Several years ago I changed home courses to a much tougher course with water on 15 of 18 holes. Losing high dollar golf balls became too much. I started using my cheap winter golf balls, a Top Flight D2+ Feel. They were sold at Dick's and were often found on sale, 2 boxes of 15 for $30. I became used to the way they played and played well with them and had a number personal best rounds using them (76-79) on various courses. I often took some ribbing from other golfers. But scores are scores.
I think the benefit comes from consistency, as your scores improve, you learn how a particular ball behaves and thus how to play it on the course(s) you frequent. If you play frequently enough with various golf balls, pretty sure you'll find one that you prefer.

That's why it's a pain trying to work on your distances at the range. Even within the range balls you can see some that are not too bad and you get a half decent distance but then others look very old and are noticeably shorter. Suppose it's more about working on your swing and any changes to it rather than looking at distances on the range.

For any AussiesI recently came across Tour Bug balls. Urethane cover - good distance and good spin. $30 per dozen plus $5 flat postage in Australia. Not sure whether international postage would put them out of "range" for overseas buyers.

Was on the range today (Trackman system in place), hitting the srixon balls. Hit a few shots with some old balls out the bag too. Of the purest shots I hit and gauged distances from, using a 7 iron and hitting 5 range and 3 of mine, there was an average 12 yard difference. This would equate to approximately 1 club. Biggest difference was when hitting driver, same amount of each ball hit. Range ball averaged 200 carry and 209 total, whereas the better quality balls I hit carried 226 with total distance 238. Biggest thing I noticed with the range ball seems to be with longer clubs. Ball seems to drop quite quickly from about 180 yards, for me anyway but then I’m not an animal like Peter Finch! 😂🏌️‍♂️

I did a lot of ball testing this past winter on trackman and I also get better results from the higher compression balls. The previous model Z Star XV is a good option at $24.95 a dozen. The pro v1x is the best ball for me, and I play them on nicer courses, but the XV is a solid choice at half the price for the less well kempt courses, while not giving up much driver distance.

I'm a rank beginner. The pro I started with told me to buy the cheapest "soft" balls the store has. Right now I have MaxFli SoftFli. The balls I practice with in the back yard are all found balls. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for "soft" ones when I'm searching the rough, and start playing those. That'd be cheaper still.

Srixon Z-Star XV's are great balls. Picked up a dozen of them and a dozen of the regular Z-Stars to test between the two. For how I play, I like the XV's better. My misses are less extreme with them and I like the way they feel a bit better than the Z-Star. I haven't tested them directly with Pro V1's, but I don't think I'll ever get my game to a level where I think I need to play a $5 ball. For me, I'm very happy spending ~$2.50/ball for something that is high quality and actually has an impact on my game.

I buy Slazenger V300 balls @£20 for 48. I also use whatever I have found while searching for my ball. At my standard of golf the ball does not make a difference so it all comes down to price. The funny thing is I've played with some that will only use Pro V1s etc, but they play at my level! Equipment snobbery is alive and well.

I tend to take this approach, if the range ball is brand new (or close to it) add 5% to the results I see in ball speed/distance vs my gamer (which is typically the Callaway Supersoft). If the range ball is pretty worn, add 10%. The range I use (membership model, nice range) uses Pinnacle range balls and tends to cycle in new balls/throw out really worn ones every quarter - so it's probably better than most ranges. I'm not a long hitter BY ANY MEANS. So, if my drive goes 240 on the range....I can probably expect 250 on the course.

Precept PowerDrive here ... Price? A steal, actually. Several years ago, the local HD big box store had a shopping cart full of boxed dozen balls out right after Christmas... with a sign ... $5/dozen. I couldn't contain myself. Came home with 12 or 15 dozen at that price. I've never seen that since, and I look every year. So, I'm no golf ball snob, but that's pretty much all I play. I don't play random found balls. My backup ball is Kirkland 3-piece ... 16 HCP.

premium balls are made for golfers that are far beyond my level of play. The shape and change directions according to your swing. I found when I went to a "cheaper" ball, that I was actually able to lower my score because it was more forgiving and help give me the location I was aiming for.
