Lovely orchid fair! That coelogyne spike looked really like a rattle snake. You and Liga had fun there! :) I'm glad your daughter decided to grow an orchid. Maybe in some months her windows will be full of them :) That's how it starts! :))

I have the bansfieldara gilded tower mystic maze and I got it last year it just started to spike for the first time since I bought it, I can't wait it's a very large plant and I expected a beautiful display I repotted it and I had to change were I positioned it so the psuedobulb is smaller than last year's but I expect a huge spike like last year, I hope your daughter loves it as much as I do

Hey - you got my good friends Sara and Arthur on film (Burnham's) - did you chat to them? The vanilla orchid in their nursery starts in a dustbin, goes up to the the roof and has now reached the full length of the greenhouse - probably about 30 meters! You would just love their nursery! If ever you are in Devon? When we were there on the 17th, many coelogynes were in spike - some in bloom too. They have some huge specimen plants handed down 3 generations.
+Roger Frampton Yes, Roger, Ray Creek and Burnham were at the show. I spoke briefly to Sara, as I've done every year. But there are so many people and it's only once a year so she is not going to remember me.
I was somewhat underwhelmed with the vanilla. Also considering that in my environment I would never be able to flower it so it would have to earn its keep on the merit of its leaves. Of course if you have the right environment, any plant can look magnificent!
Burnham used to bring a lot of small flowering coelogynes to the show but I notice much fewer in recent years. I guess they didn't sell or maybe the big coeogynes are more fashionable!
I would love to visit their nursery some time. Of course :)

I wouldn't have a vanilla but I think they have got theirs to flower? But even when it's that big, it still looks straggly. I have a number of coelogynes but I'll be getting rid of the 'cool' ones as they just don't do well in my environment (along with kingianum). I'll keep the couple of intermediate ones. I'll be rationalising this year looking at my records to decide what to keep and what can go. Leaves room for orchids that do well rather than struggle. Although I know Sara quite well, I spend ages talking to Arthur - when I get the chance. They've probably got the best collection of restrepias around.
+Roger Frampton I remember Arthur was a real pet the year I got my first fancy orchids (the video about 8 orchids 6 years on). I was loitering around their stall waiting for my friend, Liga, and felt I had to explain why I was acting so suspiciously and not buying because I had pre-ordered. He brought be round back to show me my order and go through them and really entered into my excitement. He was very nice to me.

I wouldn't resist to buy that white cattleya ☺ The odontoglosum crispum x geyser hold it might be a little bit fussy about humidity, do your best with this one☺ ha ha ...what a mum doesn't do for her kids?? you let go your mystic maze ☺ but don't worry that is a common one now, I'm seeing it a lot in shops lately ☺
+Miracle Orchids I wasn't so impressed by the white cattleya. Maybe I am sick. lol. We will see how the girls go with their orchids. I am just really pleased that they want to try. Ori chose the yellow odotoglossum (possibly for the cool name) and Ishtar, as you saw, went for Mystic Maze. That left me with a Mystic Maze :)

What a nice display there, wonderful! And hehe, I have three tiny vines of this variegated vanilla - but they are not doing much for me, unfortunately. I keep them in moss on a moss-wrapped pole, but ... sigh. Well, at least they are still alive, so there is hope.
And I see, you try to get your daughters hooked, too :D I am sure Ishtar (what a cool name, by the way, is it a common name in Ireland?) will be very happy with the Bal..thingy ... Oncidium-type she chose. I'm sneaking around an Oncidium-hybrid that has been sitting in our local grocery store for a while now ... I guess I will nurse it back and give it to my Mom. She needs more orchid-variety, too, given she has only a ton of phals. That doesn't suffice at all :D ... and I have an excuse to have another orchid for a while :D

So I am buying for my daughters and you are buying for your Mum. It is all good as long as the orchid-love continues to be spread :)

+John Benedict ORCHIDS Oh, me too! And the one from Carly's Bridge was only being used as a stand for the big coeogyne :/ I would put it to much better use.
When we were in Sicily a few years ago in the Botanic Gardens they had all kinds of clay pots, stamped with the Botanic Gardens logo (and maybe the name). How cool to have a collection of clay pots like that from around the world!
I feel I have found a kindred spirit :)

Also I don't have any vermiculite is ok if I just use peat and perlite?
+fifi fifi Yes, repot anyway. Don't disturb the root ball except if there is loose soil that can be knocked off without disturbing the roots. Don't overpot and use a shallow pot. The one you are using is not ideal. It is too deep. Double perlite will be fine instead of vermiculite. Good luck.
I just re pot it and I am stoned! You will not believe this, it was poted in sphagnum moss and just a bit of soil on top and bottom, I feel like crying!!!! I hope it will survive, at least oen of them because I divide in two. Thank you so much for your help!
