One thing I'll add if you are going slab a home or partial are of that home you may want to consider lifting any existing structure off the property and lay new footings and do a complete pad covering both Ne and old structures because you will get some structural movement within the concrete as it settles over the years..
Thanks Shane for sharing your experiences. Your face is the reflect of what is going on in your Owner Builder series. It seems you are enjoying the process...for sure, from this side, we are enjoying it too. I really do. I can't wait for the next steps. Thanks again ... I send you patience, strenght and illumination for the rest of this journey and for what is coming on future ones.
It's been a while but I've caught up on all my recent videos to watch (super-cuts included!) and can settle back to the long term goal of watching every Uncle Knackers appearance :D Geez the lads did a great job!
Mate, the slab was a mission. Had to combat multiple days of heavy rain with time delays galore.....was a little frustrating to say the least but eventually got it done. The good news is that it's still there and the house hasn't fallen down.....yet 🤔😂
Nice, comprehensive video Shane. It's great to watch craftsman at work; making sure every step is correct, level, plumb and clean. Basic tools and many hands are still what is needed to pour concrete, but it sure is nice to have that laser level for added perfection. Ray Ellicot Concretors did an awesome job. Anxious to see the next video. Thanks again.
G'day Shane. Whooo Who That is a pour. Congrats to the team on that one. Things should go pretty fast from here. Can't wait for the next installment. Stay safe!!
Wow you`ve doubled the size of the place.........................looks like the word I had with the big fella upstairs worked.....you`ve had good weather....spot on buddy.
Thanks for sharing your build with us, mate. I want to build eventually, and whilst I'll never do it myself, it's invaluable to know what goes into the process so I can just be aware of it all. Cheers!
Brillo that Shane, those lads did a cracking job on them slabs. I could do with them to put a good slab down on my shed floor ha ha. It's getting there mate, looking forward to the next episode in this build. Take Care, Barry from England.
shaneconlan1 just dawned on me, it's the first time i've seen crusher dust used before the slab is poured. What's the difference is using this instead of the foam boxes that were used around my suburb when the new estate was being developed? Other than probably cheapness?
There's cheapness Andrew and also they're suitable for certain types of soil types. We've always used crusher dust. As the old saying goes 'if it aint broke…don't fix it' Cheers mate
I'm a bit behind on your project but just watched episode 28 and this one the other day. It is always amazing to see such progress and seems like you're taking it all in your stride unlike some owner builders! We have our own project coming up in a couple of months and hope it goes as smoothly as yours. I notice you went for a traditional steel reinforced slab with traditional footings all around the perimeter. I notice a lot of new places seem to use these waffle slabs with the polystyrene. Just wondering if you know what the pros and cons are of each and why you would choose one over the other. I assume you thought about it. Cheers Don
Awesome stuff Shane (as usual). I was just thinking though, surely in the year 2015 there's newer methods of creating concrete foundations that saves many spines and knees?
G’day CC..the slab all up was around the 28,000 mark which included the driveway and the house slab. The slab was about 170 square metres in size. The plumbing quote was all inclusive so let can’t exactly remember the breakdown for each part. In regard to the site set out.... if you never done it before, seek the assistance of a surveyor...best money you will ever spend. Good luck👍
PHEW! You had me going there Shane when said beer O'clock......but then you redeemed yourself at the end by putting the kettle on! ;-) good stuff fella! One thing, why the slab under the decking? Would have been cheaper to timber frame it? Or was there a specific reason?
***** G'day Richard. The reason for the slab under the decking boards is that if we were to go for a traditional stump and bearer scenario we would have to have excavated down a long way to get the required legal distance from the ground to the underside of the bearer. This would have created a 'pool' underneath out deck which l was trying to avoid. Being a sub tropical climate, we get a lot of rain in summer so l try and avoid any of those water related issues if l can. After that explanation…l think l need a good cup of tea LOL. Cheers mate.
you are way too funny sir, I hope your house comes out exactly the way you want with no issues or remorse.. youre a good bloke!!!
david onuszko Glad you liked it David. Cheers mate :-)

TheApothecaryAus Thanks mate. Yeah l know….. It's very labour intensive. Thanks for watching. Cheers :-)
Hi I was wondering if there was somewhere where you did a cost breakdown. Eg how big was the slab and a rough price and plumbers rough in etc
G’day CC..the slab all up was around the 28,000 mark which included the driveway and the house slab. The slab was about 170 square metres in size. The plumbing quote was all inclusive so let can’t exactly remember the breakdown for each part.

@@diyforknuckleheads thank you again for all your replies and being so forthright with the process it has helped heaps
That is a big slab. Do you still have space left in the garden for the BBQ, man cave, bar and other men's stuff?
alex maakt Na l sucked up a fair bit of the back yard. I was going to go double story to save space in the yard but it was just to costly. Cheers
I'll bet you get creative with the left over space. Good luck with the build.
alex maakt Cheers mate

Great video Shane! There always seems time for a cuppa, Is there anytime for a coldie?
Ryan A Ryan, there's always time for a coldie mate :-) I've got one in my hand right now. Cheers :-)
No green poli wrap around the plumbing 🧐
That was money spewing out of there. How much that run ya, Knacks?
Lolita's Garden A little bit, but it is money well spent :-) Two minute noodles for the next month or two :-)
