Was prompted to change our smoke detectors when saw a tragic house fire on the news. We have the same old model detector and I was puzzled about how to disconnect. Also great info on replacement model and adapters. Thanks man!
Thank you for posting this. We're replacing the same model smoke detectors. It is really helpful to see the connectors and adapters closely so I'll know how to deal with them and what to look for at the store.
PLEASE buy photoelectric sensors for your outer hallway entry’s!! you can keep the ions in the bedrooms as fires are unlikely in the bedroom but PLEASE understand that you could be in danger if you do not change to photoelectric or dual sensor technology. IONozation detection uses radiation and old technology to detect fast flaming fires, and even then has been tested on any youtube video to take over 50 MINUTES!!! to go off. Photoelectric detects much faster at around 3-4 minutes of a smoldering flame. hope you are well!
It seems like Kidde I 4618AC smoke alarms have a 5-year warranty, not an 8-year warranty 9-year warranty, or 10-year warranty which is not what it should be like
Never buy ionization detectors, because they will not alert you for smoke detection very well. Start buying photoelectric detectors instead; because it alerts you faster than ionization detectors. + Suggestion here.

Thank you for posting. Very helpful
Why did you stop? It would have been great if you powered it back on and went through the led indicators and test.
pro tip: after taking out the battery of your smoke alarm, hold the test button down in case there's any more power still lingering in there.
I pulled the battery activation tab out before plugging in the alarm. Did I break it? Alarm keeps going off now when I install it.
Thank you need to replace same model. Do I need to turn off breaker?
I didn't
Yes, always turn off power to circuits you are working on.

Thank you for this video!
You really are an excellent instructor. I have a similar situation. Thank you for talking about the adaptor and model type of smoke detector.
I can’t get my adapter to connect to my old plug. The pins match up but I can’t get it to go together and click. 😢 What am I doing wrong?
