"Through The Unknown Tashkurgan" unveils an unworldly world I discovered on the Pamir Plateau. At China's western frontier, in the eastern part of the Pamirs and on the "Roof of The World" is the Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang Province. Tashkurgan has a long history as a stop on the Silk Road. Tajiks reside in relative isolation in the snow capped Pamir mountain range of western China near the borders of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan. They live in harmony and intimacy born out of mutual trust and love.
In Tashkurgan, due to the cold weather, lack of nutrients and altitude sickness, I was ill half the time and was then unable to undertake the photographic mission.I have witnessed childbirth, tribal marriages, unforeseen sickness, snow storm, avalanche, gazing into the stars whilst bathing in mysterious hot-springs, discovered Saussurea - a rare and precious Chinese herb, saving the lives of endangered animals, being placed under gun points as a spy suspect, car accidents, punctured tires, spending chilly nights alone in road side warehouses in the midst of getting lost driving at the country's border - a woman's nightmare scenario for being raped, torn ligaments of my swollen ankles, and putting myself relentlessly into all kinds of joyful and stressful situation.
Contrary to being daunted, I came through much matured and is able to look at life in broader perspective. My soul being more tenacious. With kindness and purity at heart, I believe in the existence of the holy spirit. I believe I would always be rewarded with a positive outcome in the face of calamity...there is much to learn from the Chinese Buddha Xuanzang (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xuanzang), who took the journey to the wild west for the holy scripture and underwent 81 severe torment before attaining enlightenment! Remaining still like the mirror surface of a lake whilst waves are being created from all fronts, I will always follow the instinct of my inner callings.
I cannot stop the disappearance of the tribe, but I hope, in a small way, to capture a moment of them before they fade away. i think as human beings, what makes us happy is very different ,it depends on culture or races. What makes us sad and miserable is exactly what we share ,and that thing is basically the impossibility to touch with love and express it. That is one of the most painful things that every human being has experienced,as well as felling vulnerable to love. I am learning a lot about the Tajiks people’s culture. Having witnessed the complexity of the Tajik society and the people’s relationship to Islam, I have been writing piles of memoir on the incredible journey. Anthropologically, it is a rare insight into an undiscovered people. It shows a world that has almost never been seen before.
