McCoy's last two seasons were so fun and inventive at times. While Rememberence and Fenric are really good, this is my favourite story of his era. It's just the right balance of camp, fun, clever writing and it has a great soundtrack and great performances from the leads as well and a superb villain's performance from the chief clown.
This is one of my favourite Who episodes EVER not just in McCoy's era. But I'd also throw Time and the Rani in there as far as great McCoy episodes go.
I'm surprised when people like Time and the Rani. In fact, I'm surprised when anyone likes the first season at all. Then again, Time & Rani aside, it was the 'experimental' season, so I guess it shouldn't be a surprise if people find one or two to be 'not as bad' as their reputation paints them. His later seasons, however, were brilliant by comparison. A few bad eggs but some exceptional stories (Remembrance and Fenric being the cream - special nod to Ghost Light for the complexity and drama).
RopeDrink, lol, it's ok, I know I'm the only person in the world who likes Time and the Rani hahaha. Look, I know everybody hates Mel, but she isn't the reason I like it. Basically, I love Kate O'Mara as the Rani, I love all the funny dialogue between her and the Doctor when she's pretending to be Mel, I like Urak, I like the music and I like the final scene with the giant talking brain counting down, it's all quite dramatic. So yeah, I have my reasons. But yeah I agree about Remembrance that's really good.
Ironically I don't actually hate Mel. Yes, she had absolutely no depth at all, but that's on the writers. She was constantly cheerful and bubbly, which would have worked well with the Darkest Doctor in Who history if they just explored her character, had them bounce off eachother and toned down the screaming. Still, I would have likely preferred Ace even if they had done that. Mel at least gets to appear in Big Finish episodes, so she's not 100% gone.
Given when you watch it a second time and know that its one Eldritch God telling another Eldritch god to shut up and eat their popcorn that isnt actually 'popcorn', it gets better.
different strokes for different doctors i say. tho most of them would take the offer like 7 does here, 12 as well as early 1, 3, 6, 9, 13 and maybe 10 i think would also refuse. just my own judgement of the characters of each incarnation :)

The behind the scenes of this story is quite impressive. The studio was found to have asbestos but John Nathan Turner was able to get tents up in the parking lot for the interior scenes, sparing this from being another Shada.
You see when I see how happy and cheerful 7 can be especially when he gets picked make the fact when he screams his last breathe on the operating table in the movie makes me almost start crying
I'm still terrified of clowns to this day....whenever I tell anyone they are like "Omg Pennywise from IT scared me to"....and I'm like....ummmm yeah compared to The Chief Clown from Dr Who, Pennywise is NOTHING!
Many people don't notice that the Ringmaster is also rhyming with the Doctor - not just the cheesy 'song'. Either way, this was one of the better stories of S25. Very fun, inventive, and surprisingly creepy. The fact it's a meta commentary about Doctor Who itself is just icing on the cake.
@@ShamrockParticleI believe he's a take on 'violence' in Doctor Who. He's primarily hostile throughout the entire story, making threats (etc), and even wows the Gods with his powerlifting. If only it wasn't his ONLY notable feature - he might have lasted longer.
Thing is, I've spoken to Stephen Wyatt, and he straight up denied there was anything meta about the storyline or the characters. He thinks it's basically a case of fans seeing patterns in things that aren't there. He conceded it was possible Cartmel added extra subtext in the script-editing. From what I can tell, most of this fan theory is based on one line "Oh, I know it's not as good as it used to be but I'm still terribly interested." which probably was Cartmel having a dig.
All by accident since an asbestos scare forced studio cleanup measures to be taken, prompting this story to be filmed in the car park. Taping had to stop every time a plane passed by overhead. And best of all, it's one of the best. I do feel bad for the ringmaster, though! 80s will be 80s. Plenty of stories from each decade have momentary screams of theirs too, hehe
Considering that in 2005, McCoy was the previous doctor (excluding McGann) Chris and RTD could've looked at previous doctors' behaviour and characteristics to make nine feel like those previous doctors (for the many classic who fans.)
i love the bleak and dead feeling this episode has. it's hopeless and dystopian, dry and sad. look at the captain, for instance. he's just clinging on to the desperate hope that he can keep on "letting others go first" without really having any way out of there.
Love it... the decade that began with the Sugar Hill Gang ended with a circus rap in Doctor Who! Sophie looks so cute here. Although, thinking of Mags, I thought she would have made a great companion. Except when the moon came out.
I'm glad to see you uploading more clips and vids than usual, but most of us were not at the San Diego Comic Con this past weekend, and so were not able to see the 50th Anniversary trailer. Just show us the trailer already, as likely someone has probably recorded it and is planning on leaking it. The sooner you show the rest of the public, the more power you take from the potential leakers.
All of the Seventh Doctor's era is underrated. This story criminally so. IMO Ian Reddington's Chief Clown is the best original enemy since Sil,and the best humanoid villain since Jek.
I agree although I hold Christopher Gables outstanding portrayal of Jek as my favourite EVER humanoid villain. The main focal point of course being his wonderful voice. Another favourite for that exact reason is The Valeyard.... Michael Jaystons voice is superb.
Yes, in fact, The Web of Fear is a story I'd very much like to see restored, as I have and have read the novel version. Moffat did many new things with the Great Intelligence to the point where he somewhat reinvented the character.
One of the best classic doctor who stories. I'd love to see the virgin new adventures being adapted for TV with a classic doctor who actor as the doctor. (Paul Mcgann or McCoy for example) it worked for the family of blood
Actually, I'm in the middle of reading the 8th Doctor Virgin New Adventures (haven't gotten to the 7th yet - yes I tend to read things backwards. Don't ask.) and I cannot tell you how many times I came across ideas in those novels that were stolen (yes stolen) for the New Who show. RTD and Moffatt both mined the New Adventure novels for the ideas they put on the New Who show. At least with Human Nature/Family of Blood they got one of the original writers (Paul Cornell) to do the screenplay. The ideas they stole are too many to list here. I wish they'd simply come up with their own ideas instead of stealing from someone else's work.
Been reading an up to date spin-off book and the author seems to have made use of the same word 'ragnoroc' which, is used for the three creatures, in this serial. Both writers seemed to have used the norse myth of ending and re-beginnings here when I looked it up. Could also be what inspired these as well.
