    Awesome chat, could stay all afternoon listening to you both. But Roger has given a hint when he said he was going on a trip and that he might show in another channel. When he said that it crossed my mind he was going to Ireland 😊

    Hi Rachel your dendrobium thyrsiflorum will benefit from intermediate to warm conditions you can for sure bloom it in a west faceing window indoors it even doesn't need winter rest but weekly weekly wanterings because even being asian it doesn not comes from areas where the dry perioud is that harsh i have mine that did well in the west window and gets even daily waterings during the summer time and weekly regimen during autumn and winter lots of love marco

    • @GardeningatDouentza

      I think I will bring it indoors. Thanks

    • @marcopaganelli6059
      @marcopaganelli6059 6 лет назад

      yes this way it will also keep the leaves on the pseudobulbs for longer time and in time will have much more energy for flowering you don't have problems with space or light indoor luckily and it will grow fantastic for you in a few time. I beleive mine has flowered for the very first time this spring it was just on two bulbs but yet that was an awesome surprise to find on my way back home in portugal after i visited my family in italy i left it with buds forming and i found it blooming and it was fantastic because it was blooming during my dad birthday so i shown him the pic as a present from me.

    Two spotted mites start out beige with two dark brown dots on the back. If you have excellent eyesight you can see the dots with the naked eye. They turn red in autumn. There is also the false spider mite, which is smaller and more difficult to control.

    Roger and Rachel together at last! Hoping you're having a lovely visit.
    I would think 5 C would be OK for D. thyrsiflorum, depending on how long it is subjected to those temps. It tolerates that low in south Florida (at night but for short periods).

    Hi Rachel! Wonderful to see you and Roger together! I'm catching up with what I missed. Interesting about the rodrigesa with bacon fragrance (I think once Astrid said her brassavola nodosa smelled like sausages). It was fun to hear about the fragrances that interact and become like cat pee smell. Orchids are sometimes so strange! 😊 At around 17 minutes into the video you both talk about a dendrobium thyrsiflorum and you wondered if it had spider mites, and Roger tested rubbing he leaf between the fingers and didn't find spider mites. My guess is that at some point it had spider mites, and the plant got infected with orchid fleck virus as a result. I read spider mites are vectors of the disease, and sometimes plants can get it after an infestation. The markings the virus causes on the leaves looks just like this. If I remember correctly the disease isn't curable. The plant can live with it, but it might get those markings on the newest leaves. The disease spreads by shared water, tools, or insect bites. It's good to keep it at a safe distance from other plants if it ever gets mites again.

  • @j.d.8075
    @j.d.8075 6 лет назад

    There is finally a showy tropical Cymbid. that does not require cold to flower - orchidden.com.au/collections/orchid-plants/products/cymbidium-the-brightest - there are three native Cymbids in my region but the flowers tend to be small and not really showy, but still delightful.
    Dendrobium discolor, an Aussie native might be the way to go if you are looking for a Dendrob. in the spatulata section... the normal forms are large... okay giant, canes/stems can be 1.5 meters length if not longer but mature plants will throw multiple flower spikes. Flowers can range from gold through to brown, but there is a dwarf form but that is rather rare.

    • @reneesplants5556

      @@GardeningatDouentza Yeah, no point if you don't need to. 5°C is the lowest typical minimum here in Sydney, so a lot of us grow our cattleyas outdoors. No point building extra greenhouses for plants that can be grown natural. Hybrids containing a lot of Brassavola do not take it well though.
