  • Today's Review is on the "New Updated Version" of the "Convoy C8" from GearBest where I picked it up for under $15. This version has the new spring tail cap, integrated head and memory on ALL modes including Strobe and SOS. This is a fantastic budget light with some serious Throw for what it is and what it costs! By far it's the best Throw per dollar light that I have tested yet! It sports the Cree XM-L2 U2 1A LED Emitter and a nice deep (for its size) smooth polished reflector! I Highly Recommend this Convoy C8 it's a great light with a good finish, Memory, smooth strong threads and a great LED!

    I got one of these in 2020, I guess Convoy could still be making these! I can see why the design has remained popular, the reflector is large enough to achieve good throw from an LED yet the overall size is compact.
    I wonder when and where the design originated, if they're originally from the incandescent era.

      I'm not quite sure but I do know they are very easy to mod as I have done 100+ builds for customers with the C8 as a single led and as a triple led setup. The triple setup is a bit more time consuming but well worth it.

    Ordered mine. Got lucky the first time I ordered it, despite the flimsy packaging, I received the item unscathed but not as lucky with my second order. The lens was chipped and some signs of dings on the body but without visible scratches probably due to the great anodizing of the light.

    A good review. The Convoy C8 is about twice the price of the Ultrafire etc generic versions of the C8, but it's well worth the extra and it's still not dear. I've had an Ultrafire C8 - at least it had that written on it.
    The Convoy C8 has the Cree LED they say it has, not some cheap substitute, it has better heat sinking, it has a decent driver which doesn't forget the last mode and it has good quality anodizing. Some of the cheapies have plastic reflectors.
    The Convoy C8 also has a heavy duty, square cut, anodized thread on the tail cap. The cheapies tend to have fine unanodized threads which wear easily and can be cross threaded.
    If you don't need the throw of the C8 there are other Convoy flashlights such as the M1, which are just as well made as the C8 and a bit easier to fit in the pocket.

      +fred smith not to mention the tail spring is higher quality on the C4 as well.

      And you can program them for 3 or 5 modes so you don't have to cycle through strobe and SOS, which I have no need for. And they have a decent quality switch - on the cheapies the switch often makes a poor contact and flickers.
      If you want a C8 type flashlight, the Convoy is remarkably good value for money. They deserve to be more popular.
      The L2, which I have, is a beast of a thing with more throw and higher output than the C8, and with two 26650s it has tremendous endurance. It is big though.
      The one I usually pick up is the Convoy M1, which I find has a better combination of throw and flood for general use and is an easy fit in a pocket.
      The three Convoy lights I have seem to be incredibly well made and thought out, especially for the money.

    Guess it didn't come with a battery or anything? Or am i missing something?

    Protected battery has a higher resistance so its less powerfull
    I also have those 3600 ultafire and they only hold about 700/800 mah
    Recenly bought some lg hg2 3000mah 20a discharge and it holds it advertised 3000 it charged to like 2930mah
    I checked the mah with my XTAR VC2

      bram m you are correct on the protected cells and you are also 100% correct on the ultrafire batteries I the output on them yesterday on a charger that I'm reviewing and they only came out to 620mah lol which shows that they are probably holding a cheap 14500 battery or something similar inside that is probably packed with sand around it. DO NOT BUY THEM!! LOL

    I really wish Convoy made a nice flashlight with aspheric mag or basically any TIR optic. You can mod the S+ of course but I'd love to see something with good throw yet as compact as the S series out of the box

    • @luxlumen4605
      @luxlumen4605  6 лет назад

      Bartosz Olszewski I'm thinking of building an S2+ with the Oslon Black Led with a smooth reflector it should throw pretty well for the size of the reflector.

    • @tennicktenstyl
      @tennicktenstyl 6 лет назад +1

      Lux Lumen yeah but you can only go so far with a reflector, even if it's a smooth one. Plus I don't know about you, but in my opinion optic flashlights look so much better. Good luck by the way, I'll watch for updates.

    Which is better? Xpl hi or xm l2?

    • @luxlumen4605
      @luxlumen4605  5 лет назад

      Depends on what beam profile you like!
      Xpl Hi is a tighter center beam with light flood profile but it can reach out further than the XM-L2.
      The XM-L2 has a more wider center beam which can still reach out there pretty good and a brighter flood beam profile which I like!

      Coast makes some good headlamps, I have a personally a klien rechargeable headlamp that puts out 200lums and a browning that puts outs 875lums (browning runs off 18650 batts and the klien has a built in lith ion batt)
      Hell, even energizer makes a nice headlamp at 200lums has red led mode, high and low and you can dim the light in between to your liking.

    I think using an orange peel reflector will give you a tighter beam and better throw.

    • @luxlumen4605
      @luxlumen4605  7 лет назад +2

      ICUEᏉERᎽᏇHERE TM an OP reflector will actually do the opposite and decrease the throw while giving you more of a flood beam profile
