for a very long time. I hope it is still somewhere, then I can make a video about it again. Please let me know if you ever have the files. 👍
Even though I don't listen to cassettes any more, I will keep the Sony deck. It looks good and you can use it from time to time (for old data cassettes). 😀
This is not MIDI. The MC-202 can store and read tracks via a special data format. I demonstrate how to play a track from the original Roland data cassette into the MC-202. 👍
With the added drum machine, it reminds me a lot of Jacques Loussier's "Switched on Bach" rendition in the early 60s. Fun fact the S.O Bach vol.4 LP with this piece was my first ever stereo LP I got as a birthday present.. 8 years before I could afford my first stereo turntable and amplifier :-) Thanks for helping me revive those long time gone memories!

Glad to hear that Bach's old 606-patterns comes into use after all these years 😎
Haha... Yes, Bach loved the 606 and used it very often. 😜
Perfect!
he didn't have a 606 but he got the samples from emu
And Bach said let there bass/highhat/ snare!
I am willfully going to believe from here on out that Bach owned Roland gear

I really like that 'harpsichord' sound. I wonder if my Roland SH-01A (101)can make such a sound?
