- Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach talked about the tension in the band with Howard Jones that let to him being back, and he said he didn't want a third singer.
I think Jesse is a great vocalist and I still love KSE but Howard's vocals were pretty unique

I saw KSE in 2005 live and in the middle of the show, Howard started talking about how he does not know how much longer he can do this, saying he has a life to live and that touring was taking it's toll on the band, that it's not paying the bills without our constant support. I was so sad that day, KSE is one of my all time favorite bands, and hearing that made me think the band was going to break up soon. He lasted another 7 years after that though! But now it all makes sense why he said that to us, he had a lot of personal issues including his health and had to eventually leave. I'm so grateful for this band!

Jesses lyrics i find to be a lot more emo than Howards, you even see Jesse crying in the end of My Last Serenade's music video.
He did. But, that was only part of the reason. He was really, really battling with mental health shit and the stress of touring (as well as diabetes) was becoming too much for him so he called the quits. (I'm taking an educated 'guess' here)
Howard and Jesse both are the greatest things for kse. And both belong to the band. Anyone else would devastate the homeage

I like Jesse's studio vocals, but as soon as I listen to him live I miss Howard. Howard's live vocals were pretty much the same as his studio vocals. Jesse's studio and live vocals are so different it makes it hard to listen to either they need to not touch up his voice so much or he need to find a way to sing better. but, of course, I'm sure he and his fans think he sounds fine. *shrugs* too each their own I guess...
I saw Howard live and he kinda sucked to be honest.. Jesse sounds more raw and much better live. Brings in that Hardcore feeling
I've seen Howard live multiple times and he has been less than average every single time. He always sounds so muddy, like he's singing through a 1930s radio broadcast.
Jesse is a huge reason they got popularly nationally in the first place, but Howard oversaw the band as they really cemented themselves at the top of the heap. Jesse and Howard are amazing any way you cut it, no matter which you prefer, and we're indebted to both because without them, KsE might have faded into obscurity. They each served their purpose at the respective times in which they were called upon. I get tired of seeing people slam this band with their incessant whining about which singer is better, and why the new album sucks, and why they haven't produced anything of merit since 2002. Why do you even listen, what makes you want to come here and broadcast these beliefs if you don't care about the band? Wouldn't it be a better way to spend your time commenting on pages for bands you do like, or just going to listen to music of bands you like, instead of criticizing bands who don't play music the way you like it?
I'm not a big fan of the new Killswitch record, but the one before it was a lot worse. On the plus side, though, the Devil You Know track sounds pretty great, so if we end up getting two good bands instead of one, better for everyone surely?

Both Jesse and Howard are amazing vocalists and song writers, but also very different.
Howard does have more range, probably because of training and sheer body mass!
but Jesse has his own frequency, which works well with the band.

My favourite KSE album is "Alive or Just Breathing".
My least favourite KSE album is "Disarm The Descent".

Yea it's hard to argue that Alive or Just Breathing isn't their best album, but I thought the self-titled one that came out in 2009 was their worst. That said, their new album was pretty bad also in my opinion. I agree Howard is a better singer, but I was so psyched when Jesse came back to the band in 2012 because they put out their best album with him. After the release of Disarm and Descent and Jesse's recent vocal performances I really don't think the outlook for KSE looks good at this point. Howard's new band does look promising though.

This is as old as ozzy and dio with black Sabbath both awesome and it makes it hard but there must be a favorite. As bad as it sounds my favorite mine was dio. It took awhile but after years if listening to both It became clear. Even making certain songs more special. This will be just as difficult. My last serenade to me was better with Jesse and the song meant something since I would be unable to see him perform it live. But now he returns making Howards songs more a gift. Reunion!

i think jesses lyrics are a lot more positive then howards last album but i wouldnt say they have more meaning, there are some songs on that 2009 self titled that are very deep and complex, i would say its the deepest kse album ever made so far in my opinion

Already in the beginning, this video does show us the truth. Because, yes, Jesse was approached by Adam, and asked if he wanted to get back with the band. The thing is Jesse initially said no, because he thought he wasn't up to the task, but when the time for auditions came, he gave it a try, and he got in.

Jesse Leach is, to me, so much easier to listen to than Howard. With Jesse you get pretty straightforward metal and with Howard you get the more dramatic drawn out sounds that I don't like nearly as much.
Jesse is the original straight up respect but howard is still amazing in his own way obviously they have different ways of going about singing
I honestly didn’t know that, I’m glad Jesse came back so there wouldn’t be an 3rd vocalist because it probably wouldn’t have been good with a 3rd vocalist. Howard Jones of course is missed though.
Jesse also head bangs on stage and brings more energy and positivity to the band, howard seemed a little depressed at times and wasn't the same as he was back when he first joined the band and years after; he was a lot less energetic...the last record sounded dark and although the lyrics were supposed to be positive as said by the band, it didn't really sound that way listening to it. I loved howard but jesse brought the spark back.
And as i said earlier, Jesse couldn't just "accept" the job, he had to go to auditions, meaning he had the same chance as every other vocalist who tried out.
Even though i still think Howard is the better vocalist, ill give Jesse one thing: especially on disarm the descent, Jesse's lyrics seem to have a lot more meaning to them then what Howard did on killswitch's last record.
Jesse is the better vocalist imo, but I have an enormous amount of respect for what Howard has contributed to KSE

I like jesse better but its probably due to the fact I fell in love with the band during the first album when he was the original lead singer. Howard definitely has a unique voice, but saying jesse is a dude off the streets? it was his band first, and there greatest work will always be that first album, not taking away from howard but you kinda sound like a hater my dude

I've never seen a band get as much hate as KsE, especially from so-called fans. I've been a fan since 2002 around the time Jesse left. As such, I was a huge fan of KsE with Jesse. Howard was okay, and they still put out great music but I never considered Howard to be as good as Jesse. But I didn't dismiss Howard either,, because he had a great output. I loved When Darkness Falls, and Hope Is, for example. But I never wanted to see them live until Jesse returned. It seems if you didn't hear about them till after 2003, you prefer Howard. If you were a fan when Jesse was still with them before he left, you'll tend to prefer Jesse. I don't even recall Metallica getting as much hate as KsE ;(
I don't get it too man. Even though End Of Heartache and As Daylight Dies are great records imo (I even like the second selftitled quite a lot since it was the first album KSE released since they were playing), to me Alive Or Just Breathing is an evergreen. And I really love this hxc punk spirit Jesse is putting back in the band again (since he is strongly inspired by punk). Howard is an amazing singer and the records he did with KSE are outstanding but for me Jesse is the soul of Killswitch.

Jesse should have stuck with times of grace because the last killswitch was awful and I loved the hell out of the times of grace album.
The Times of Grace album was so good. I had such high hopes for this new album, but man was I disappointed. The new album blows in my opinion.

They keep saying different things. First Jesse said he had to audition like everyone else and he didn't think he was going to get it but here he's saying they asked him to come back? Feels like there's a lack of honesty going on.
right before they were going to announce Howard leaving the band they ask Jesse what he considered join and he said no. he asked if the band wanted to just do an alive or just breathing ture but they said they wanted to move on and find a new lead vocalist. when he decided he wanted to rejoin the band he saw that they had already made the announcement and decided they were going to hold auditions for new lead vocalist. he decided to audition and didn't think he was going to get picked until he read the publication that said he was the new lead.
Howard is better IMO, I just don't see it lasting with jesse. If it didn't work the first time what makes you think it will work now?
Because the last time Jesse wasn't emotionally prepared for the band, he was miserable and very emotional, in other interviews even the band admits that he changed a great deal and working with him is great

There's absolutely no way that Phil could juggle both bands. They're both way too popular. If he tried to do both, they'd both suffer and the fans would get angry. It worked out much better this way.
Tommy Vext was the best possible option. He is close to Howard in style but still has his own sound.

It comes down to what kind of metalcore you like.I never listened to AOJB until today and I couldn't even get through 10 minutes of it.I HATE that kind of stuff.I like some melody,old All That Remains, 40 Below Summer.Can't stand bands like Trivium,Slipknot and what have you.Plus, I don't care for Jesse's scream style, it has too much treble and not enough body, and he does that thing where it sounds like you're swallowing the mic too much.But, like I said, if you like the super death stuff...there you go.
Old All that Remains sounds like KSE when AOJB was out. Are you talking about ATR before TFOI or after?
Before.I don't think it sounds like that..it all comes down to melody.Most of TFOI is very melodic.
Daniel Cronk This Darkened Heart sounds very much in the vein of AOJB. Trivium are very melodic. They always have been as far as their guitar work goes. Not really sure what you are listening to.

howard was there for 10 years jesse for 3 before howard came on Howard made this band what it is and made it unique Jesse cannot come close to Howard and when he tries it's hilariously awful I wish the best for Howard and Jesse but there is only 1 Howard Jones and 100's of Jesse Leach's there isn't anything special or defining about KSE now that he's back when Howard belts out those baritones it's amazing there's a reason why Jesse is the lead singer now and the reason why is that Howard isn't Jesse didn't beat him out or anything they would rather have Howard than Jesse and that's a fact Jesse just sounds like every other Singer you can put headphones on and do a blind challenge and wouldn't be able to pick Jesse out of 10 or more singers Howard is the BEST

To everyone saying Howard is better or Jesse is better, I'm going to lay it out plain and simple for you.. they are both awesome in their own separate ways. Personally, I think Howard is a better vocalist than Jesse when it comes to technique, hands down. Now with Jesse, I feel he puts more emotion in his voice. He has a certain pain in his voice which to me, separates him from Howard. And when it comes to lyrics, Jesse blows Howard out of the water. Alive Or Just Breathing has some real powerful lyrics (Rise Inside and Self Revolution are prime examples.)

Actually I've been a fan since the first album came out although alive or just breathing didn't wow me much. But when howard joined on the end of heartache and I heard how much more powerful and melodic his voice was it just felt right to me. I felt like he really added to the group. I realize it's all personal preference but I thought the HJ version of fixation on the darkness was so much better. Overall (in my opinion) I think howard was a better fit musically. So no I'm not a fucking noob and I've never even played guitar hero... Also, My curse is one of my LEAST favorite KsE songs...

"Tensions in the band" leads me to believe that Howard just wasn't getting along with his fellow band members. With Adam being the producer, I can see how Howard would get fed up. Adam seems like the type to want it his way or no way. Kinda like how Lars is/was in Metallica. Plus the health problems of course but that is also controversial. He's in devil you know/light the torch now. They have three albums and tour just as Killswitch did. Maybe he just likes the guys in the band more than the guys in kse.
