Some of his Rah Rah speech is based on legendary Notre Dame football coach..Knute Rockne..who died around 1930 in a Kansas cornfield…I’m from Kansas..They made a movie with Pat O’Brien in 1940 titled Knute Rockne:All American..Ronald Reagan, later President…played a young doomed football player, George Gipp…dying of cancer…but Rockne was one reason they pass the football today..with Notre Dame being a top school…passing became a weapon..
Same for me! This is my Dad's favorite movie (I love it too) and I watched it probably at least 6 times a year every year until I left for college, but it did not have a lot of these scenes. The Mary character I'm pretty sure was only in 4 scenes in the theatrical cut: signing people up for boosters, painting helmets with Rudy, at the bar where he lets slip that he's not a student, and at football practice when Rudy says, "Don't I know you?" Will have to look for this extended edition :)
@@airman9820same, I had no idea there’s an extended cut featuring all these scenes with Mary. These scenes should have made the original cut as they add even more emotion, especially that shot of Mary shedding a tear after seeing Rudy make the tackle in the game. Unreal!
The jerseys on the desk scene is artistic dramatic license..Coach Dan Devine has said he always planned on Rudy suiting up for the game…but it does tug at the heartstrings a little…
"Rudy, are you ready for this, champ?" "I've been ready for this my whole life!" "Then you take us out on the field." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Lisa Varga. Location Location Fact: One of only two movies shot on Notre Dame's campus. The other was Knute Rockne All American (1940). Casting Notes Fact: Ned Beatty plays Sean Astin's father. The year before, he appeared in Prelude To A Kiss (1992), in which he played the husband of Astin's real-life mother, Patty Duke. First credited movie role for Vince Vaughn. Cameos Cameos Fact: The real D-Bob cameos as the bartender in the movie. Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger appears in the final six minutes of the film, the real-life Rudy as a Notre Dame fan sitting in the football stands. Daniel 'Rudy' Ruettiger can be seen to the left of his Ned Beatty. Rudy is wearing a plaid driving cap and a dark coat with a white fur collar. Later during the cheering, Ned Beatty turns and playfully bats at the real Rudy. Historical Fact: Rudy (Sean Astin) runs his fingers down the list in a close-up two times. The first time he starts on one name, the second time he starts on another name. The two names he starts his finger on are the actual names of the two players who picked him up and carried him off the field. In the movie, Rudy is portrayed as having largely gone into the steel industry after graduating high school. In reality, he served four years in the U.S. Navy as a yeoman on a communications ship, which is never mentioned. According to Rudy, he has no brother named Frank (Scott Benjaminson) in real life. The character of Frank is all of the people who told Rudy he couldn't do it rolled into one person.
Another fun fact, Joe Montana was on that Notre Dame team and when this movie came out he tried to piss all over it saying that Rudy really wasn't that loved on the team. Everybody was just saying he was being a jealous little prick. But I don't know for a fact if that's true. LOL
That's crazy weird if true, to think a hall of famer, millionaire, someone who's been beloved their whole life could be jealous of a kid who had a once in a lifetime moment. But seeing the fragile egos of some of these athletes... I can believe it. 😒
My Dad went to Notre Dane and my mom went to St. Mary’s next to it…Because Notre Dame was not yet Co-Ed…her side of the family is in/from the South Bend area…so I spent quite a bit of time at Notre Dame…A cousin from her side of the family is one of the Irish Sessions musicians in the bar. I even saw Elvis perform Live there the year before he died. It’s a beautiful campus!
I love this! My roommate was Sean Astin's stand-in and we were all extras in the movie when we were attending Notre Dame. I've never seen this cut of the movie and I assumed all my best scenes wound up on the cutting room floor. At 30:27 that is William White (on the left), Sean's stand-in. I'm the one walking in the back while she talks about Holy Cross. Where did you get this version? Oh, and I was so excited to see this version I forgot to mention that Vince Vaughn and John Favreau met on set and were struggling actors and they decided to make a movie about struggling actors. That movie ended up being Swingers, which also included the debut of Heather Graham. It's pretty amazing what effect this little movie had on future actors and directors.
45:10 Joe Montana, who played at Notre Dame during this time has talked about it and said although the storyline is based on a true story most of the events in the movie are made-up. The scene where the team all turn in their jerseys so Rudy can play did not happen, there was no "Rudy" chanting and although they did carry Rudy off the field at the end of the game it was more of a joke than anything else.
Joe just seemed bitter at the whole situation for some reason. Joe was a freshman and was bitter some guy named Rudy got attention at that time. Rudy story is inspiring to a lot of people and for Joe to crap on it wasn't cool
is there video of this interview ? There is an article "The True Story of Rudy Ruettiger - the Notre Dame Legend Behind Rudy" that contains a 12-minute interview with the real Rudy - he corroborates most of what is in the movie (he estimated 92% of it was true). This is a good example of why you need to edit. A lot of times the director has to cut scenes that he really loves but he does it because it doesn't move the story along. None of these scenes make the movie better; especially all the extra stuff with Mary. Hell, I half expected her to hug and kiss him in the final frame.

At least this is what he states during the interview. I believe there is a youtube video of his tackle play also.

Wow, first time I have seen this extended cut. I noticed in the version I had seen, a lot of lines and scenes of the girl from Notre Dame were cut. Maybe they thought better not to make it look like there was also a love interest.

Miracle with Dennis Quaid is reminiscent of this, if you liked this you’ll enjoy that too as well as Hoosiers with Gene Hackman, one of my fav sports movies.
The REAL Dan "Rudy" Ruettiger is actually in this movie. There's a scene where Rudy's father is at that final game and at one point in all the excitement he turns around and grabs another fan behind him by the lapel. Your video does not show that moment but you can see him for just a moment by going to 41:44 ... Rudy is the guy behind the parents wearing a plaid drivers cap and a dark blue coat with a shearling collar ... that is Rudy Ruettiger.
Okay, if you lived within 30 miles of Chicago, that is not around Chicago, that is Chicagoland. I am not from there, but I loved liking right off of Lake Michigan. I am not a Notre Dame fan, that speech is Coach Knute Kenneth Rockne. And it was on a record because cassettes weren't widely used in the mid to late 1960s. They were too expensive.
I love your reaction I just want to say one thing. Him being carried off the field wasn't true. If you watch the documentary it'll show you that no player has ever been carried off of a field after a Notre Dame game.
She called it Kleenex.... which is how you know this person is from the Midwest.... we don't call it tissue.... also it is called POP.... not soda or coke.... LOL
Where did you get this version? They've added a whole bunch of new scenes and do you know what? They SHOULD have been cut. There are way too many pointless scenes with Mary. You always take a chance on what to cut and what to leave in but just because you made a successful movie it doesn't mean you have the right to now go back and change it. Hell, I half expected Rudy to marry Mary at the end.
lol at woke garbage. The new hollywood is now streaming, plenty of good series and tv shows. Nobody goes to the movies. Maybe you want to put up millions to create one for it to be streaming in weeks

They cut them because they didn't move the story along. This is why they also give awards to the Editor. They can make or break a movie.
Your reactions are always great, but when you can slip in a Secret of NIMH shout out, all the better. It was my favorite books/series of books when I was a kid. You had me at NIMH…you had me at NIMH. ❤
It's a true story
Miracle with Dennis Quaid is reminiscent of this, if you liked this you’ll enjoy that too as well as Hoosiers with Gene Hackman, one of my fav sports movies.
Thanks!
Dennis Quaid.... what the hell are you talking about.... you mean Miracle with Kurt Russell????
@ indeed I did, thx 👍🏼 Quaid was the Rookie
Rudy... excellent choice. Still waiting on "Breaking Away". Soundtrack is phenomenal.
Yeah you definitely watch the extended edition
The hidden gem of inspirational sports films
😍😍
The REAL Dan "Rudy" Ruettiger is actually in this movie.
There's a scene where Rudy's father is at that final game and at one point in all the excitement he turns around and grabs another fan behind him by the lapel.
Your video does not show that moment but you can see him for just a moment by going to 41:44 ... Rudy is the guy behind the parents wearing a plaid drivers cap and a dark blue coat with a shearling collar ... that is Rudy Ruettiger.
Neat!
This must be a extended version they added a lot more with that girl reporter, and tbh it takes away a little from the theatrical cut
Where did you get the extended version?
It was just the one available to purchase! It wasn't labeled as a director's cut or anything! False advertising.
No one with a heart doesn't cry at that jersey scene.
Where did you get this copy? It has more scenes than is usually shown on tv.
The sack at the end really should not have been counted because he was offsides when the ball was snapped. 😂
True only if the referees called it.
Another improbable sports movie…again, it’s football, and it is true, like this one…INVINCIBLE…Mark Whalberg…Philadelphia Eagles ..
Who is this Mary girl at Notre Dame?
I love your reaction I just want to say one thing. Him being carried off the field wasn't true.
If you watch the documentary it'll show you that no player has ever been carried off of a field after a Notre Dame game.
You should watch Field of Dreams
I have a Rudy autographed jersey..from the real guy, not Sean Astin..
Great movie to watch after ND got smoked by NIU in the biggest upset of the entire NIU football program!
I knew it was going to be a problem when you said you didn't have tissues.
There's a video of the real Rudy on that final play.
She called it Kleenex.... which is how you know this person is from the Midwest.... we don't call it tissue.... also it is called POP.... not soda or coke.... LOL
Where's Frodo and Smeagal?
several scenes in this version that didn't make the cut
Ned Beatty is such a jerk as Rudy's Dad in this, that I always feel like watching Deliverance after watching this.
I love football. You have to eat more girl. You are looking famished. And I love this movie.
I love to eat. Bring it on. ;)
Hell, I half expected Rudy to marry Mary at the end.
yeah the final scene with him running to the sideline and saying "You remember me" would not have made sense with those other scenes....
Theatrical version is better. More tight and concise.
Agreed.
It's sad to see this movie and see what Hollywood used to produce and then take a gander at the woke garbage they spew out non-stop.
lol at woke garbage. The new hollywood is now streaming, plenty of good series and tv shows. Nobody goes to the movies. Maybe you want to put up millions to create one for it to be streaming in weeks
@@drew5965 They are crap. But you enjoy them! LOL
@@trhansen3244you know people older than you and before your era felt the same way about it? That older films were superior because this, that and the third reasons. Your take on films isn’t special lol and the point being is ur opinion is subjective and you should calm down about the “Woke Agenda”. Maybe you should actually look for good films currently and not reminisce about films you were spoon fed to praise.
@@chrisv.423 They are superior and it's not hard to see why. They had better actors and were not solely driven to adhere to DEI. It's not hard to figure it out. Give it a whirl, wokeboy!
