  • Looking China is a short film series made by a group of young film directors from over 20 countries. They traveled to various places across China, making films and exploring Chinese culture with the help of students from local universities.
This episode is about a little girl named He Junting and the culture of her Xibe ethnic group.
The Xibe people live in Qapqal Autonomous county, Xinjiang. They have their own language which, however, is vanishing day by day.
This short film displays the life of this little girl: her school, her home, her friends and her family, as well as the preservation of the Xibe language and Xibe culture in her routines. Junting really likes her culture: the Xibe dances, Xibe songs and Xibe language. In this film, she represents the survival of the Xibe language.
Watch this film by Pedro Nishiyama, a young director from University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, to learn more about this ethnic group's culture.
Looking China is a short film series offering a glimpse of China through the lens of 20 foreign filmmakers. We will be sharing their stories in the coming days and weeks.

It's so wonderful to see more attention on the Xibe minority group (not just on the well-know minority groups)!!! I'm a Xibe myself and I've been trying to learn as much as I can about my culture since I was young. I'm still trying to learn the language but it's just so great to see videos like these for people to understand more about China and its diversity! THANK YOU!

@@scintillate3492 I beg to differ, Xibe is just another spelling of Xianbei or phonetically Sianbei. The name has largely remained the same despite the passage of time. Of course, I know Xibe is one of the Manchu tribes, that's common knowledge, no need for patronising. Also based on your logic England isn't named after the Anglo-saxons, just because England has an E not an A. Did it never occur to you that they were no spelling rules in those days, you don't have to be this rigid. In fact the name Xibe in the Xibe language does have an r sound at the end.

Gosh you really broaden your horizon. If you ever cared to study linguistics then you would have come across the language family called agglutinative language, of which Manchurian, Mongolian and Turkic all belong to. This means that Xibe and Turkic are all related, also the original homeland of the turkic tribes are in modern day Manchuria, and Mongolia, in the same historical range as the Xibe tribe before they were moved to Western China in the 18th century to serve as guardsmen by Qianlong. The historical Xibe tribe IS from Siberia, many of the Manchu tribes originated from Southern Siberia and moved further south with Nurhaci when he founded later Jin dynasty. I would sincerely suggest you read up on the history of the steppes, that would put you in a much better position to challenge people on history than you are now.

Hay drying, and making hay dolls. (FYI. I am of chinese descent.) I have an old guidebook about the British culture and events, written in Chinese. This is why I know. Cos I kept those books. @Ballin NoKap88 Many had claimed that Mandarin originated from the Manchu which is not true. Mandarin is descended from various dialects of Middle Chinese spoken in Northern China and existed since the Song Dynasty where the language is the predecessor form known as Old Mandarin. The word Mandarin is actually coined by the Portuguese from a Malay loanword, menteri, itself a loanword from Sanskrit, mantri which meant minister or official. In fact the archaic term for Mandarin China is Guanhua(官话/官話) (language of the officials). The Beijing accent is influenced and based on Manchu accent of Mandarin. One example is Australian accent English is based and influenced by Cockney English spoken by the urban poor of London. Therefore Mandarin is a Han Chinese language and it is definitely not similar to Manchu or Mongolian.

My believe is if China [Han] can do this.... China will be more vibrant and popular and greater than any other country in the world. If China can foresee and understand the beauty of why the creator made people [human] with diversity of skin colors, looks[feature], cultures and languages. China will take the opportunity of this beauty to promote the country to be much greater.

It is hard to keep a whole country together without a common language and writing. Obviously they chose Mandarin because most people in the country speak that language. It's up to the ethnic group to put effort in preserving it. No one is forcing anyone to rid their culture.
Anyone immigrating to a new country is expected to learn the country's language in order to survive there. Just like many who immigrated to the US and everyone in the world is expected to learn English. If you want to preserve your own, put in the effort if they care so much.

Yes I know about the Xibe people, I visited one village that was predominantly Xibe in Xinjiang. They are originally from North East China, they are Steppe people’s, similar to Manchurians. However when the Manchurians came into power they exiled or sent Xibo people to Xinjiang to defend the far Western corners of the Qing empire from invasion. The Xibe who were sent to Xinjiang remain their today, Xinjiang is the only place left in China where their language is written and spoken. In the North East where they originate the Xibe people there have already assimilated into mainstream Chinese society. Xibe are great archers I believe the only archers that have won medals for China in the Olympics for archery are Xibe ethnicity
