There is this rather embarrassing one in Hollow Knight.
Early in the game you meet this guy named Tiso who is searching for The Colosseum of Fools, a place where mightiest warriors cross their blades. You meet him several more times as you explore, each time he boasts and shows disdain for the world around him, and your final meeting takes place when you finally find that Colosseum.
You enter it and meet him in a break room, him boasting and all that. You go to fight and when you come back he is gone. You can later find his corpse in a deep chasm beneath the Colosseum. He tried his hand at fighting there and was immediately killed and thrown out.
The humiliation continues however. You see, one of the DLCs for the game released a location where you fight nothing but bosses. You can fight them in individual or you can fight them as a Boss Rush in Pantheons. And in one of those Pantheons you meet Tiso again, he brandishes his weapons and just when you think you'll finally get to fight him... he is jumped on and killed by the actual boss.
Poor Poor Tiso, he now exists as nothing more than something for another boss to casually kill before he faces you.

I’m not even that much of a Star Fox fan, but even I still thought that was kinda cheap. At least in Mega Man, where you always know that Dr. Wily (classic series) or Sigma (X series), having the same main bad guy in each game is kinda funny because it’s become somewhat repetitive, basically becoming a running gag, and you can see signs that it will happen in some respect (except X6; while I like the reborn Sigma as a frail zombie-like being, it was kinda unnecessary and shoehorned in and definitely not predictable outside the fact that Capcom apparently can’t make a Mega Man X game where Sigma _isn’t_ the final or penultimate boss). Same with Dr. Eggman being betrayed by his creations and/or betraying Sonic & co. once the current threat is dealt with. And at least, outside of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, each classic Mega Man, Mega Man X, or Sonic game (for the most part) _feels_ like a game made for and part of their respective franchises even if you were to change the characters in them.
      With Andross, though…
Like, of the 8 games in the Star Fox franchise (not counting the spin-off with security cameras or ports for Virtual Console, NSO, or mini consoles but including the originally cancelled and until-recently-unreleased Star Fox 2 as well as the 3DS remake), four of them (the original, Star Fox 64, Star Fox 64 3D, and Star Fox Zero) all tell essentially the exact same story with minor differences (and not even in a “the plot of this game follows the same general trends as this other game in the series” kind of way but in the sense that it’s literally the same story being told slightly differently (if not exactly the same), not even taking place in a different time), and two of them are essentially the only ones (outside of Star Fox 2) to receive remakes and ports at all (because apparently remaking or porting any GameCube games-aside from Pikmin 1&2 for the Wii, Metroid Prime 1&2 for the Wii, Mario Power Tennis for the Wii, that one Donkey Kong platformer with the DK Bongos for the Wii, two of the three GameCube Zelda games for the Wii U, the original Luigi’s Mansion for the 3DS, and Super Mario Sunshine for the Switch (as part of a limited release, which is ridiculous)-is just too much for Nintendo to be capable of, but not remaking or porting NES, SNES, or N64 games for the umpteenth time). Star Fox 2 itself also had Andross as the main antagonist and final boss, too. The two that didn’t have Andross (Assault and Command) weren’t even being developed until after Star Fox Adventure was released, and one of them (Command) was really weird from a story perspective, though the other is actually really good. So that’s 6 out of 8 games that have Andross as the final boss, 4 of which are just the same story with some variations. On top of that, since Star Fox 2 wasn’t officially released at all until the SNES Mini was released and Assault, Command, 64 3D, and Zero weren’t even in development yet, when Star Fox Adventure was released, the only two Star Fox games that had been released previously were the original and Star Fox 64, and Star Fox 64 was itself basically just a remake of the first game. Star Fox Adventure was the first Star Fox game to be released that actually told of events beyond what happened in the first game. There was no reason for Andross to be the final boss.
And it was obviously shoehorned in to justify making it a Star Fox game. Like, outside occasional minor appearances from or references to Peppy, Slippy, Falco, and that one guy who’s the commander or whatever, the only things-in terms of plot, gameplay, or visuals-that made the game a Star Fox game prior to Andross’s sudden appearance was that you played most of the game as Fox and occasionally got to fly an Arwing at certain points. You didn’t even get to use Fox’s Blaster! Yes, I know it wasn’t originally a Star Fox game, but it’s just way too obvious that it’s really just a Star Fox game in name only. Throwing Andross in at the end only makes it even more painfully obvious that all the Star Fox elements were shoehorned in without any real care. There was no build-up, no hints that, even in hindsight, could lead one to see this coming or see it as a logical progression. And while that can be good for plot twists, it was too abrupt for its own good, and it also doesn’t work as fanservice because everything else about the game is so unlike Star Fox (not to mention that there were only two other games in the franchise at that point along with two appearances in Smash Bros., so there wasn’t much to pull from for fanservice to begin with and it was much too early to depend on such fanservice to critical aspects of the game like a plot twist for the final boss).
On top of that, you don’t even get a chance to face the antagonist every other part of the game was building up towards: General Scales. While that worked for Conker’s Bad Fur Day to some extent since that whole game was about subverting expectations and parodying 3D platformers and mascot platformers (and it led to a pretty neat movie reference, which is something else that game loves to do), Star Fox Adventures takes itself too seriously for that to really work. Maybe if you had a previous fight with him before or he changed sides when Andross betrayed him and helped you out, maybe it could have worked better than it did, but as it stands, Andross’s appearance just makes you frustrated that you never got to fight General Scales at all after all that build-up. It was super anticlimactic, and the payoff was not at all worth it.
And the mechanics of the boss fight was using the Arwing. Y’know, that gameplay style that rarely got used earlier in the game? Yeah, you have to use it for the entirety of the final boss battle. Rather than making it feel more like a Star Fox game, it only makes it even more apparent how tacked-on all the Star Fox elements were.

@@dinoshotgun The way they made it sound in BL3 was like the Destroyer from the first game was basically just its little toe sticking out, which would've explained why it was a bullet sponge (it was to big to fit through and actually do anything). So I was expecting the actual Destroyer to be essentially the ultimate raidboss (like Crawmarax + Terramophous + Vermivorous + Haderax) and for Tyreen to meet her end similar to Steele, instead we got imo one of the stupidest bosses that felt like it was supposed to have QTEs.
They could've done like with Son of Crawmerax and fight him for the story then any rematches are against his raid boss version.
Also did they ever explain why that first vault apparently led directly to the Destroyer? It kinda defeats the point of the elaborate system turning Pandora into a giant vault if they're going put in an easily opened side door too.

@@AZ-rl7pg that somehow makes the destroyer from BL1 and BL3 even lamer then I already thought. We fight it’s stupid toe in the first game then get to fight a lame invisibility phase boss in the next. It’s like I always said, BL2 and TPS are the superior borderlands games (as long as you don’t get ultimate vault hunter mode, god that mode sucked, and OP is even worse)

So is no one going to talk about how the destroyer looks like a giant vagina lmao

I think that human face WAS it's actual face and at the start of the boss fight you are just attacking the snapping turtle's "snapping turtle".

To go back to FFXIII for a bit, what about Jihl Nabaat? The lady we were itching to smack around so hard before we were denied it, she came back as a bonus boss in the sequel?

After being chased by Chris Walker for the entirety of Outlast, he instantly gets killed by the Walrider when Chris finally catches you in the final area of the game

Am I the only one disappointed that they no longer highlight a comment and commenter as a prelude to each entry?

I was not ready for the Dragon Quest example. That was hilarious.

I recently played through Borderlands 1 again and I forgot just how annoying that final boss is to fight. So many of his slam attacks just knock you around (or off) the arena

DQ6’s bonus fight and well… that, is by far one of the funniest things in the series
