  • You already possess the tool you need to control your own happiness. Emma Seppälä explores the science behind harnessing your state of mind and how it can ultimately lead to success.
“Thank you for giving me my life back,” shared one veteran who was helped by Emma Seppälä, Ph.D., to overcome trauma during a study that used non-traditional ways to help veterans successfully cope with post-traumatic stress disorder. In her new book, The Happiness Track, Dr. Seppälä shares how to apply the science of happiness in one’s life in order to accelerate success (www.emmaseppala.com/book/). As it turns out, happiness is not as elusive as it once seemed. Using findings from cognitive psychology and neuroscience, Dr. Seppälä simplifies happiness so that anyone can enjoy it. As the Science Director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education, Dr. Seppälä is a “leading expert on health psychology, well-being, and resilience.” She’s a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review, Psychology Today and Scientific American Mind. She’s the founder and editor-in-chief of Fulfillment Daily, a news site dedicated to the science of happiness.

Thank you Emma. I'm way far from having experienced such violent traumas, but on my modest level, the continuous attention to my breath, being kind to what I feel is the best stuff I ever initiated in my life, 5 y. ago. Among some residual personal crappy behaviors, I am much less reactive and therefore somewhat more sociable and efficient.
    Whatever, being attentive feels great

Beautiful talk Emma, and great work. How awesome that these breathing techniques help ex-forces so much.
I found your name thanks to Max Strom :)
    Blissful breathing technique:
    1. Gently breathe in filling belly, then ribs, then upper chest. Feels like gently inflating a balloon. Brief pause.
    2. Gently breathe out, relaxing all tension. Feels like a deep full-body sigh.
    3. Pause after exhale, let sounds wash over you, relax until next gentle inhale.
Repeat as long as you want. Slow, comfortable, gentle.
Works best when lying down, relaxing into the floor. Also effective when you sit.
Experiment, find out what works for you. There are tons of videos on youtube about the benefits of breathing well. I can recommend some if you want.
I struggled with long-term hyper vigilance (from high crime rate area).
I'm amazed at how quickly and how well breathing correctly gets me into a blissful state.
I believe our distractible tech culture reinforces anxiety because the ping-pong short attention-span mimics state of high alert. Jumpy behaviour leads to jumpy breathing.
Breathing correctly sounds so simple ... and lame. But really, it's my main gateway to happiness & health.
Best soundtrack - if you need one - is the ebb and flow of gentle ocean waves.
    Free 100% natural Valium :)))))

The breathing techniques here are written the ancient text of hatha yoga pradiprika. Find a qualified teacher in yoga and they can help anyone learn these techniques. However, like any training all is not equal, ask the teacher if they know this text and have read it. Some western methods of yoga teacher training sadly do not cover breathing and philosophy they just teach asana (postures). In the uk, the British wheel of yoga does allocate a whole year (part time) training their teachers on breath techinques from basic to advanced. If you ask about this text and get a blank face then move on, all good teachers should own a copy and have lots of notes and scribbles in it like me! Find a good qualified teacher to help you. Good luck.
