    No seats in the grass area because it’s the “batters eye” so batters could see the baseball better and no distractions. All stadiums have it.

    • @bostonrailfan2427

  • @JimmyLewisMows
    @JimmyLewisMows 3 года назад +378

    The area in center field with no seats is common at all stadiums and is referred to as the "batter's eye." It helps the batter have a clearer look at pitches.

    • @bas3q
      @bas3q 3 года назад +44

      The one at Angels Stadium is wider than a normal batter's eye in part because of the football seats they ripped out when they renovated Anaheim Stadium back in the late 90s. This was after the Rams left town for St. Louis...if you can believe that ever happened.

    • @JimmyLewisMows
      @JimmyLewisMows 3 года назад +10

      @@bas3q Makes sense. What's also interesting about that stadium is that beneath the field is a layer of soil (not sure how thick, but from what I understand it's not more than around 8-10"), and then it's concrete. This provides an added challenge to the grounds crew because they aren't able to push the grass roots as deep as they would like to in order to better withstand the stress of gameplay and other activities on the field throughout the year. The positive though is that field is Bermuda grass and that stuff can survive just about anything.

  • @greygamer6220

    That green area in center field is called “the batters eye area” Gives the batter a place to clearly pickup the white ball. I think some ballparks have different colors there but that’s the idea. That’s for the game day experience. Looks like something I might enjoy.

I remember, so vividly, watching a game on TV when I was a kid (I loved baseball when I was younger), Randy Johnson was pitching for the Diamondbacks and BOOM! A puff of feathers. What the HECK?! The announcers were confused at first, no one knew what they actually just saw. He pitched a fastball right into a dove! And it pretty much exploded and the body just vanished upon impact, turned into a cloud of feathers and bird particulate matter. Morbid, but fascinating to say the least. The turfed off seating area in Center Field is for the Batter's eye. I think stadiums are required to have some sort of a clear batter's eye so when batting at the plate, they can see the pitch clearly without moving fans, or worse, people in Center Field trying to distract the batter with gleam off the eye using metal objects, laser pointers, etc,,,

    This video, while entertaining, shows exactly why baseball attendance is on the rapid decline: pricing. The big appeal of baseball used to how cheap it was to attend a game. It didn't matter your income level, anyone could afford to go. I remember the days when my hometown of Tucson, Arizona had the minor league affiliate for the Diamondbacks, the Tucson Sidewinders, and general admission tickets were less than $9. You could sit anywhere you wanted in the stadium. I miss the old days of baseball.

    Before hot summer day games, batting practice is taken indoors underneath the stands. In fact, many players in a batting slump, no starters, or hurt players on the DL/IL will take cuts during the game. This helps the players and trainers get home to their families during home games.

    Nice Video Adam. Way back between 1978 and 1980 I worked for the radio station that broadcasted the Angels games. Watching your video reminded me of the time.....before the added stadium seating to accommodate the L.A. Rams move to Anaheim....there were NO seats or anything from the first base foul pole to the third base foul pole....other than the bullpens. The seating and other structures there now is after the 20.000 seat addition for football was removed.

    If you're standing at home plate looking out at the field you will notice that turf in straight away centerfield (to the right of the fountain) that's there instead of seats. That area is known as the "batter's eye." You will see that area in most fields be either grass, turf, or a green wall. They do that so the batter can see the ball coming out of the pitchers hand... hence the name "batter's eye."
    Can you imagine trying to see a 92+mph white ball coming out of someone's hand with spotty white squares in the background? That'd be so hard!! That's also what makes outfielder's positions so difficult when trying to defend a hard hit line ball and pop-ups as well. Stadiums with a dome roof have to have the same difficulty but with very high hit pop-ups. I think that will make you appreciate seeing their ability to get a jump on the ball before they even see where it's going. Watching the ball hit the bat and where the ball was over the plate. Inside pitches get pulled more often where outside pitches will get hit to the opposite field. (Most ot the time)
    Lol and that's my random information of the day that not a lot of people will care about. But if one person was interested that's all that matters. Lmao!!
