Let't talk a few pro's and con's to buying a used truck. Buying a $10,000 truck, cash in hand and have it paid for.
I think it's a good business model for an owner operator. In trucking, a paid off truck is a huge bonus to being successful :)

Cash trucks are great. Especially if you're hauling around in a local area. The best way to borrow money is not to borrow it at all.

I bought an old ass truck for $13k. I let 20% of what ever i NET automatically go into my maintenance account. Each load means each possible repair covered.
*update* now I have 35% of whatever I make, being put aside automatically without me seeing it. Nothing can touch me out here now. Can even buy a second truck if I need to.

You can buy a truck, rebuild the suspension, rebuild the engine, change air lines, and paint it for 30,000. If you buy it cheap enough, you can have a dang near brand new truck for pretty cheap. The difference is, if you send it to the shop, labor can be just as much as parts. You have to be mechanically inclinded

I'll do whatever mechanical work I can. Only not knowing how to do a particular repair or not having the right tools would make me take it to a shop. But RUclips has videos on how to fix most everything, so not knowing is only a few clicks away from knowing. But if I have to lift a transmission up into the frame or wrestle with brake drums, I'll pay someone who does that for their living.

@@km-yj5rb How much are you willing to pay and how mucb are you willing to drop in instant repairs?

    • @stevenredman1582
      @stevenredman1582 2 года назад

@@km-yj5rb Determine your budget first of all. Whatever you buy, if you need an inframe, budget at least $10,000 for that. If it costs less, better for you. A transmission could be $5,000 to $8,000 for a manual, who knows what an automatic would cost. But you can always call around and ask the various shops for a ballpark figure. If the transmission is going to be out of the truck, consider getting a new clutch at the same time. Brakes? That can vary, but I'd figure on $2,500 for all six. Tires will be about $450 bucks each if you are doing all 10. Those prices are what I'd expect to pay at an independent shop, double that if you go to the dealer. So knowing what various components will cost and having test driven the truck to get an idea of what will need fixing now and what will need fixing soon, how much do you want to spend in total to buy and have a road worthy truck? For me, I have a $30,000 budget. The truck I am looking at will cost $12,500 plus taxes. I'll have about $16,500 for immediate repairs after taxes and licensing. If the truck is already road worthy, I can start a maintenance fund to pay for the various expenses I mentioned, out of my earnings. Those items will need service sooner or later. Plan and budget for them. You will have other business expenses beyond buying a truck. If you aren't ready to buy, then work for someone and get more experience. As for those "rent-to-own" opportunities, I would STAY AWAY if they also get you your loads. Good luck.

I only buy cheap trucks $ 7000 to 15000. No brainer to me. New trucks have major problems and have to be taken to the dealer where you get ripped off. Most guys are too scared to go out on there own. Get your big boy pants on and do it. It’s easy and money is good. This year is slow I’ll admit. My best run last year I made $ 9300 for the week. That’s exceptional but I used to do $ 5-6000 no problem. I pull a Reefer by the way. Considering going to dry van with the new Eld it might suit better less waiting around at the dock. Don’t be scared of the DOT get going and be financially free. Good luck.

You can do well with a 15,000 truck if you have the mindset that it's a $25,000 truck and you can do some light repair yourself. Bring a mechanic and pay them well for their time. Know what needs fixing, what's good, and what can be kicked down the road apiece. Use this as a bargaining chip. Look at trucks in the $20-25000 range too. A clean truck that's ready to work for $25,000 is a better deal than a $15,000 truck that needs $10,000 of work and won't be road worth for a month.

In 2006 we bought a 1988 LTL 9000 Ford for 5,000 from an oil company with 200,000 miles. 350 Big Cam Cummins, and a 9 speed. Brought it home, changed the oil, all the filters and greased it. Fixed a few small things, I remember replacing the tail lights because they were cracked and the hinges on the driver's door. It was out working in 2 or 3 days after we drove it home. Even the tires and brakes were good enough to run them for a year or two before replacing them. We still have it and use it for pulling our RGN. The only major I remember is around 2010 the front differential went bad and we bought one from a salvage yard for somewhere around $1,000

My plan is to buy a 2007 or older Freightliner with a Detroit for about $15k cash. Then if I need to put another $25k into it no problem. This way I don’t have a truck payment. Yes then you have maintenance but I’m figuring about 25 cents a mile. Detroit’s and pre emissions are cheaper to repair, any shop can fix then and parts are ez to get. I would NEVER lease a truck and have a truck payment.

Love this video bro! I swear we share the same minds. Just brought a 1992 Freightliner FLD with a detroit 60 12.7 with 500k original miles $9500. I know it's an old truck but taken care of, older gentlemen had it sitting up and got sick but the second owner who I brought it from was currently running the truck. But I still want to do a few things to it for my comfort level and I'm mechanically incline to do most of the work myself. Like you said there's more than one way. I don't knock lease or truck payment s either. This is just the route for me, no def, dpf, and million sensors, and ELD. If I say screw a company or just want to take off I'm not enslaved to a weekly or monthly payment. Like you said at worse, you can part and scrap the truck out to regain your investment (my thinking when buying the truck). I Watch CAJ vids too. He's winning with the 15k flat top fld. I know this is long winded but enjoyed the video.

I think it takes pressure off to run. If you get a new one financed it can get repoed and you just blew all that money if something happens and you cant drive...if you pay cash and own it..if you lose your job or have something happen to where you cant drive it will still sit there. Also if your truck is undriveable you can always go back company...but preferably there should be a financial cushion to float atleast an overhaul if need be.

It's not just the repair costs it's the possible 700 - 1000 a day in lost revenue from the down time. I'm thinking about cashing a second truck and putting someone else in it ..... You can spend the money on payments or you can spend it on repairs+all the lost revenue during down time. When I buy trucks I find a truck 5 to 10 years old with very low miles. Takes some digging but they are out there. All the lost revenue during down time plus all the headaches are not worth the "supposed" savings of a cheap truck.

Down markets and really high fuel prices are a buyers market. Bought my 03 W900L 6NZ for $64,000. With fuel prices upwards of $5.00 a gallon. It had 253,000k on it. KW in Fresno gave me a 350k warranty on top of it. They were dying to sell trucks at that time. New 06 Classic XL's were going for $96,000 out the door in Texas. I bought the KW because it was close to home. And it was a KW. At the time I was running for a produce house in Dinuba Ca. The lady that booked loads for them also booked back hauls for us. One stop shopping. She took a flat rate of 5%. She to this day has a stable of 18 or so O/O's. I was running a I-40 lane from Dinuba Ca to Amarillo Tx. And back.

@@MakeCentsTrucking I really wouldn't do it now. The 6NZ, 60 series and N14's were the last motors that we're uber reliable. I'm okay with company driver status. My boss has the headache of these new trucks. I like the comfort and the better driver amenities they offer. But they don't run for sh*t. Particularly if you have to idle. And my boss is just getting rid of them every three years anyway. So we treat these trucks worse than hookers. Because he doesn't get any more trade in value with a APU.

That's just one thing to look at. You also have to add in the cost of start-up. You got to add the cost of taxes, which can be a couple of thousands of dollars, plus your 2290, IRP, and business license just to add a few. Got a buddy who bought a 10k truck that dropped 30k in the engine right after he bought it. One thing to look at is the fact that with a 10k truck, the cost of maintenance is always going to be there. As a good friend of mine told me, you are either going to have a payment or maintenance. You get one or the other. Be good, be blessed, and be safe brother.

But also buying a used truck can be a crapshoot I was just lucky to get a good truck for my first one for dirt cheap, second used one I spent $13000 on in the first 2 months in parts alone (Kenworth w900L)then got rid of it,3rd one has been ok so far but still spending quite abit on it(Peterbilt lol) but I still have my dirt cheap first truck that never breaks down for backup. Freightliners are usually rough but parts are dirt cheap and easy to find and they are a tough truck, id imagine international,Volvo, etc are the same, paccars are the most desirable for looks but parts are expensive and your usually workin on them steady when they get older......

That is the first year of the DPF smog system. They simply did not have that it worked out. Freightliner didn't start getting the bugs worked out until 2012 and none of the rest started to get it right until 2014 to 2015 at a minimum.
worst, 2008 and 2009 trucks are not allowed into California so the one thing you gain as an advantage with having a smog truck, the ability to go into California, is lost!
Sammy, in this category you have to stay out of Cali and older than 2008. Your also want a documented engine rebuild!

Nedo the car Guy nothing wrong with having a old truck over the road. I see lots of OLD trucks out here being ran 48 states. I have a 2007 truck It's more dependable than these newer trucks. I baby it and I have 35% of my earnings being put away into my maintenance account after every delivery
