Spoiler... People don't realize in the begining he was thinking about commiting suicide... Then at the end he did everything in his power to stay alive even when he could have just given up... It's such a poetic contrast
He asked God to show him something, he did he gave him the will to live and to fight. He gave him hope. This movie is really deep and strong. One of the best for sure.
For years I’ve been reading the philosophical implications and underpinnings of this film. Not once did it cross my mind that it was a final answered prayer before a predestined fate. Most of these archetypes and concepts are found within Viktor Frankls logotherapy work. Such an amazing insight you have there.
@@hecg83 God doesn’t have nothing to do with it. You can take it that way if it feels more enjoyable to you but the film doesn’t have any religious theme, in fact it literally goes against that theme to show how his character doesn’t believe in anything. You are reading too much into it, with confirmation bias. The movie is all about the character of Liam. About heroic suffering without the will to live. His character didn’t gain the will to survive after praying to god, he had it from the very beginning. That’s what the first suicide scene was showing. What you are saying would make sense in a movie where the character has a development moment where instead of giving up he fights or if he was scared of meeting death and after praying his death was meaningful in someway, helping others or helping him come to terms with some issues. Nothing like that happens here.
@Blackhole I wish god never created an idiot like you.
wait is that what hendrick was talking about?
These wolves are insane...do they not realise they are dealing with a man with a particular set of skills!
ahhh
they are also fucking with the jedi who trained batman
Nice one! loved this movie...
They're messing with fucking Aslan! Who tries to mess with a fucking LION!
the alfa wiill be replaced
What people don't realize is that this isn't a survival movie, it's about finding a reason to continue on with life even though you're no longer interested in living it. There's a lot of really interesting nuances in the film, it's sad that it's so underrated.
It’s fitting that it is so underrated because the life of an individual is so easily disregarded…
sounds like a survival movie
If you trying to find a reason to live aren’t you essentially trying to survive?
Your statement contradicts itself lol
That makes no sense if you’re saying trying to find a reason to continue to live that means trying to survive
One of the best and most emotionally powerful ending of all time with a depressing and haunting soundtrack. This ending is overlooked by too many ignorant and heartless people just looking for a fucking wolf fighting. Highly underrated movie, one of Neeson's best.
I agree
Sniff.... beautifully put!
True. This scene is one of the most beautiful and concise explanations of what being a man is about that I've seen in a movie.
Glad Im not the only one. One of the best movies of our time, so sad only a few can appreciate this jewel
totally agree i mean so many people are just influenced by the mainstream movie concepts of action and big fights bla bla bla ... and this is just a perfect and beautiful ending for this amazing movie ._.
One of the greatest endings of all time.
Unfortunely very unseen and underrated:(
Then you should see "Ink"
For sure
true
Actually I was so emotionally affected that my eyes went wet ... Was in cinema.. light switches on. Everybody stares at me cause I look like at funerals. The scene touched me to the bones cause it’s very true: sometimes in your life you can encounter some stuff that makes you remind who you truly are, what you truly believe and what you’re ready to fight for. And you’re never prepared for that kind of stuff.
I didn't even know there was a cut scene after the credits lol
I love the fact how he knew he wasn't going to win but he wasn't going to go down without a fight
Wolf: Grrrrr TIME TO DIE- oh, you're just preparing? Take your time.
Life
There is an after credits scene where they are both wounded and dying next to each other, most likely the scene acknowledging a draw.
That’s what he was going do going out fighting as it should be
And for a character/person like Liam, THAT says a lot, too. Usually, Liam kicks everyone's ass, but here he knows he had finally met his ultimate match.
Its not about wolves at all. Its about life..
Stan 😐
@Mohamed Tamer look into the ideas of neitzche. I only learned about him today (I was introduced to this movie because of him, but he believed that pain brought meaning to life, and that a person that loves and accepts their fate (amor fati) leads a more fruitful life than someone who has had a happy life with no discontent.
To keep it simple, its about stoicism and how accepting your fate and running headfirst toward your problems and losing on your own terms is better than running away from them (ironically, he moved from germany to the swiss alps to get away from those he knew)
So you're right. Liam Neeson's character faces his suffering head-on. Even though his wife had died and he had no one to live for, he still fought to live. Whether he survived or not doesn't matter because of the way he faced his problems. A quote from Neitzche that you may know is "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" You could argue that if he did survive, then it would arguably be because of all of the things that he suffered through
Mohamed Tamer yes and our inevitable fate, do you choose to go out fighting?
Mohamed Tamer thanks you too!
@Mohamed Tamer The wolves symbolise our fears and problems that constantly stalk us throughout life. Either give up and die, or keep fighting 'til the very end.
One of the most powerful and inspiring movies ever. Great acting by Liam Neeson as always. And this end scene is just amazingly good, right into the feels. And those people who think that the wolves in this movie represented real wolves and this movie was about just some men fighting against wolves are wrong. The wolves are just a metaphor for your worst fears and biggest problems in your life, which keep attacking and stalking you throughout your life and you either give up and die or face your fears and fight till the end.
thank u
Brilliant observation
Thank you, you nailed it exactly I’ve tried explaining this to people when convincing them to see the movie! Every single human being is this movie!
That’s inspiring
Well said. Somebody got an A in English
The decision not to include a fight sequence is what elevates this from just a movie to cinema
Absolutely !!!!!!!!!!
Exactly. We had seen enough of what the wolves could do throughout the film. We knew the fight would be one to the death, the scene wasn’t about the fight itself but that there was even going to be a fight to begin with. The movie begins with a man ready to give up and die and ends with him deciding that he was going to fight to live despite the odds. Perfect ending.
I get the deeper meaning, but to me I wish they had put it in there cause this then it would've appealed to more people without detracting from the greatness of it either
@@mastereppsreturns6586 i disagree by showing the fight you take away from the scene sometimes less is more
@@mastereppsreturns6586 You're clearly not aware of the concept "Less is more."
this ending gets me every time. the music, the shot of his wife + drip, him reading out the quote, so many feels to handle!

+Adam Abdullah (Heisenberg) for real I almost teared up, I had to hold it in though, no other mover gave me more chill than this one
I think because he brings the actual pain to the screen. he had lost his wife suddenly in a ski accident a year or two before this movie.
If you liked "The Grey" check out "The Hunter" starring Willem Dafoe, another great movie that you would probably enjoy.
they marketed it as an action film. Totally ruined the whole thing and never got credit

Well I'd say a bear with nothing to lose is scarier than a man with nothing to lose.
Neeson's look when he smashes the bottles on the rock and puts up his hands to fight is more of an inspiration than any motivational speech I've ever heard. He's the human will to survive in the face of a brutal, indifferent world.
Built different
This scene deserves a quote from the ending of another Liam Neeson movie:
*MAGNIFICENT VALOR*
(The Man in the Iron Mask, 1998)
He looks like a wolf too !
@Klemheistor does it mean time to kill
It was awful nice of those wolves to give Mr. Neeson some time to reflect before they attacked.

yes yes yes!!!!!!!!! you get it!!! This is why it does not matter who wins the fight in the movie ending. Acknowledging the past to give him power to fight (perhaps one last time), is one single important human trait we all must equip ourselves at one point or another.
Neeson's acting in this last scene is just amazing.
His face, the shot of his eyes
He went from full sadness and sorrow to angery, bravery and concentration. All in a matter of seconds, incredible acting!!!
It was. What a great scene!!
It’s even more amazing when you consider the fact his wife died before they started making this movie and he channeled his grief into this performance.
I like to think that little growl at the end there was his, answering the wolf’s growls.
As someone who suffers deeply from depression this movie brought me to tears. I immediately understood the deeper meaning of the movie and what the wolves represented. It's more tragic to think of what Liam had/has been going through since his wife passed in 2009 when acting in this movie. When this movie came out I was very close to giving up. It's 2022 and I'm still around and fighting. Once more into the fray ..into the last good fight I'll ever know.. live and die on this day...live and die on this day...
Hey man can I kill myself? A happier life seems so far away in the distance. I can't anymore so much struggles, so much stress, don't know if I'm gonna get charged with tax evasion, don't know if I'm gonna end up with more debt. Everything is full with stress, I wish I had a normal 9-5 life
Keep going brother!!!
I'm right there with you. Love and die in this day...
Hang in there buddy, hope your doing well 🙏
Don’t stop brother keep going no matter what.
One of the most underrated movies of the last decade...
I don't think people should look at this as a realistic depiction on wolfs and nature in general. It's moreover a poetic view on what life is about. Even though you know what the end result of your life would be, you still have the opportunity to fight for your life as long as you have it.
The movie also proclaims that in many cases you don't fight for yourself only but also for the people around you. At the start of the movie is Liam Neeson's character suicidal because he doesn't think there's anything important to live for anymore. But after the crash he has this group of survivors to take care of and thus having obligations to keep himself alive for the sake of the others. One of the big drivers to keep yourself alive is your importance for others. If you don't feel important to others you don't feel obliged to live.
👍👍

.
One of the best survival movies ever made
+mike mikey especially because it's a survival movie in which nobody survives .
Bullcrap, it is the silliest depiction of a survival attempt (and of a lot of other things) I ever saw in my life.
Fuzzybeanerizer it’s not about surviving, the wolf aren’t the villains, the life is, the alpha wolf is a metaphor
This is about surviving depression/suicidal thoughts.
Surviving watching this stupid movie was the best survival experience I've ever had.
Whenever asked “what’s you’re favorite movie” it’s always The Grey. Well, Matilda and The Grey. Not many movies leave an everlasting impression on me, but the Grey is just a masterpiece. Hooked from the beginning, no idea where it might be going, people getting picked off one by one, the slow burn to the climax, the music and the poetry… it’s just so good, and so moving. In the end we’re left to wonder who walked away as the victor, I kind of like that. Of course he didn’t stand a chance, but that’s the beauty of this film. Somehow he went from wanting to die so he could be with her again, to fighting for her even though she’s dead.
This was the perfect way to end the film. The wolf pack represents the everyday struggles we as humans face and still we fight for the chance at another day and, even when we've lost everything, it is that continued fight that defines us as humans and individuals. I never expected Liam Neeson's character to survive and I like that it left the ending ambiguous. A film that was marketed as a brainless action film was actually an examination of the fallacies of mankind. I enjoyed it, despite its somber ending. The music hit just right and the line "Once more into the fray" is epic.
that was very sportsman-like of the the alpha wolf to allow Liam to get his weapons ready
Cristian Gonzales A lot of people might call it BS but I think one Alpha recognized the other Alpha and gave him an as much of an equal playing field as possible. Kinda bore out by the short scene after the cedits?

Makes sense. They knew of each other's presence from way earlier in the film and spent a good portion of it learning about one another.
rayraygunner yeah, it's still a badass ending nonetheless
Stuart Hull yeah /: wish there was more closure
I fucking love it! It was one alpha acknowledging another.
Just watched this movie again, this ending gets increasingly sad everytime. A guy who goes from depression to fighting for his life when he never wanted to live from the start. He grew to love and appreciate what he had at that time, helping the people around him. It was so sad when he was looking through their wallets and seeing their beautiful wives and children, and just appreciating what they had in live. Liam Neeson is such a good actor but this one sets the stone for me in showing sometimes you have to fight and appreciate the things you have. Your situation can be much worse ! Hope everyone has a great 2024 !
It wouldn't even matter if he killed the wolf. He was in the water right before that so he would freeze to death soon anyway. That's what made this scene so epic for me. He's going to die, still he decides to fight.
There's something very touching about the way he gently touches the wallets in this scene.
I love how the wolf gave him time to prepare for the fight. What a great scene and movie
It's almost as if the wolf respects him for getting this far and not giving up. When he smashes the bottles, it looks like the wolf is bowing
Symbolically, the wolf represented forces so powerful and inevitable that they do not require the element of surprise.
More literally, wolves are hunters that would approach a still target cautiously. It would have sized him up and approached very slowly until it was close enough to rip into him. If he ran, it would have chased him and bit him while running. Since he stayed still, it observed him for any vulnerability it could exploit.
After he's done preparing his weapons, he looks the wolf in the eye. Holding an aggressive dog's eye is a part of how you challenge it, so that could also be why things escalated so fast after he finished his preparations.

VERY VERY Underrated film. A story of a man ready to give it all up by his own hand and then by accident discovers that he would rather die fighting than to go quietly. Powerful message about fighting till the end, even when you know, death will give you the peace you could not find in life.

What a powerful movie. It has only grown fonder and fonder to me during all these years.
The Grey was never a movie about fighting actual wolves but your inner demons. In my mind everything after the plane crash is more or less metaphorical. Maybe they all actually died in the crash and are in limbo? Or Neeson's character imagines it all while grieving his wife.
But the important bit is that in the end Neeson's character finally finds his will to live, battle his demons and move forward. Very, very emotional and satisfying.
Now I’ve seen 1000s of films claiming to make you cry, this is one of only 3 I’ve ever seen that makes me cry everytime I watch it, it’s just magnificent and will resonate with me till my time comes. Thank you Liam and cast for portraying a very hard topic, death.

A lot of you seem to like our hero finding the courage to fight for his life regardless of being suicidal but to me personally I like the idea his mentality isn’t to survive here but to go down swinging and take the alpha with him because even if he won this fight there’s no way either the other wolves kill him or he bleeds out from his wounds and to me he knows that but still goes with the mentality of going down swinging and fighting till his last breath at least that’s what I get from the poem being recited here
To me it’s more so he was wanting to die since he lost his wife but he chose to live to remember her and the love he has for her. The reason that made him suicidal became the reason for him to want to live on
I saw this movie a few months before I deployed to Afghanistan back in 2012. I used to recite this poem to myself before missions. It was a good way to get myself into the required mindset.

I'd like to think he killed the alpha wolf, then the pack would acknowledge him as the more powerful animal and leave him alone. Wounded and exhausted, he hauls himself over to the alpha's body to lie against it, it's warmth a last comfort as he peacefully falls asleep for the last time, thinking of his wife.
Eerily enough your description is almost exactly what happens. There is a very brief scene I can't remember in which format deleted scene, extended or after the credits, but it shows Liam Nessons head rested against the alpha as they both draw 1 final breath.
like that ending Dane Kemp proposed, haven't seen the cut/deleted scenes but sounds like one of the best ending scenes amongst those like Gladiator and The Last Samurai
The ending alone, without the extended scene is a masterpiece in itself.
He kills the alpha, but the other wolves will attack him savagely, guided by the Alpha's son, Wilhelm
it was shown in the scene after the credits ... he kills off the alpha but an open ending is the best .

The poem is so valid for everyone. It gets me every time I read it. It has given me determination when I am struggling with something. It is a motto for life I will live by
Me too. It can be applied to most difficult life situations that we encounter.
same here.. keeps me going through my toughest times
What a masterpiece. I loved this movie since the very beginning. Liam Neeson is simply amazing.
Criminally underrated film. Absolutely brilliant.
Liam Neeson is the alpha. He can tame an entire pack of wolves then teach them to sit, rollover, and go fetch his slippers. He can turn a wolf den into a Crufts dog show. The wolves obviously didn't get the memo about who they were messing with.
+manny _ exe and Chuck Norris can tame a t rex
manny _ exe but john cena can tame the inevitable...
I remember first seeing this when it came out in theatres. Small minded ppl we're booing and pissing on the film because of the ending. I saw a master piece that stuck with me until the end, when I die I will hear into the fray once more and die in that day. Take care everyone!
One of the saddest and most beautifully poignant endings to a film ever. Liam Neeson is fantastic. So sad gets me every single time I see it. The soundtrack is haunting.
