Bad doors are known as Norman doors. Doors with handles that have a push sign for example. Doors are pure evil.
Don Norman is an amazing man who has paved the way in User Experience design. User experience design or UX for short is a design that centers around the person and the interactions they would expect or take within a process.

*Scan:* Take a moment and a deep breath, roll your eyes all over the door area and a marginal area around it, if it's a glass door, take a look through it as well. Scan for every little helpful detail you can find.
*Calculate:* Use all the information about everything you scanned and work out an action plan so smooth that you don't end up looking stupid.

I used to install security for businesses including strip locks and magnetic locks to doors. These bad boys will ruin your day since 9 times out of 10 you can't see them and get confused how a door with no lock is so hard to open.
There is a 24 hour gym that wanted to install a stronger magnetic locking system with a card reader to the side (the old one was too weak and could be easily forced open without a card). This is an upgrade feature to an already existing 24 hour gym. So the first night after the equipment were installed a beef head tried to enter the gym. Could not. So he pulled harder. Nothing. Then he used his full weight and pulled as hard as he could. He bent the metal door, breaking the glass in the process. All this was captured on CCTV. But hey, at least the magnetic lock held out.

pushing the door wouldn’t have saved you from the zombies though. they would’ve just ran into it and now you’re stuck inside.
But yes, outside doors of public buildings or building accessed by the general public should ALWAYS be pull to enter.
This is a safety thing since it’s supposed to also be an escape route and those should be easily opened even if there’s a mass panic and people storm towards the door.
Imagine a fire in a building. People are panicking and wanting to escape so they run towards the door but can’t get out, since the person in front is unable to pull open the door because of the mass of people pushing him into the door.
Iirc this is actually inside german building code.

Actually the thing with doors is they have to open in the path towards an exit. All outside doors should open towards the outside. Any door connected to the lobby has to open into it and so on. Reason why is in an emergency you can bolt through the whole building without a door stopping you. It's a safety concern. It's normal to pull every door while entering, and pushing while leaving.

There are dozens of developer jokes about doors, manifestos about doors, design documents dedicated to doors...
It's easy to forget how bad it can get when you see things like Skyrim - where doors are usually loading screens, or like Minecraft, but a lot of games have tougher times dealing with doors. A good example of a game which clearly struggles with those would be Of Guards & Thieves: door physics aren't network-synced so it's easy to die in PvP becose of those.

It's funny how often I have had similar thoughts to this at work. To enter my office I first go through a revolving door, then immediately I am met by a door with a reverse L shaped bar on it on one side and a straight vertical bar on the other side, guess which one you have to push and which one you have to pull. Then, once I go up the elevator to the floor I work on, I have to go through another door with a handle on both sides and it is also one of those clear doors, so I have to try to remember every time which way it goes based on the direction I am coming from, and of course I have to go through all of this again on my way back out.

I remember one time a door i had to go through had a round, door knobbed shaped apparatus for the door handle and i thought "right, this is clearly a door knob, i should twist this to open". Of course the knob didn't turn so i turned it the other way, still doesn't work. One of my friends, giggling away, then comes up behind me and simply pushes the door as if it was the most obvious thing to do. I then realised, this door know was designed to make the users of the door, look like knobs instead. Which it had successfully done.

Simple Tip (at least for North americans): Most commerical places SHOULD have outwards opening doors for safety (you dont want a mob of people crushing up against an inwards swinging door in a panic).
One thing I hate about doors that isn't always conveyed is how HARD you have to push or pull, I hate doors that look like they should be simple to open but with typical effort they seem locked or jammed when really you just need to give it a good push or pull (the doors at my welfare office are like this making me think half the time they're locked and thus closed)

Me and my mate were a couple of bottles of Prosecco deep and couldn’t figure out how to get into a Nisa. It was all glass we couldn’t be blamed. Tried pushing a few windows. In the end we just waited outside for a few minutes until someone else went in and followed hot on their heels.

Been in the exact same situation man. It's intentional, I'm telling you. Doors ALWAYS open outside towards the exit out of the building or room, but whenever there is a door in a very public area with lots of people, the door opens INSIDE.
I'm not crazy I swear. Once they even locked the other door and had me banging my head in it while another person just went inside from the door right next to me. This is intentional hostile architecture. Whenever I see a door designer or door architect, I'll be keeping my distance. You never know what kinds of microchips they want to attach in your clothes so they can further sabotage your fragile self-esteem.
Great content. Can't wait for you to become an A tier narrator and storyteller youtuber.

A pull open door... when I was in 5th grade, a kid went to the bathroom. When he came back, he opened the door about 6 inches, and somehow hit himself hard in the head with the door he was opening. Most hilarious door opening episode I've ever seen.

  • @ruicoco

"intuitively pull the door" everytime you said this i was shouting "push" i will never pull a door it's always brute force my way in

  • @medea27

There are two reasons for having a handle on the 'push' side of a door... firstly, to be able to pull & hold the door shut while you lock it (and stop all those zombies joining you on the other side). Also reduces the likelihood of snapping the key off in the lock as it becomes a default handle otherwise. Secondly, to indicate the difference between a fixed glass panel/window & the door (and minimise the number of not-yet-zombified humans who try to enter/exit via the glass _next_ to the actual door).

There seriously needs to be some standardization like vertical handles for pull and horizonal for push. That'd make the world a better place surely.

I had one of these doors when I started my job..had handles and even said pull..but you had to press a button 10 ft away so I took 40 seconds pulling and pushing the door and looking at the hinges while everyone in the office was dead😅

  • @4dvntr

I mean, the clearest signal you could get from a door is a written word on it. Push and Pull. Most doors have these. And even if not, usually the normal response to a door not moving when pulled is to immediately try pushing it. The door is manufactured in a standart way, way before it is decided which way you'll have to open it once installed.

The fearsome push doors with pull handles are the reason I open doors with a soft and quick pull and push. One of those will work. Or I'll look dumb a moment later, doing it again harder to make sure that wasn't the problem.

  • @Snazzydaps
    @Snazzydaps 2 года назад

The C method is how I open doors, if there's a handle, grab it, push, then pull toward the hinge, then finally pull towards you, all in one motion. That way, you knock out all three ways it could open, however.. this does not count for the elusive upward opening door, for that refer to the, "I'm not sure what brought me to this point in life" method.

For obvious security reasons in most countries, to go out of a room or building you always need to push (hence to enter you always need to pull).

  • @medea27

I had the evillest of all doors at work - _glass revolving doors with an automatic brake_ if someone tried to push them to make it rotate faster. So you would enter the already revolving system in good faith... take a step or two forward as you followed the doors around... and then the panel in front of you would suddenly stop dead. No warning, no alarm... and the end result was _always_ that you'd walk face-first into the door. You could always tell the staff who'd been stung by it before because they would use the standard hinged doors either side of it, even if the revolving door would be faster.

This problem stems from the fact that a lot of modern UX designers are obsessed with not doing any work at all, as a result they modularize and standardize everything in a way that is only convenient to them since only they understand, they don't think about the user, they only think about making their job easier and lazier.

Doors here in Sweden "always" opens outward so when going into a building you pull and when going outside you push. That is the standard here and I believe in most of the world outside of the Anglo sphere. You still live as you have servants and you doors open inwards which is dumb. A challenge to all American cops who kick the doors in, try that here in Sweden and see how good that goes for you!

On my Workplace is a onway revolving door the one who looks like Metall Pipes, and the other side is blocked by a Metal Wall with cutout holes for them so everyone will see that he can only push through the side witout the Metal wall. You don't will know how many people every day get stuck between Metal wall and Pipes because they pull and walk in the Wall Direction . I have no hope for the Future
