One of those guitarists I could happily sit and watch play all day, just brilliant. The fact that you've took time out to do lessons of your songs is so great, makes fans appreciate you and the band even more.
The fact that you play in standard E, to me just puts you above the rest. You prove you don't have to stoop down to fucking A# to be heavy as fuck, heavy yet very melodic. Something the Metal world seems to be lacking, melody. Great one!
You took the words right outta my mouth. Down tuning has produced many great songs but Sylosis proves you don't need to down tune to be heavy. Dave Mustaine has also said this for years might I add...
You're a massive inspiration, Josh. Clean playing is so important and it's widely overlooked. Thank you for this in depth lesson, it's incredibly helpful!!
2020: Still trying to learn this song! Thanks for the tutorial Josh and I'd love to buy the official tabs for "Edge of the Earth album" if you ever decide to sell them!
someone showed this to me while livestreaming on twitch and now I'm fucking hooked on your band dude Those two notes that link the shapes that you play with the same finger but they're next to each other, and it's a super fast move, that's the thing I need help with and no one brings it up, everyone else can just do it! To me that's the hardest part and where everything falls apart
10:04 - 10:57 Very interesting part where Josh explains the way how he considers that sweep picking should be incorporated into music or at least how he does it in his music (Syslosis). Who would agree on this interpretation? I do!
The fact you can do that and sing at the same time is just RIDONKULOUS!!! See you in Nov! p.s. Too hard to get Sylosis merch man, been wanting as tshirt for a while!!
Hey Josh, first of all thanks a lot for the lesson, great and clean playing. One question: Would you mind making a lesson for ''Where the Sky Ends''. That would be awesome. Cheers
Josh, thank you for this in-depth tutorial. This left hand pointer finger transition between the Am and B chords (around 11:12) is the hardest part of the whole sweeping riff - any tips?
why ? they played everything in standard E . The fashion of 7 and 8 strings guitar is enough i am glad for bands like Sylosis which stick with standard tuning
well you can use a 7 string and still play the song in E, just using the extra string to add that low sound they look for when using inverted power chords.
KadizKovers I'm not into 7 strings. Firstly, I like being in E and I like the sound of inverted power chords, and secondly, I like classic looking guitars and gear. I just don't like 7 or 8 strings for our kind of music. We're not that kind of band at all. Personal preference.
There's some pretty close up shots on my hands in this vid you can try and watch but at some point in the future I'll do a sweep picking video. In depth technique and practices etc
+Crest Fallen Update: After one year (since the release of this tutorial) of practicing the sweeps I got to 75% speed. I hope to be able to play it in normal speed in less than a year!
Great track that man, first heard Sylosis years ago on metal hammer, conclusion of an age, ended up in jail for years stuck in there with absolutely shit music, always had my headphones on listening to the radio listening to bad choices of rock and the Sylosis empyreal came on prison radio lol I was fkn bouncing, best band since the smashing pumpkins 🎃
Does anyone know if he starts the second arpeggio on the 9th or 10th fret of the fifth string? It looks like he starts on the tenth but it doesn’t sound right
NutsTesticles I have small hands and short fingers. I am also more a bass player then a guitar player. But when I do pick up a guitar, I naturally lean towards playing power chords with my pinkie. It makes it easier to keep my wrist straight.
i didnt think about freeing up the stronger fingers. I am always thinking about playing in a way to eventually stretch my fingers as far as i can i guess.
+Shawn Jones he does the inverted power chord with his pinky , this means he only needs to add his other finger on the string above to turn it into a traditional powerchord
The solo in this song is so underrated. Feels like the kinda solo that non guitarists appreciate massively as well
This guy really likes arpeggioes, and plays them damn well.

Rican GuitarGod And yet Mustaine is playing in D standard. Not a very good example.
Juan José Fonseca Godoy
D standard is just standard lower to make things easier to sing, there's no drop A chugging bullshit.
Cr4nium13 And yet Mustaine is singing like shit.
Juan José Fonseca Godoy
Yeah but that's not the point lol
I really like the use of sweep picking in sylosis
You're a massive inspiration, Josh. Clean playing is so important and it's widely overlooked. Thank you for this in depth lesson, it's incredibly helpful!!
Not really a Sylosis listener, nor am I a RUclips commenter, but this is pretty commendable.
You need to hear this album. It was amazing!!
Fantastic musician, seen Sylosis 3 times & each time your playing has been spot on as per album.
I've never looked at inverted power chords that way. I always see it as a fourth, this opens up so many possibilities musically.
One of the best leads in modern metal. Just insane 🙌
2020: Still trying to learn this song!

Great job playing your own song! Not even Herman Li can do that!
Herman Li is an awful guitar player, to be honest
💀💀💀
😬
Oof 😂🤪
Hey Josh, what's your favorite riff you've ever written?
where the wolves come to die has my favorite riff.
Teras, servitude
10:04 - 10:57 Very interesting part where Josh explains the way how he considers that sweep picking should be incorporated into music or at least how he does it in his music (Syslosis). Who would agree on this interpretation? I do!
...Isn't that "boring" example at 10:34 from a song by Trivium?
The fact you can do that and sing at the same time is just RIDONKULOUS!!! See you in Nov! p.s. Too hard to get Sylosis merch man, been wanting as tshirt for a while!!
+p4fizzle "a" t-shirt
I saw old video was deleted and i was confused! Good to see this awesome stuff again!!!
hello Josh i'm like your guitar tutorial can you do the "Kingdom of Solitude" it's my favorite song of all time ^_^

Thank you for sharing this!
You're a fucking beast Josh!! My favorite guitar player and Sylosis my favorite band! keep this way...

I was at Wembley last night, you are a fucking god.
Josh you're awesome!! Greetings from Argentina!
Will you ever play Earth's Dust live?
Thanks Josh
Saludos desde México excelente banda!
Hey Josh. Is it possible for you to upload a tutorial for the solo of the song?
I have some very basic sweeping down. I hope I get to this stage at some point!
Killer tone!
Vocal tutorial!!!
hell fucking yes :D
You play really melodic pieces that are missing in several music styles. Jeep like that man!
Keep like that!!
Tha fuck out of here,,,
I love you @Josh Middleton
Hey Josh, first of all thanks a lot for the lesson, great and clean playing. One question: Would you mind making a lesson for ''Where the Sky Ends''. That would be awesome.
Cheers
awesome! what chords are being outlined in the sweep, first one is a minor chord, but not sure about the second one.
My sweeps are clean but damn that spacing is tight nice skillz
You had me at hello
hello please can you post here the times up and down of a Sylosis hard right hand rythm ?
Josh, thank you for this in-depth tutorial. This left hand pointer finger transition between the Am and B chords (around 11:12) is the hardest part of the whole sweeping riff - any tips?
hey josh im a huge fan of you and your band i was wondering why dont prefer playing in D ?
Are there tabs available??
sweep show man
Can you do a tutorial on the solo? There's some ungodly shapes and patterns in there I'm dying to learn. I can't find any accurate looking tabs online
Can you do a tutorial for the solo of this song, I can't figure out the last fast lick
Nice video! That sweep is just godly clean!
Quick question: why not use a 7-string instead of using inverted power chords?
why ? they played everything in standard E . The fashion of 7 and 8 strings guitar is enough i am glad for bands like Sylosis which stick with standard tuning
well you can use a 7 string and still play the song in E, just using the extra string to add that low sound they look for when using inverted power chords.

Josh Sylosis
And thank you!!
I love you and your band. What an unique band
Josh, do you have any pick recommendations for sweeping?
awesome video. i don't even play guitar!
Hi Josh, do you have any recommendation on how to move the right hand when sweeping? I think that I have to much movement in my right hand.
There's some pretty close up shots on my hands in this vid you can try and watch but at some point in the future I'll do a sweep picking video. In depth technique and practices etc
Josh Sylosis Thanks a lot, keep it up, you're one of my biggest idols!
+Crest Fallen Update: After one year (since the release of this tutorial) of practicing the sweeps I got to 75% speed. I hope to be able to play it in normal speed in less than a year!
do you still have your kramer guitar?
No Josh I cant sounds so heavy in standart E :D
Great track that man, first heard Sylosis years ago on metal hammer, conclusion of an age, ended up in jail for years stuck in there with absolutely shit music, always had my headphones on listening to the radio listening to bad choices of rock and the Sylosis empyreal came on prison radio lol I was fkn bouncing, best band since the smashing pumpkins 🎃
men do you have the tabs of the song
Hi Josh. Tell me what is your caliber strings in the standard E
He answered this in a different video, but apparently he plays 11-49!
Can you imagine if he put that riff from 4:49 in his 4 levels of death metal with dean and claire lolllll
Does anyone know if he starts the second arpeggio on the 9th or 10th fret of the fifth string? It looks like he starts on the tenth but it doesn’t sound right
That's the B minor arpeggio, so it's 9
why do you use the pinky to do the traditional power chord at the start and not the ring finger?
I use my pinky for power chords too. Leaves my stronger fingers ready and in a better position for other chord changes and embellishments.
NutsTesticles I have small hands and short fingers. I am also more a bass player then a guitar player. But when I do pick up a guitar, I naturally lean towards playing power chords with my pinkie. It makes it easier to keep my wrist straight.

A black Gibson CS with extra thick strings through a JCM.. Go down to your knees guys, there will never be anything sounding more heavy than this!
0 dislikes, wow. Whoever reads this will probably dislike to be that one guy =DD
This will either inspire you or make you wanna quit. With that being said, I didn’t like playing guitar anyways.
Tuning Guitar?
standard tuning
Riffs & Records E Standard
No solo breakdown?? Meh.
Horrendously unsubbed
