  • This was stage 1/5 of the Swiss Epic mountain bike race in the stunning canton of Graubünden. The stage featured some of the most scenic single tracks I have ever seen. The highlight was the lengthy Corviglia flow trail, where we rode countless outstanding berms in a picturesque postcard. It took us 5:36:54 to complete the 62km and 2350m of climbing. Saving energy for the next four days was a priority, but we couldn't help it sometimes when the trails were so inviting.

    Having all the data on the screen is great. GoPros don’t give much of a sense of the angles you’re riding on, so to see the elevation makes it that much more real.

    Just amazing content! Thanks so much for putting in the effort of recording and uploading it. What category were you in? Who would you say the event is tailored for from a fitness/technical standpoint?

    • @bengoyette
      @bengoyette  2 года назад +7

      Thanks! It really was a monumental video production effort to produce 16h of content for the Swiss Epic. I'm glad you are enjoying it!
      We were in the Masters category. I would say this event is tailored to the athlete who can train 500h yearly. Because, to feel good doing a 30h week on the bike, a 15h week must feel like a regular training week first.
      From a technical standpoint, I think this for a capable expert rider who's proficient in both technical climbs and descents. Preferably with enduro racing experience. Because it never looks steep or big on GoPro, but it's serious technical stuff out there that would turn into a hike-a-bike fest if not ready.
      It's an event that will really push an XC athlete in every aspect of the sport. Totally worth it IMO.
      For reference, Peter is a Sports category XC / Marathon / Enduro racer with plenty of Grand Fondos under his belt. I'm a Pro category XC / CX / Enduro racer with only one year of XC Marathon racing.

    • @peterwilson1831

      Also in reference to Bens comment - while i've kept up my cycling fitness in general, i have done a lot less competition in the last 5 years since Ben and got a bit out of shape, the first 8 months of 2021 i had to ramp up fitness and lose 7 kg in the process. I went into the Epic in really very decent shape although still 2 or 3 kg over my old race weight. I was totally unprepared for the steepness and technicality of some of the alpine trails, as Ben points out, the GoPro does not do justice to how steep some of the single track is both up and down as well as being very rocky and technical in places. If you keep an eye on Bens metrics on the right, you'll regularly see descents of 30+ % and climbing well over 15 and 20% gradients. My legs actually held up really well for the duration but my body (back especially) was cooked by the end of it. I think I probably went to a few darker places than Ben. If i could roll back time, I would approach my training a little differently, spending less time working on general fitness and more time finding the steepest chunkiest hiking paths around me and trying to ride up them. I'd also go with a smaller front chainring!

    I guess putting a go pro on the back of a Fiat Abarth cannot compare to this... Or on its sun roof... Amazing Captive Cruising... at the easy convenience of sitting on my couch. Seriously though how in the heck are you not scared cruising 16 KPH that trail. Or battling a 16 percent grade at 8 kph.... what the H man. Forgot about the mileage your going... it was hilarious to hear you say 1 / 10 the way... My hat is off to you.
