Great job Benhur! There needs to be a longer composition of Negusse for sure. A redacted version simply won't do. The longer poem should inspire more works. I would love to see the piano take a more mourning tone or go a bit more experimental, like Harry T Burley's version of Go Down Moses. You are a pioneer though that's for sure.
Thank you, Minab!! This rendition is short because it was performed with a limited recital time in mind, and composed in a series of four Eritrean songs. But we wanted to present the "essence" of the long epic poem/folk air into a synoptic art song. The song is also strophic, so I didn't consider the need to repeat stanzas. Moreover, we didn't seek to have much experimental arrangement and stay faithful to transcribing 1996 musical drama and the Eritrean traditional orchestra, for solo voice and piano. Sometimes the authentic sonic identity is better than opting for an avant-garde (perhaps the classical arrangement itself is experimental enough for this old tune). But, for future performances where there's ample concert time, I agree that you're right to suggest making it longer, and including more verses is helpful! (maybe an audience that understands Eritrean Tigrinya would appreciate it more)
