      I tested our setup with a W meter and our Blackstar Artist amp is only pulling about 60W. My inverter is about 87% efficient so we are pulling about 69W out of the battery.
      W (Watts)=Volts x Amps. So your battery is say 40amps x 12.5V=500w/69W=7.2 hours of use from a full charge. Your big speaker is similar to ours and it uses less than 100W to make enough sound for the street. I have to admit I questioned the hell out of that and disbelieved the Watt meter I had but it nailed everything else perfectly. So I concluded that they must have some other way of classifying speaker power than power use. It makes no sense to me at all but with your ear drums bleeding it is only using about 150-200W.
      Long story short assuming your inverter can actually produce 300w (Many absolutely don't)you have enough of power to run 2 of those speakers and your PA and guitar amp if you want. But I possibly would not recommend running any of these cheap inverts too hard. Mine included and it's not cheap. This will mean you are pulling about 27-30 amps from your battery which will be getting near a small battery's limit for constant current draw.
      I highly recommend anyone getting an inverter to buy a Watt meter. They are fantastic.

      @@hanf71 Hi Sean. If I were to build another one spend the money and buy a Lithium battery. Our battery is a 130AH lead acid and since I built it I too have learnt a great deal. Lead acid (PB) batteries should never go below 12.2v the inverter will take them down to 11.5v. This has happened a few times now and it has defiantly reduced the capacity of the battery. I spent good money on that battery too. It was by no means the cheapest on the market.
      We recently busked for 5 hours running 2x Guitar amps, 2x DB F12 speakers, 1x Tablet and the Presonus desk. By the end of it the battery was down to 12.2v.
      Frankly something like this would possibly do the job and far cheaper than building one. Just remember to never ever let a battery go flat! That's any battery I mean.

The size will depend on how much gear you plug into it, and how long you need it to last. If you only plug in a few items that don't draw much power and use it for a few hours, I recommend a Pure Sine Wave inverter like the GoLabs i200 from Amazon, or something similar. The black switch on your powerboard is an overload trip - all powerboards must have one.
    A surge protecting circuit is a different device.
    You can estimate the life of the power supply by knowing the power consumption. You can either work it out roughly by looking at the power consumption on the panel of the each device and multiplying it by the percentage volume/capacity you set the device at.
    38 Ahr at 12 volts = 456 Whr
    So you could theoretically run a 456 Watt load/device for 1 hour. Or 45.6 Watts for 10 hours.
    This doesnt include the losses by the inverter so the life of the battery may be about 3/4 of these values depending on how efficient your inverter is
    (also the power output of your PA is different from the power consumption so you should use the rating or power consumption value written on the back of the equipment. That is, your PA delivering 1000W is not going to consume 1000W. The specification say that it consumes 18W on idle and a maximum of 74W at 1/8 power)

  • @dannyrusso8279
    @dannyrusso8279 4 года назад +3

    I agree a pure sine wave inverter is the way to go when using with PA equipment. Mimics the power that you get at your home. Anything else will cause unwanted hum, and isn't the best for the electronics. I use a 500w inverter, and even power a small fan that I always like to use while playing. I'm using a JBL Eon One amp, a Yamaha mixer, as well as a few other peripherals, and of course my electronic keyboard.

    • @justinnaramor6050
      @justinnaramor6050 2 года назад

      Yay! You said you use a pretty keyboard! :))))))))))
      Yes, I do in fact think electronic keyboards are pretty :)). They sound pretty (or at least they can).
      Seriously though, I've been considering trying something like this myself (although it's a bit different than what was shown here): I have a portable AC power bank, meaning that it combines batteries and inverter into a single unit. It also has USB ports for powering/charging any USB devices like a phone or computer or whatever. So the idea is to play my electronic keyboard outdoors, where there may not be power, and I can have my own little power supply in the form of my power bank. Should work well. Just haven't tried it yet. The keyboard also has its own speakers, so I do not need any fancy speaker system or anything of that nature (I'm not looking for "amazing" professional quality sound as this is all purely for the fun of playing music). I'm not even expecting an audience (my goal here isn't necessarily to attract people and gain recognition or whatever), though of course it never hurts if someone near by just so happens to hear the music and wants to listen.

      The original Eon One has a 10" speaker and bass is no problem. As a matter of fact, I just replaced the JBL speaker with an Eminence Neo speaker, which was a nice improvement to low end. The Eon One Compact I believe had an 8" speaker. That version has a built-in battery. JBL made the Eon One line confusing, with several variants.

    • @tomsoutheymusic
      @tomsoutheymusic  4 года назад

      Hey sorry for the slow reply, usually deep cycle batteries ARE lead acid.
      So the main difference you want to look for when getting a lead acid battery is that it is Deep Cycle (meaning it has a long, slow discharge, ideal for electrical appliances).
      The other type of lead acid's are like car batteries. These only work for a few seconds when you start your car engine, so they use looots of power really fast. Fast Discharge. And then they do almost nothing until you need to start the car again.
      Boats and Caravans use Deep Cycle or Leisure batteries. Usually it will say on the sticker! Hope that helps!

    • @tomsoutheymusic
      @tomsoutheymusic  4 года назад

      Hey mate! 1000w pure sine wave will work great for most setups!
      It depends how long you will need it to last.
      Get a deep cycle battery (lead acid).
      Anywhere from 12AH-80AH+
      The (AH) amp hour, is the batteries capacity, if you want it to last aaaall day long. Go for a bigger battery size (80Ah).
      Of if you use it for just a 1-2hr gig, go for a smaller size (20-30Ah).
      That's a rough estimate! Goodluck mate!
      Also,
      Bigger means Heavier. So maybe go to a battery store and sus them out. A 80Ah battery is about 20kg!
      I use a 36Ah battery and 600w pure sinewave inverter and it lasts ages. :)

    Random question but have you ever had any issues with buzzing or strange noise coming out of your amp on this setup? I have been trying to use a solar generator ( basically just a battery pack with a lithium battery in it) bought off of Amazon for my line 6 spider valve amp and it's been making a terrible buzzing noise. It's a pure sine wave power bank so I have no idea why it's been happening ( voltage looks as though it matches up fine and there's more than enough power available) and I even have two different solar power banks I've gotten from Amazon and the issue happens with both. Kinda freaked out about getting shocked or something but was just wondering if you think this type of set up would be better at preventing buzzing and any safety hazards?

      !!Yes - Similar !! I’m having a buzzing issue when I’m not earthing the strings on my guitar.. I have a completely ‘quiet’ set up when plugged into earthed wall socket, but get noise when I change over to plug into the battery and inverter.. only running a 100watt stage amp and boss pedal board.. I suspect I need a ‘power conditioner’ or introduce an ‘inverter earth’ … any feedback would be appreciated !

    • @tomsoutheymusic

      Sack trolley! The trick is having a set-up that you can transport in one trip.
      I keep a foldable trolley in my car, im able to move 1 x pa speaker, pedal board, plus battery and mic stands. And then the guitar in a backpack style case!
      Once or twice I've had to bring my car around to a loading dock.
      I have a padlock and cable which I rarely use to lock, speakers mixer, guitar case all together.
      That way its impossible to carry one item away as they're all connected.
      Get a good trolley! 👍

    • @JoeDoe2
      @JoeDoe2 3 года назад

      @@tomsoutheymusic I don't now what the equivalent American English word is for 'trolley' or 'sack trolly' but in America, a trolley is a mode of transportation, especially the type that operate from cables underground, or electrical wires above. aka cable car. It is an outdated vehicle from the past, except that they are most notably found in San Francisco, a big tourist attraction. SOme city buses are designed to look like old trolleys, but they operated on traditional fuel, no cables or wires above. Some people stand on the running board on the sides and hold on, instead of sitting in a seat. You can do a Google images search for 'san francisco cable car' and I'm sure it would show you. Perhaps you can do a video showing what your sack trolley is, and I'll try to figure out the America term is for what you have, cause right now I don't know. You're getting a great, loud sound. The smaller speaker would be more than enough for me. I may start out with just one of those small battery powered amps. Are there any brands you'd recommend? I just need people on the street nearby to hear me, not people 3 blocks away.

    Thanks for the video. Everything I have already has it's own batteries EXCEPT for my mixer. (+I now ur supposed to use a sine wave invertor for music equipment..) Big question is, if I was using a portable camping AC powerbank, would I still need a sine wave inverter if the only thing I plugged into it was an analog mixer? (although it does have built in FX if that matters..?)

    • @tomsoutheymusic
      @tomsoutheymusic  4 года назад +1

      Hey mate! Sorry for the slow reply. You'd prrooobably be ok. If it's just the mixer.
      It's mainly speakers that are best on "pure sinewave" because they have magnets and coils inside :)
      I'd say it should be okay? But I can't be sure. There's a chance you might get some hum or noise from your mixer (potentially..)

      Hi Ary! Definitely some sort of trolley. I have used a few, currently I use an old cooler box to store the battery and cables. I have a strong folding sack trolley :)
      The pedalboard power usage is very very small, so it doesn't change the overall life very much.
      I have never run out of charge, and I often play 3 hrs straight maximum.
      I think the overall charge would be over 5 hours but have never needed to test it.

    • @tomsoutheymusic

      Lithium all the way! That's true! Lithium are lighter and better and you would need to buy a deep cycle twice the size to get the same life out of it.

    Hi, Thanks for your informative video, first of all!
    I was curious, with the experience you now have, would you say that this is a good set? Any brands in particular (I live in the Netherlands, as for electricity)?
    (I have also an AER compact 60 but also different effects.)
    - 36 AH battery (deep cycle) - Is that enough to handle a few effects?
    - Battery charger 12 V - 2.4amp charger.
    - Inverter - pure sine wave inverter (300W, peak power 600W)
    Thanks again!

    • @tomsoutheymusic
      @tomsoutheymusic  4 года назад +3

      Hey David!
      I've been using this setup for over 12 months and it's always worked great.
      I've had no problem powering multiple FX pedals alongside the Compact 60.
      I'm not sure exactly which brand of Inverter is best. Mine doesn't have an obvious manufacturer.
      I'd just check the output on the inverter, and try to match it with the mains electricity in the Netherlands. (Here is 240v 50hz usually)
      The battery size at 36AH is more than sufficient, gives some extra room. I never run out of power :)
      A similar setup should do you fine!
      Hope that helps mate!
      All the best!

    TOMSOUTHEYMUSIC, Your charger is at what AMPS, some AMPS are at 4amps and others are at 10amps. The charger that outputs only 4 amps I'm guessing would take hours to charge a 12volt battery?

    • @tomsoutheymusic
      @tomsoutheymusic  5 лет назад +2

      Hey Bill! My charger there is only about 3amps.
      As a rough estimate, take the AH rating of your battery. Say its 36AH and you have a 3 amp charger. 36/3 = 12 hours charge time from zero. (theoretically)
      Keep in mind, its best to not discharge deep cycle batteries below 50% charge.
      AND
      It's safer to charge batteries at a lower Amp rating for the health & longevity of the battery.
      Trickle chargers (low Amps maybe 1 or 2amp chargers) are very slow as they 'trickle' the charge into the battery. But they can be left on for weeks without damage to the battery, they're often beneficial.

      With proper care, I believe deep cycle batteries can last up to 6 years.
      Discharging these batteries below 50% capacity isn't great for their lifespans, so If you want it to last longer try keep it above 50%.
