- Watch as Macky botches the start, gets stuck in a fence and then chases his way back to a top-10 finish at Megavalanche 2024. Unfortunately due to adverse weather conditions we weren't able to start on the Pic Blanc glacier, however the wet conditions made for an absolutely wild race.

Yes, Macky has mad descending skills and great fitness which allowed him to reel in so many riders for a top ten - but his secret weapon is his grace, calm, and friendly nature with the other competitors. Chapeau Macky - you are a winner!

I have a question,me being a life long mtn bike rider,(55)well bmx first ,actually i recall only road bikes 10speeds were the only peddel bikes,any way i was wondering on his derailer and his 3 pc crank,what are the teeth count on each including the derailer? The reqson i ask is when he come to riders he is about to overtake and pass he does so quickly and they dont return the overtake pass.i know body strenth is a factor but i also know the teeth count on derailer spkts and 3 piece sprkts will be a big factor if not as much as human factor if not more.i dont see any one over taking him on this video.i know a racer if teeth count is out of norm as i suspect,one must have secrets but id like two know if thats how he is able to overtake and pass others.
A gentleman in beast mode. No big, just downhill on a slick goat path through the clouds, at 30+mph, cranking 500+ watts, peaking at 800+, casually wiping mountain muck off the lens for the folks at home. Riding on the edge, literally.
20 minutes in and climbing with a HR of 125? I hit that when washing the dishes. You're a beast. No Doubt.
Jep, also saw that and was wondering. But you know, sometimes the HR sensors get confused (bad signal) and you see these artifacts. Sometimes I also see something ~80, when I am more at like 180 :D And when you listen to his breathing it really sounds like >170

@@DerDanachDenkendeit may be, that during that full blown sprint, he went anaerobic, the HF, went down, while fully focusing on the muscles, and ramped up tight after. I felt (and hand measured to check the sports watch) that often during very hard gym excersizes.

If you can do better in qualifying and get a better starting position you could definitely compete to win.

2 Observations: your XC fitness seemed to really pay off, and, 2. your sportsmanship is exemplary.
I TOTALLY see this one as Mackey saying, "now that I know the race a bit, let's see if I can do better than 8th next time". Though 8th is incredible!
And I LOVE that you showed more things - your power, your heart rate, your speed. It was almost like I was watching Ironman from his mask...
Got to say...Lo deserves a piece of this top 10. Macky was flying by Euro riders with ease.
Damn I'm only halfway but watching Macky reel all those riders in on the climb like they were standing still was SO DISRESPECTFUL in the absolute most polite way. It's as if they weren't even moving. BRAVO! Now I must get back to the rest of the race.
Update that was an awesome race and the other riders should be grateful of two things 1. The race wasn't any longer and 2. There weren't more climbs because Macky absolutely had the Head the Heart the Lungs and the Legs to reel every last one of them in.
From K2N to Megavalanche is insane. Awesome job. I got a chuckle out of seeing you pass up some the pro euro mtbers I follow on RUclips.

I've been combing through other riders' channels to try to find followcam footage of you. If you haven't already found it, Baptiste Bachelet has about ten minutes of good footage of your riding in the middle of the race before you disappear into the distance. It really shows how much you were sliding around in those muddy sections. What a great performance!
Ton of respect to anyone who can complete this course. Someone who starts 100th and finishes in top ten is a super athlete. Especially in those conditions. Well done.
Have watched Megavalanche many times; but, this ride was certainly my favorite. Great job Macky!!! And thanks for cleaning the camera lens too.
This was the best 40mins of my last few weeks. Being in hospital with pneumonia and not being able to ride, this really had me on the edge of my seat. Is there any MTB discipline you can’t ride Macky??? You were an animal on this course mate. A massive congratulations mate. Well done big fella 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

That was one hell of a race Macky. A while ago I said that you were one of the best riders in the country. I now have to correct myself. You are one of the best riders in the WORLD!! Some video a long time ago Syd made a comment that there's few to none that she trusts their line choice over Macky. There were some sweet line choices that proved her point perfectly. Super stoked to see you in the Mega!
Careful... It's quite an addictive race :) Super result, if only for a better start then I definitely think podium is on. The Mega from the Glacier is a totally different beast and really will play into your strength on the pedals... Awesome!

I can’t believe the Heart Rate in the video was correct. 700W+ and the HR was in the 130s 🤯 💪. Super Impressive, congrats Macky .
I thought the same thing, he was in Z2 for like half the race, then it finally began to rise.
data seems pretty off for the first half of the race. his heart rate drops dramatically during a 500 w climb for example. chest HRMs get weird in the cold and give low data in my experience so my guess is that the data improved as he went down and it warmed up.
Nah, it’s just incorrect. It drops during climbs and shows 30wt lol
There was def a a period where it absolutely was not right. He was blasting 700 watts and his heart rate was declining to 118 or so if I recall.
Glad it's not just me who thought this. I get he is in great shape, but pushing out those kinda power numbers at under 120 bpm seems impossible. His breathing also sounds pretty strained, not what I would expect from a zone 2 effort.
It's truly heartwarming to watch Macky crush and embarrass droves of park rats with his ability to pedal up a hill
I'm also a fan of having the data on the screen and would love to see that put in your regular videos

Macky, when I watched you in the BC Bike Race last year I was absolutely impressed with your performance knowing the level of riders you were up against. I had an all new respect for you. Watching this video, that respect is now through the roof! OMG! I was on the edge of my seat for the entire video. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. What an amazing display of skill and nerves, riding what looks unrideable. I swear that my HR was almost as high as yours while watching from my chair, cheering and shouting at my screen every time the position counter went down.
OMG! I saw the glove and was like, "oh! They like Syd and Macky!" And then I realized 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ haha. Stellar attack Macky!!! I also enjoyed that this was like a lot of Megavalanche videos--no preamble or voiceover at the start. You can tell how much you're focusing because you're so quiet! I'm used to hearing the snips of you talking to yourself more 😂 amazing job!

Holy sh*t! Now this is what mountain biking is all about! You never cease to amaze me when I watch your downhill and enduro races! I'm blown away and fell in love with the sport all over again.
Personally, I like the higher camera view. You can see more of what’s ahead. But as an arthritic 90 year old with COPD, I am just grateful to watch. Didn’t have this in my day.

Wow, that was fun to watch! For viewers like me, who don't actually race mountain bikes, that raw footage from start to finish really gives a sense of the intensity throughout the race. Just watching it, I think my heart rate was matching Macky's a few times. Well, maybe not quite. I was ready for a rest at the end though. Thanks for the special treat!
That was straight up nuts, I cannot believe the speed you carried in the mud like that. Pretty sure my heart rate was keeping up just watching!
Sitting around, three weeks into a broken bone on the tip of my thumb, and a couple really tweaked joints, with a few more weeks off the bike... this is just what I needed. And didn't even have to wait until a Friday night posting!
also, I've been going back and watching some early videos... just last week I watched the wet and rainy enduro session in New Zealand. Seems quite appropriate to jump ahead to this. I hope your travels home were much better than what you had many years ago.

I love watching Macky’s heart rate spike with zero watts and drop down to the 120s when he’s pulling 400+ watts! My hands started cramping just watching 🤙
The question was which angle do you like better..... Personally I really like a mix of the two...but that means extra cameras and a whole lot more editing. BUT....The real answer is....whatever camera angle you all put out is the angle I want to watch. 😊

I'm impressed, way to slaughter the mountain Macky. I was watching and cheering you on as I watched the video. For someone who was not from the region, not familiar with the course or the slippery and sticky European forest mud you rocked it. The top half of the course you simply killed it through the rocky section and it highlighted your bike handling skills. The when you entered the forest again your skills on the bike shined as did your fitness level. But, I can't believe you let the guy in yellow pass you, LoL! Amazing race, amazing finish and amazing video. Congrats!
That was an amazing, brutal film. It was incredible. You have a crazy amount of skill and cardiovascular capability. I would file those race conditions under as bad as possible and still racing. Wow!

Megavalanche is always great to watch and you smashed it in those conditions. When you crossed the finish, I saw a fellow countryman, and our national champ enduro, made it safe down the mountain.

After going back and watching all the British freerider's channels doing the Mega and coming and watching yours, I am absolutely amazed that you were able to come through and clean house like this. It was really fun watching that organge and teal Syd and Macky jersey blur past on those other videos. And with poise and sportsmanship we have all come to appreciate. Well done. One of the most epic POVs I've seen in a long time.
I am so glad to see you hit this race! I don't know why, but this is one of those races that I have really grabbed onto. I would love to be able to run it myself, one day. But I'm an old man (not really, but I'm older than you, Macky) and I don't think it's in the cards for me to run it. So I now get to live vicariously through you (a man I've never even met). Good job with your placement! As far as I know, this is your first run on this one. That's great work!

You didn't have to tell me during the mud ride to: "consider it an immersive experience". I was already "immersed". That whole section was cool AF! What an intense and scary, awesome ride along. That was just simply "bad ass". And It was that much cooler that you're chasing a guy that's a pretty bass rider too. I already said it but, "cool AF"!

Both angles of the camera were perfectly fine to me. The handlebars give it a more "real feel" like I'm actually riding, but it doesn't matter. Awesome job Macky and absolutely insane race. Your videos are the only way I'll ever be able to 'ride' a mountain bike so thank you for all you and Syd do in putting work into this channel.

Impressive ride after that botched start. The early section on this route seems particularly unforgiving of setbacks like that. I appreciate the extras like speed and standing. Some neat opportunistic overtakes on the singletrack and great endurance on the big hill. G'luck next year. Thanks for the vid.
