There's an inaccuracy you missed at the beginning. Asteroids aren't that close together. They are thousands of miles apart, yes, even in asteroid belts. It would take forever for one to even be close to *touching* another asteroid.

I'm honestly disgusted by those people saying "but it's for kiiiiiidzzz". Not only it is implying that children are dumb with no
standards or sense of criticism, but it's also a very LAZY excuse. It's possible and EASY to make dinosaurs look cartoony and interesting while still being accurate, stop using children as an excuse for outdated designs.

If it's for kids it is even more inportant to make it acurate. 1. They are learning, don't start them of on inaccuracies. 2. They don't have any previous nostalgia for the old outdated designs, so why use them? 3. They will love any dinosaurs. "For kids" is not a good argument!

I hate that people are bringing up the "it's a kids movie" excuse.
Just because they're kids doesn't mean they should be given moronic entertainment! I grew up watching renaissance era Disney and Don Bluth movies that didn't hold a kids' hand or have them share the same "friends/family are your strength!" or "sharing is caring!"; I had nightmares from that damn owl scene from The Secret of NIMH and was really confused why Quasimodo didn't get Esmeralda in the end because good guys are supposed to get the girls in the end, right?
But they taught very important lessons: a mother will do ANYTHING to save their child and not everything will end up a happy ending (and I'm massively kinkshaming Frolo, jesus) respectfully.
Now I really enjoy the creativity and some of the really deep shit some animations are willing to dive into (the first few minutes of Up, racism in One Piece, how Katara had to be forced into using taboo Bloodbending to save her friends)-same goes for any form of entertainment-but you need to look for awhile to find that kind of stuff.
Which is why I have an arsenal of good shows and movies to show to my niece/nephews when they're older.
Also, awesome channel; I LOVE paleontology and enjoy the hell out of the cryptid vids -even though I enjoy the lore out of artistic expression- you should really check out the Hopkinsville Goblin or Bray Road Beast cases!

Okay, you know what bothers me the MOST about The Good Dinosaur? When it comes out, NO ONE in the paleo community will bat an eye on how crappy of a job Pixar did with their research, and will just dismiss it as "cartoony". Meanwhile, Jurassic World, which was a SEQUEL to a movie from 1993, and WANTED to keep the designs consistent BECAUSE its a sequel, gets all the hate even though the dinosaurs in that movie are MUCH more accurate than the ones in this one! No.... no I didn't say they are accurate, I said MORE accurate. Pteranodons without teeth, none of the dinos drag their tails on the ground, and the apatosaurs don't have broken knees (Arlo's front legs are bent like those of a horse while having the feet of an elephant, it's really distracting once you notice it.)
And this is where the problem lies. The Good Dinosaur is a new IP. It's a fresh, new idea that didn't have any movie pre-dating it, this was the first REAL chance for us to get a dinosaur movie that was both GOOD and ACCURATE. Why is it so hard for film makers nowadays to put both of these into a dinosaur movie? We get inaccurate movies like Jurassic World and this, but are at least entertaining. Or we get movies like Walking with Dinosaurs 3D, which are so painful to sit through. I'm going to see it anyway, but the fact that the dinosaurs and other animals are outdated by over 50 years is NOT going to make it one of my favorite Pixar films...

@Rick W: The first movie portrayed it more like they were going for accuracy when it came to the dinos. And for the most part, I think the movie creators actually were. At the time it was the most modern depiction of dinosaurs on the screen. There was nothing like it in pop culture. But since then a lot of stuff happened in our understanding of dinosaurs.
When Jurassic World came to the scene it had a bit of an issue. Either go with the inaccurate early 90's depiction of dinos. Or go with a more updated look. They decided to go with the older look. And if I was in their situation I would likely do so too. Though I actually would be mixed it up a bit and have it be clear that the dinos the park presented were not proper dinos but a creation of genetic engineering for entertainment purposes.
I may not have paid much attention when I saw the movie however so I am not sure how well they conveyed that the dinosaurs were a man-made creation and not copies of past creatures. I mean I would likely have as a writer make this as a central theme of the movie where one discusses if it right of Man to exploit nature in this way. What role do we have now that we can actually start tailoring life with technology like CRISPR. Technology that was not even around back when the original movie was made. (Also I would present a dilemma rather than a solution in the movie. We do not need a morality tale about how boo hoo, genetic engineering is wrong. I find good sci-fi more present you with interesting ideas then try to give you a solution. Because in most case there are no easy solutions)
To have a few more accurate looking dinosaurs in the movie to contrast with the fake monster would have been nice.
As I understand part of this was actually what the movie was going for. But the movie lacked to grab my attention so I may have missed those parts. Which is too bad if that is the case. To be honest the thing that sticks with me the most from that movie was the nostalgia bits. Though come to think of it. The Raptors the main protagonist controlled for parts of the movie actually shows a bit of the dualism of Mans ability to control nature can be used both for good and for bad. Maybe they actually did make the movie I would. Just that I did not notice it...
I may have to rewatch the whole thing now...

Actually, I saw a documentary exploring the possibility of humans existing alongside dinosaurs in an alternate reality where the KT extinction never happened. They explored the idea where, since trees were evolving fruit, that small mammals could have evolved to climb the trees in order to eat them. This would lead to small primate-like mammals that could eventually lead to a much smaller and tree-dwelling humanoid species. So basically awesome dinosaur-hunting monkey-people.

+Mike 1738 It's not stupid, it's actually very accurate, if the little guys had feathers, why can't the big guys have it too? Yutyrannus was 3m tall and had 9m in length had them, that means the others very likely did too, and what do you mean some T-Rexes had it and some didn't? They're the same specie, so they must have the same traits, unless they are born deformed and ugly and are problably going to die, and since the rexes are...y'know, they are all tyrannosaurs, it's the same thing as saying one bird specie has scales and the others don't, and birds are in the same family as dinosaurs which should be pretty obvious if you give a single shit to the topic.

yutyrannus isnt much smaller than a t rex if you double yutyrannus' size you get a carnivore bigger than t rex as yutyrannus is 3 meters tall and 9 meters long t rex is 4 meters tall and 13 meters long double 3 is 6 and double 9 is 18 so yeah yutyrannus isnt much smaller than t rex

Anything larger such as say bovines would just be an easy target to hunt and go extinct, maybe wolves and other canids would survive but never in large numbers. I dont see how or why primates would evolve unless it was to be just tree living small creatures such as lemurs or orangutans. Neither do crabs, but cartoon characters like Sebastian and Mr. Krabs have teeth in order to be given more relatable and vivid expressions in the face.

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 6 лет назад +7

"sentient" does not actually mean "human like intelligence". All sentience means is "the ability to feel or perceive things subjectively". There were almost definitely at least some dinosaurs that were capable of this; you'd be surprised at how many modern animals are classed as "sentient". It's really not a high barrier for entry. So dinosaurs likely DID reach a level of sentience.
We need to get rid of this ignorant perception that an animal is not "sentient" unless it demonstrates HUMAN like qualities. That's not what the word means, look it up for fuck's sake.

+TREY the Explainer and aslo in arks defense the info page of the trike or dossier says that the trike is a sub speices created when triceratops bred with stryacosaurus creating the species then both died out leaving the hybrid species on the island ark is a really good game and its actually pretty good at having its dinos and prehistoric creatures scientificly accurate and makes up for inaccuracies by having every creature on the island be a sub species that doesn't exist in real life like the dilophosaurus its the jurassic park style dilophosaurus but they made it so it evolved the short size and poison spitting to better survive on the island the story on how all these different extinct creatures from different time periods came to exist together isn't known yet but the story is currently being developed so its interesting perhaps some alien race travels the universe gathering creatures before they go extinct and putting them on a nature reserve containing the environment of their homeworld it would explain why the games called ark and it would also explain how the original species evolved into the sub species but anyways ark keeps stuff decently accurate with the four legged spinosaurus and the fully feathered therizinosaurus which their planning to add sorry for the long paragraph love the dino videos cheers :D

Actually, you missed a pretty big inaccuracy right at the beginning, although I wouldn't fault you for it, since you seem like more of a dinosaur guy than a space guy. But one thing that always bothers me is the media's depictions of the asteroid belt. The asteroid belt is not a ring so thick with asteroids that you can barely see through them. There are massive swathes of space in between each asteroid! It's only dangerous to fly through because the asteroids are moving so fast. I pray that one day somebody will get this right.

It could be that while the early dinosaurs wrists were unable to rotate, as they got smarter their arms evolved to be able to move more fluidly. It would be a pretty helpful adaptation for them as we see them picking up sticks and holding objects. I'm not defending this movie at all, but I just enjoyed the idea. There was a study done a couple of years ago that concluded that if the meteor hadn't hit, allot of dinosaurs would have died out slowly anyway as the environment changed. During the ice ages massive sauropods would have been driven to near extinction by the loss of both warm habitats and much lower food availability. They may have survived in the tropics, but many of the large species would vanish. This applies to many of the bigger dinosaurs, leaving only medium to small sized ones to inhabit the frozen north and south. Without these large herbivores, massive carnivores would be driven to extinction. It would be an even harder challenge for large eggs to survive the cold without freezing and, while incubating eggs would definitely help, it would still be challenging. Without many of the large dinosaurs around, the tundras and other cold areas would have many ecological niches available. This means that mammals, would have a chance to evolve from possum sized to much larger.
    I liked the video btw.

in fairness though, this is when dinosaurs started to evo mentally, like.... they could plan out stuff.. come up with ruses, communicate with other dinosaur species, have agriculture and build homes. Herbivores were just starting agriculture whereas the carnivorous species were still in a hunter-gatherer society with some larger species actually ranching cattle. Perhaps the reason these pseudo-buffalo creatures exists is because they were purposefully bred by larger carnivores, similar to how humans breed animals for purposes as well.. perhaps overtime some parts of the body change, like the crest getting smaller, or having fingers branch off a bit into something more like a hand to be more beneficial to a more intelligent species. We would not have gotten as far was we did without thumbs. The main events of the movie did not occur immediately after the asteroid avoided hitting the planet. There were millions of years between the extinction event and the events of this movie.
I do understand some of these other inaccuracies though. But little things like teeth and stuff, who knows? Again, millions of years occur between the mass extinction event and this movie.

They really need to stop over-using these dinosaurs ( Super Sauropods and some others are excused ), they actually need to switch over some roles like what they did in the Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Spinosaurus vs Tyrannosaurus was very popular that time, or maybe getting popular, but they inter-switched Spinosaurus with the Baryonyx, so I have a list of some dinosaurs that needs to take a break from being seen a lot in movies, but overall, they did good jobs animating them.

I know this was 1 month ago, but you seem pretty good at getting back to comments TREY
I'm surprised you didn't pick up on the locomotion. Arlo is able to gallop, which sauropods could never do because of their pillar like legs. I don't know But then his character design has bendier legs and emphasised knees.
    Innacuracies extra to the trailer:
-The T-rex are shown bounding along like Kangaroos. It's great visually but is that even mechanically possible?
-Arlo is claimed to be an Apatosaurus by the creators, another genus which did not live up to the KT event so wouldn't be present at the timeline of this movie. As an Apatosaurus he should also have vertebral spines along his back.
You very rightly criticise the claim about 'all dinosaurs' going extinct, but you yourself should be careful of making sweeping statements. There were mammals larger than opossums during the mesozoic. Repenomamus giganticus was a 1m long mammalian carnivore from the early cretaceous. It doesn't impact on your main point of course, but just mentioning it in the interests of accuracy ;)

It's not even that hard to do just a little research on the subject you're about to show to millions of children who know nothing about it and are likely not going to be educated about it. It's kind of insulting to a community of people who are interested in educating others about paleontology and people who have done actual research to draw the conclusions we have today, only to have it wasted by Disney showing kids this bs.
