As a non-Christian, I've always thought that the Catholic church has contained some of the best, and some of the worst, exemplars of Christianity. But with cardinals like Cesare, you can see where the protestant reformation was coming from.

The power his family held made him think that he could get away with anything he wanted, and he was above the law. Since the Holy Church was the most powerful institution in the world and he was connected to it, he used it as a shield for his dirty work. Many people connected to the church always thought that it protected them from prosecution; since it was also said to be the safest place in the world, many people placed their trust in the church, thus those who abused it gave it a bad name.

It shouldn’t be surprising. God constantly refers to “the remnant” that He keeps for Himself. The remnant is the small fraction of individuals who actually believe. That’s why Christians quote the scripture and say, “You will know them by their fruit.” The fruit of God is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Think Mother Hale or Tim Tebow.

Look into other religions and you will find corruption as well. I have seen the downfall of lots of Protestants ministries because of corruption. All religions have good and bad. Be careful not to offend. I am a practicing catholic and cannot deny the corruption that exist in the Catholic Church, but there is also good and charitable work done by the Catholic Church. By the way, not all Catholic popes were like Borgia and his family. Today, popes do not have a nuclear family.

Also, do not say that the Catholic church is full of schemer, killers and sinners. All religions, to some degree, are full of schemer and sinners. Especially those religions that take your money by forcing people to give a percentage of their salaries. When I go to church, I make a donation, but we are obligated to give money. When I don’t have to give, I still attend church.
