I have the LL Bean upland vest I like very much. I don’t run a dog so I don’t need a lot of extras to carry. I try to keep things simple. This year for Quail, I tried Mission Mercantile White wing waxed lined bags. I was very happy with them. I added a water bottle holder to the belt. Extremely comfortable for Quail hunting.
I've never seen one. I did a quick search on that vest and I see they have a 2.0 version. It looks like there isn't much to the vest in the area of storage, but it's hard to see in the photos provided. The water bottle pockets look pretty short as well. What is your favorite feature on that vest?
I recall trying on the Bird N Lite at a show, it wears more like a strap vest, whereas the Orvis vests wear more like backpacks -- though that was definitely version 1.0 .... and my other thought was storage, as you mentioned, and the possibility you couldn't slide birds into the pouch without taking the vest off.
@@UltimateUpland I have had the original bird n lite for going on 11 years now. I got it when I got my pups 11 years ago. It has finally started to wear on me and I am on the hunt for something new. What I liked about it was the pockets were forward and out of the way and also the straps were flat to your body so did not affect anything when you shoulder your gun. It is more of a lower profile vest and thats kind of what im looking for. Ive looked at Q5 , Hunt Redi, Final Rise etc and they are all nice but I don't like the bulk and I don't like that the shell pockets and water holsters are seemingly "in my way" the way that I carry my gun while walking. By this I mean I usually carry my gun waist level across my body with my left hand holding the forearm and right around the stock with the stock toward my right hip. With this customizable vests the pockets impede me from carrying the gun how I am used to. I may try the Orvis Vests or the 2.0 of the bird n lite. I thank you guys for your in depth reviews of these Orvis vests. I really like the Pro BUT im concerned the thickness of the shoulder straps may be too much when shouldering a gun in a split second situation.
@@jasonmhanes1 I measured the strap and it's about 1/4" thick. When I first picked up this vest I was moving from a simple Filson strap vest and the shoulder straps on that were not padded at all and definitely thinner. It took me a few hunts to get that adjustment made in my head. Essentially I had to push the gun away a little further as I brought it up to mount. I also had to work on the buckle position for the chest strap. I had it positioned too high at first and that added to the mounting issue. I was a bit frustrated at first, but after working through the adjustments, which ended up putting me where I actually needed to be for comfort and weight distribution on that strap, I can now mount my shotgun with no issue. You also mentioned the pocket position. Honestly, the pockets are the ONLY issue I have on this vest, but not because they are too far forward. I think they would be well positioned for the concerns you voiced. My complaint is that you can't adjust the position on the belt. I'd actually like mine a little further forward. I hope that helps you in making your decision. Good luck in the field and be safe.
@@stevederr8244 I appreciate your response- I went ahead and ordered one just to see for myself because it intrigued me. IT does have a lot of good things about it like you mentioned. I love that you can adjust the pockets forward or backward on this vest- that is an awesome feature. It does fit me similar to the Bird N Lite vest and the straps are not too thick at all- they don't interfere with gun mounting at all !- I don't mind it but I do think I prefer the bird n lite vest over this, probably because thats what im used to. This Orvis vest has water bottle holders that I feel likee I could see myself losing my bottles in certain hunting situations. Here in PA I am up and down hills, through thick stuff and ducking and shifting all around, I could see water being lost out of those pockets. It does have a decent amount of storage for how light it is as well. I think my wife Is going to try it on as well. I ordered the Orvis Pro as well- now that is a great vest, but all pockets are fixed. Storage is awesome on it, its not too heavy, but man those straps are so padded there is no way I could hunt with it. I can see myself dropping bad words in the field as a bird goes up and my gun gets snagged up on it trying to get a shot. Id like to see that pro vest with movable pockets like you mentioned here and maybe some thinner straps. If I was just guiding and not shooting I would have kept the Pro Vest in the blink of an eye! thanks for your help !!
For the additional $30 the Pro would be my choice. So much more to the Pro than the LT in my opinion. Depending on your girth, the pockets are pretty well positioned.
I like it tons i just handled it at scheels its light my kind of vest

Yeah, it's a whole different game when you're carrying for dogs -- minimum of a gallon of water just for starters.
@@UltimateUpland my buddy has the dog. I offer to take some of his stuff to lighten his load.
I still think the Browning Bird N Lite strap vest is the best value out there.

Can you put game in without taking the vest off?
Yes, though the LT is definitely a smaller capacity than just the regular PRO.
yes
I am so torn I really like the pro, but the non-movable pockets are a deal breaker.

Is this vest made in China?
Didn't think it was China. Vietnam, Thailand.....can't remember.
