welcome back friends for another video - didn't forget you!🥳 Making a video to articulate controversial stuff takes time to think through and I don't just want to just speak from a predictably 'Chinese viewpoint'. let me know what you think of the video!
edit: to all muslim friends who reminded me to not have the Quran reading as background music - apologies! I wasn't aware of this and I just thought it sounds beautiful. I'll be mindful of that in future videos!

Does it matter if the first mosque had a dome or crescent? Prayer can be performed out in the open , but these domes n crescents did develop n sort of became part of Islamic culture n identity
Why is the majority Buddhist or confucinist are scared of these domes ,
It's a start that takes place from domes to dress code then to food , that's how you erase a culture religion n language but it's not gonna help China in general to take hold of Africa Asia n Middle East
People are already tired n sick of America n European
They want China n China wants them too but at home China is scare of similar looking Chinese who happens to be Muslims
What happened to Muslims in Yunnan ?
Read about it , they were hustling n bustling a beautiful city more patriotic n chinese than one can think of
They were destroyed to pieces in 24 hours
Forced to eat pork wear non Islamic clothing n more than 1600 killed 4000 houses destroyed cuz these peaceful Buddhist couldn't see them thrive rapidly.

You will find Muslims rushing at you advising or somehow you feel they are lecturing you.
I want to make it easy if it offends you or somehow looks strange for you.
Actually for Muslims Islam is the best thing happened to them even if they have less money or more money but life after death for Muslims is eternal life. Some strive very hard for it or some may not but by belief all of them want to be forgiven by Allah and ultimately enter into Paradise. They truly want to share this best thing with you so you can live a happy and eternal life after death and for us Muslims if we could become source of hadayah for anyone it will be benifit to us so that is the actual purpose behind so much excitation from Muslim Brothers and Sisters. I truly wish you a very happy life here and after death as well. ALLAH Kareem!

Still i will assume you are saying the truth about you living with muslims. But if your above statement about the so called "behaviour of Chinese government towards minorities" is true then i would like to listen your thoughts about the uyghur muslim minority in the east turkistan region, which China annexed and renamed it as xinxang province of its country.
Chinese policies towards minorities, oppress them, force them into producing goods for China, rip off their culture and religion, put them in concentration camps, force them into marrying Chinese family to make them forget about their religion by forcing them into Chinese culture, ban them from acquiring religious education, ban them from teaching quraan, ban them from wearing niqab and burkha and jilbab;in a leaked video they were literally cutting women clothes because they were too long, men were detained for praying and reading quraan, they were forced to drink alcohol during Ramadan and are also banned from fasting.
And don't come and say that these are lies because we have evidences of the abuse, leaked documents about the victims present in the camps, actual witnesses of the people who escaped the Chinese oppression.

Hi, I am from Indonesia, a country with most Muslim population in the world. In Indonesia, the early mosques also incorporate the original culture, the Hindu and traditional style. Due to this strategy, the population could easily accept Islam as a new faith because it didn't clashed frontally with their original culture. Only when Islam had become the major religion, the more Middle Eastern style was incorporated. And now, several new mosques even use modern and avant-garde style, leaving the ubiquitous dome shape.
Regarding the assimilation of religion, the history is a bit different in Indonesia, since Islam finally become the dominant religion. Even with the domination, Islam has evolve into a more "Indonesian" style, with its own unique culture and tradition. Only in the last decade there is a purification movement ignited by the new Islam awakening around the world.

Islam is a methodological system of life both individually, family, community and State.
Islam must be upheld in a comprehensive manner according to the capabilities of its adherents.

    Hi!
the whole "Islam says that doing Jihad will give you 72 virgins" tag line was a mischaracterization which was made popular by the USA in the Bush era by anti Muslim Warhawks as a form of propaganda to get the American public onboard with the invasions in the middle east.
Nothing that Islam teaches is harmful, I was with you throughout the entire video, but have to disagree on this tiny part, otherwise loving your work, and looking forward to more!
Most the things you may hear about Islam being bad or other, is usually gross misinterpretations or misunderstandings of scriptures, often made by non-muslims who wish to defame Islam ( mostly done by a wave of anti-muslim grifters who acted like "experts" on Islam and Islamic nations in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 to make money off the US govt.)
    ______________
    In Islam:
The Universe and the entirety of Cosmos was created by Allah,
the best description of Allah would be sura ikhlas.
    in regards to humans,
Allah then sent human messengers to the rest of humanity to convey rules and knowledge to humanity
more than 124000 prophets were sent throughout human history to all the various cultures and nations of earth,
    But
over time, the people tended to forget or lose chunks or heavily distort portions of the message/religion (Pure Monotheism, the 1st half of the shahada "la ilaha illallah")
this is why according to Muslim belief, all world religions and cultures mostly tend to have many similarities, when human morality never needed to evolve in the same way even in tribes geographically separated from each other.
the Last prophet was Muhamad s.a.w. who was sent with the Quran, and allah completed his preferred religion for all of earth's humans as stated in the Quran.
which means that Islam (the primordial religion of which the Quran is the final text) is now stuck in stone and hence cannot be changed nor altered.
As such one cannot claim that the religion is outdated, since although the rest of the world can change, the religion will be like an iron pillar, and unmovable rock, a firmament and foundation that the rest of the world has to conform to, than the other way around. or else the religion is hollow and malleable and means nothing.
I may have misunderstood you and when you said "outdated religious teachings" you probably meant to say "incorrect" or "misunderstood" religious teachings, since sure ppl can misunderstand or be given false information by powerful people, but calling a religious teaching of the religion itself outdated would be incorrect to say.
the Jihad thing you stated is a modern invention, Orthodox, and original / traditional Islam denounces that. Terrorists like Osama Bin Laden themselves admitted that they were breaking islamic rules due to political reasons. their justification for ignoring the rules of War as clearly stated in the quran ( you can' hurt noncombatants, old ppl, clergy or religious buildings of any religion, trees, animals, enemies suing for peace) were flawed and based on a cherrypicked and easily debunked and misguided obscure fatwa from some random cleric which didn't even properly apply.
SO, basically the terrorists today ( all those who evolved from the original US funded terrorist groups ) have 0 religious backing for their crimes.
    -------------------------------------
That said, Islam is global, and does infact teach about putting humanity as a whole first above nation state identities, much like communism which was intended to be a global movement for the betterment of all workers in every nation, tribe, class and creed.
I think China could adopt Islam into its communism to forge an expansionist ideology for promoting communism as a system and islam as its official religion ( with differing outwardly expressions [architecture, food, fashion] based on the people) to renew the project of spreading the upliftment of all classes of humanity as Marx & Lenin etc. originally hoped.
P.S. You don't have to be Hui to be Muslim, there are many Han Muslims too, anybody can be a Muslim.
    You can Too!
P.P.S Love you work! Looking forward to More!

@@kamekameha721 shariah law is the best law basically a law that has heavy punishment but is hard to apply. the problem is that ppl think oh if you steal you'll be punished by the amputation of the offender's right hand but most ppl only know . Of course you can't just give the punishment just because they're stealing. You need to know the reason why they're stealing whether they steal because of poverty or they steal because of their greediness (they steal some expensive stuff because they couldn't afford it while they have money is enough to buy the things they need) . So the person who steals because of poverty won't receive the punishment while the other person will receive it. That means the qadi(judge) have a heavy responsibility they need to know the reason why the person steals or whatever crime they did as detailed as possible because if they give the wrong punishment they'll be questioned by Allah whether they did their duties perfectly. There are a lot of misconceptions about shari'a law yeah it's true the adultery will be stoned to death but that for the married men and women while the unmarried will get lashes.
The Qur’an firmly forbids adultery in this verse: "Those who commit adultery, men or women, give each of them a hundred lashes" Qur'an 24: 2.
However as I said the qadi (judge) can't just give the punishment. It is therefore important to mention that in the first cases of accused women of adultery, the Qur’an issued a binding law that consists of "confining" women accused of adultery to their homes until further notice.
The verse says: "Those who commit unlawful sexual intercourse of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify, confine the guilty women to houses until death takes them or Allah ordains for them [another] way."(Qur’an 4:15). We can notice in this verse that the Qur'an primarily requires the testimony of four witnesses, which is certainly not likely to happen.
"Keeping" women in their homes can be considered a means of protecting them from becoming victims of popular opprobrium, which is in itself, a temporary means of avoiding abuses based on rigid mosaic legislations of that time.
The following verse marks the second phase in the Qur’anic reform: "And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses - lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient” ; Qur’an 24; 4.
Fyi One of the major sins in islam is to accuse an innocent woman of adultery.
It is even more important that the Qur’an requires providing irrefutable evidence of adultery.
This Qur'anic measure makes accusation extremely difficult, if not impossible. The proof of adultery requires the presence of four eyewitnesses who, according to the Muslim law, must have witnessed the sexual act and relate the same descriptions, which is virtually impossible.
The new measure remains extremely difficult to implement since it is conditioned by the testimony of four people of good faith to validate the accusation of adultery. The obligation to provide four eyewitnesses is a drastic measure, which makes proving the adulterous act very improbable. The Quran is very strict regarding false testimonies and punishes those who present false testimonies with the same penalty as that of adulterers: flogging along with the loss of all of their civil rights. It shows that its hard for the punishment to be implanted.
In Islam as long as the person already matures the way they think and alr hit
puberty, they consider as adults. I mean in the past there was no age set by the government like nowadays for example if you're 18 years you'll consider as an adult in my country or in most country, in new Zealand 20 years old and 19 in Korea . You do know that people in the past married as soon as they hit puberty so you can't make it the same how society works nowadays and in the past.
Among those going into marriage, the basic requirement in sharia law is that they must not only have completed puberty but also have the full maturity to recognise and be able to meet their rights and obligations in marriage .

Your commentary is very important for Muslims from other geographic locations to understand that Islam melds into the people/culture it joins, not that an "Arabized" culture should represent Islam as a faith or culture alone. I became Muslim in China through Hui Muslims, his family had been Muslim for more than 1350 years, while a language student at Beijing University over 40 years ago. When I spent time as a language student and expat in the Middle East a decade later, I am so glad I was introduced to Islam outside of the Middle East...an understanding of Islam that was more kind, inclusive, and inculcating a softness toward others from Far Eastern philosophies--and not flagellation from an "Islam is superior-ity" complex that is not obvious to many Muslims bound to traditional thinking. Just take a look at the knee-jerk reactions of most Muslims in traditional Muslim states...form over substance. As someone who have had a great fortune to visit some of the impressive mosques from Malaysia to Oman and as a practising Buddhist with freedom to practise my faith without fear in my home country Nepal, it is deeply concerning that these magnificent domes are being replaced with flattened tops.
Places of worships are underpinned by philosophies of the concerned religion. They inspire us to reflect and contemplate on scriptures.
For example, Arabic calligraphy is only used in the domes of mosques not on their walls or floors. The calligraphy symbolizes God's words and highest wisdom. In Buddhism, our temples often have flatten roof to symbolize one taste of samsara (world) and nirvana (liberation).
I am actually concerned that this kind of approach whilst well-meaning may actually be short sighted and unintentionally eroding Islamic values.

In the western world muslims clash with the values of many countries, in Switzerland there was a vote that stopped use of minarets especially with loudspeakers. In sweden there has been individuals burning copies of the Quoran and that has made sweden a legitimate target of terrorism. Some people here says that religion is the cause of all evil in the world.

I felt China had the right intention of weeding out extremism, but they executed it incorrectly just as you said. Without the direction of the Imams in those communities which would have helped the government greatly, they sort of created issues that didn't need to happen. I know that In Xinjiang a lot of those who came back from Syria were extremists and have those separatist values, which plays nicely into the USA's narrative. Which could have been the reason why the govt acted so quickly on the matter without proper education and planning themselves. After all, no one wants to live in a disestablished country. I felt more comfortable being a Muslim in China than in the USA. Muslim Chinese have always been a part of Chinese history, Arabic writing was on the Chinese yuan, I know it's mainly cashless now in China so I don't know if you can find an yuan but check it out. One of the first people to embrace and accept Islam was China. In fact China has some laws that are similar to Islamic law.
I also want to mention that the line about Jihad is incorrect, maybe you misunderstood. Jihad does not mean a holy war, it means to fight for oneself. So for example, to battle oneself in the pursuit for truth, or knowledge, for justice, or to become more strong in faith, or to strong in charity etc etc. Holy war is what extremists turned the word Jihad into made popular by their US funded leaders. Also 72 virgins are NOT mentioned in the Quran, it's only in a Hadith- which are 'stories' that were written by others 100's of years later. We take these books with a grain of salt. I personally do not really follow any Hadithes as the Quran is clear, no other text is to be followed.
I really enjoyed this video! I have to say I do feel like the Chinese govt doesn't like chaos, they still have that ying yang balance and to avoid chaos they make some mistakes like this. I do hope that the friendships with different Middle East countries and more conversation will help the govt to rectify the issues they have created from their poorly executed plans to stamp out extremism.

When reading from the Quran (or any religious scriptures) and stating that an early understanding / interoperation is somehow outdated and archaic does not logically make sense to me. Does it not make sense that the oldest / original understanding of the text would more reflect the true intention / original meaning ? Even more so, if one were to believe the words to be of divine origin or divinely influenced ? Surely "the word of God" does not change due to the passing of hundreds of years (very short time in the eyes of a supreme being) ? I would think you either believe it and follow it as is, or reject it. It's similar to modern Christians cherry picking texts and ignoring others to suit their "modern sensibilities".

Did I get offended? Not really, like why I should? the mosque is rebuilt and the purpose is still a mosque.
Heck, in Indonesia there is Demak Mosque in Central Java that resembles none of how mosque usually looks like (e.g. domes ) and it looks more like a traditional javanese architecture. Is it still a mosque? yes. do people pray there? yes
but then again, it is kinda hard for non Chinese citizen visitor to distinguish which building is a mosque or not if it meshes too well with other surroundings.
I think a specific marking should be there to point out to foreigner where is the mosque and which building is the mosque.

There is a need for one religion to be distinguished from another religion, otherwise, what is the point of having different names. Buddhism and Islam have theoretical and practical differences. So, why can’t these differences allowed to be manifested into each architectures? If walking into a traditional Chinese mosque, one cannot determine if it is a mosque or Buddhist temple, then I believe we have integrated to the point of not allowing each to practice their own religion freely.
Of course, Islam allows some degree into adaptation to local culture, but that doesn’t mean one has to give up its distinction. A true free society would allow distinction within its society, and let its people choose the path that they seems most logical or appealing. In long term, this is what makes a society resilient; allowing external influence as it can be a change for the positive.

Actually the dome was not originally Islamic. It was originally from the Christian churches during the Byzantine and Orthodox era. The muslims then took it as their own thereafter. Look at Haga Sophia church-turned-mosque in Turkey with the huge onion on it. Built in 537ad, that was there before the time of the Prophet Muhamad, born 570ad.
That explains why the oldest Chinese mosque in Guangzhou, which i already visited back in 2004, together with what was believed to be the resting place of the companion of the Prophet, Saad Bin Abi Waqqas, has taken the local chinese shape. Becoz at that time the early arab muslims who brought the religion to that southernmost province of China thru sea werent influenced by those onion shape churches of the Christians yet. Becoz Islam of the Prophet Muhammad's first generation of companions was still very new to any kind of specific shape or design. Only after a few generations when the Islamic conquests grew larger and wider esp during the 2nd century of the Hijrah calender or 7th century ad did they saw the onion shapes on Christian churches and decided to adopt it on their mosques.
(I am a Muslim from Malaysia and had studied in Egypt for 10 years... we still have a few old mosques in Malaysia of around 2 centuries old that took on local taste and design with no onion shaped roofs whatsoever. In fact it looked very much like a Chinese or Budhist temple design with sharp ends pointing up, with 3 layers of roofs and the only different with a Budhist temple was it was normally green in color. And this was the trend of most mosques in the whole of South East Asian region up until the onion shape came in during the second half of the 20th century. Pls google old mosque in Malaysia and Indonesia.)
Then the Islamic influence thru the Silk Road to China took place a few centuries later. The Arab and Persian Muslims then intermarried with local Chinese and the Hui people came to exist, who was originally a mixed of arabs persians and chinese but mostly Muslim in religion. Some of these arab persian muslims even served in the Mongol courts of Kublai Khan as ministers.
These muslims who came by land then introduced the onion shaped mosques in the central of China or along the Silk Road. This was already past 4 or 5 centuries after the first mosque in Guangzhou which had not yet brought any influence of the originally Christian onion shape. Becoz by then the onion was already prevalent in the Islamic world from Spain to India around 2nd century ad.
Btw, why i said that IT WAS BELIEVED to be the resting place of Saad bin Abi Waqqas was becoz there were 2 more claims of his resting place in the the middle east. And that that one in China actually belongs to his uncle.
To me personally as a Muslim, travelled far and beyond, i have no real affection for a specific shape of a mosque. The most important thing to me is that i love it when lots of people are inside praying or learning in it. Many old mosques in my country are already demolished to make way for modern style mosques with air-conditioned and all, something very much needed in a tropical country. Some maintain the good old roof shape and some just change it, by themselves, without any government intervention.

Instead of focusing on how 2 make these people more patriotic you are taking away their identity.

We in Pakistan believe China is the best country on earth being most peaceful n respectful in any regard n other Muslim countries think same as well , doing business with China along new projects trade invention n helping China make its currency dominance .

Its always a bit unsettling when people have to speak in cryptic language or hide their true feelings due to what they perceive the government might do to them in response if they were to speak plainly. It makes sense that a religion would be adapted to the local population, that happens everywhere around the world. But it is one thing for a religion to adapt itself to appeal to the shared values of the local population, it is a totally other thing for the government or some other entity to come in and decide what should happen with them. If the muslim community had come together and decided they wanted to renovate the mosque and do it in a more chinese style, fine. But for the government to enforce it on them seems harsh and cruel. It definitely does still seem like cultural erasure, and even the other mosques you visited seemed to be trying to pander to the government somewhat (was the patriotism sign there initially? Or was it placed there later as the government started looking more into religious minorities?).
Thanks again for presenting this insider view of the situation. It's always interesting to see other cultures in the world. I went to China in 2006 and found it very enjoyable and fascinating. There are differences in Western countries. France is more averse to public religious expression than other countries for instance. It sounds like in China the government has a role to play in deciding what is proper Chinese culture. In Australia we are suspicious if our government tries to do this - we tend to think they are setting some citizens as more worthy than others (which some of us don't like).

I feel that .. in the tense environment around this matter in china now (it might not be new at all but just more dissucssed lately ) the destruction of the green dome meant a lot to the Muslims . Im not even chinese but I was kinda sad that happened ! Regradless the intentions at that point ( even if they were to be good ) , seeing something so central for your identity getting demolished right in front of your eyes in a mood of general upset from all sides must be horrible . I get it . Islam is a religion - its not an architectural style . But in a way , this unique union of so-called "islamic style " (its just arabic style really ) and chinese culture , I find , to be absolutely mesmerising ... I would love to taste local halal chinese cuisine and get a feel for the internal culture of these people- how they talk and how they pray to Allah (God ) in a non-arabic tongue ! I feel that Muslim chinese culture is super unique and in a way only adds to the richness of china ... that doesn't mean that making the architecture of mosques more chinese renders the Islam of those chinese Muslims lost- but ... it would be a sad thing , no ? Thats my humble opinion and Allah (God) knows best . I would love to see more videos about this topic - keep'em coming !

Even uneducated farmers can understand this in the Quran. Also, The Arabic word 'Islam' simply means 'submission' to one god Allah, and derives from a word meaning 'peace'. I am afraid a point is being missed. Shouldn't Muslims decide how their mosques look rather than a secular government? Mark Twain once wrote that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. i believe he meant fake patriotism. Why would a secular government require religious compounds to post slogans about patriotism on a church? Does a religion have the need to post religious slogans on government buildings? Shouldn't there be a separation between church and state? Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's? And - you did not mention the plight of the Uighur people. The CCP seems troubled by the various peoples of China. Does it really want all Chinese to be Han Chinese? Mao was Han Chinese. Deng Xiaoping was Han Chinese. Xi Jinping is Han Chinese. Have all the CCP premiers been Han Chinese men? Isn't Mandarin Chinese actually the native language of the Han people? America, Australia, New Zealand, and many other nation-states have used forced assimilation of tribal peoples to create one national language, but is this really necessary? Switzerland is a multi-language nation. It's doable. Cantonese and Han can exist together. Why not church and state? This is done in many countries. I love your short videos. Keep up the good work! Islam and socialism/communism often being pitted against each other whether in fact there were lots of example of these two can work side by side, because both are teaching about communal way of living, support workers and working-class family and just taking care of each other in general. Islam is also a flexible religion, meaning it can adapt to local values to ensure the good reception and understanding of its teaching especially in early years or period of Islam. In case of Islam in China, several studies and notes pointed out that Islam has arrived in China since early years of Islam, dated back to when some of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were still alive. So, in a sense, it also came in its purest form of teaching.

12:25 when you explain about the intuitive logic for Chinese people versus foreigners.. This is precisely why it is so valuable and necessary to perserve 'a people', culture, nation. Presently, I'm from a european country and for the last 20 years Europe has taken in billions of refugees, but those were people who tended to integrate. Now we have expats, who are very different, for they don't integrate, earn better money than the average local person, don't pay taxes for x amount of years etc. It's causing a 'disruption', not because of the economic differences, but because people tend to overlook these sort of 'nuances' in how peoples who share a long history with each-other embody a collective consciousness. What you state about the Chinese mindset, which makes complete sense to you (and which is something I had to also uncover to understand, for the same motivations you did) but doesn't translate well to the other side, is why I think we should value our local communities, our history, our culture and identity more. In the West, we're losing all of this. Not because of immigrants, but because we're erasing it ourselves as well. Our politicians contribute to it. They want a 'global' world. But in the process we're losing ourselves and people are, indeed, lost. So many teens and children who are mentally unstable. Thank you for pointing it out because I sincerely wish people would understand this very fact of the different type of consciousness that you embody, coming from the lineage, heritage, history and culture you were born into. It's so easily overlooked and people truly don't seem to notice how valuable it is to understand it, in order understand yourself.

    Here is the thing.
In my understanding culture and religion is not the same things.
    Not on Islam at least
According to Islam, there is no superiority over culture…
All culture is welcome as long as it does not contradict my religious beliefs.
I like how this man explained that “if I didn’t wear a head cap doesn’t make me less Muslim than who wears one.”
In the holy Quran and authentic Hadith, you will never find anything where it’s identified any specific fashion and culture to follow. It’s saying you need to cover your body but didn’t say which colours or any fashion to follow. It says the mosque needs to be a clean and comfortable place to pray and doesn’t mention any dome or any colours.
Islam gives us complete for freedom to follow it according to our culture.
    Just protect yourself from haram.
Also, the writing in the mosque caught my eye… 3:11
the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself taught that the "love for one's nation is a part of faith"
My life in China makes me understand Islam more than any other Islamic nation.
Where I found cultural diversity in Islam.
And local Chinese are quite respectful towards Muslims... I saw halal restaurants make a double business as any other restaurant. Most Chinese people prefer Halal restaurants.
I think “ Langzou la main “ is the largest restaurant Brand in China.
I am currently living in Dubai.
Unfortunately, I have to say, I found more Islam in China than in Dubai.
Dubai is a Muslim-majority region but here Islam getting fade away day by day.
