2nd movement, I almost began to weep. It takes a great pianist to so touch the heart. And pianist and conductor (orchestra) are trully matched.
My favourite piano concerto, interpreted in a most amazing way. Probably my favourite ever performance. I'm astounded!
A fresh approach to this concerto did it no harm, because Mozart's brilliant work allows it. Miss Grimaud is never afraid to put her own spin into her musical performances and they are very entertaining as a result. Thank you to all concerned here.

По-моему - это вершина. Какое-то уже нереальное проникновение на сакральном уровне в волшебство 23 концерта. Особенно вторая часть. Просто непостижимо. И очень хорошо, что Гримо играет 1-ю и 3-ю части быстрее, чем это обычно принято. Такая быстрая, лёгкая и виртуозная "беспечность" в 3-й части, на мой взгляд, в точности соответствует замыслу Моцарта.

Tout commence de manière sublime , puis arrive l'adagio et là cela devient divin.
The famous Busoni cadenza begins at 8:50 and ends at 10:10.
Notice Helene is playing the Busoni cadenza in the 1st movement. This caused a huge falling out with Abbado in 2011 who insisted she play the original Mozart cadenza and the incident actually caused a break in the recording contract. Might be why she is both conducting and playing here. This was three years after their now-famous appearance together in Lucerne with her playing the Rachmaninoff Concerto No 2. Both stuck to their guns and a possibly brilliant collaboration has been lost. But Ms. Grimaud does a beautiful job here, on the level of Uchida. But I personally wish she'd stuck with the Mozart cadenza. Few of his original cadenzas have hung around and the ones we have have become an integral part of the music, the one exception being the Beethoven cadenzas to the Piano Concerto No 20 which I wouldn't give up for anything.
+J J Townley Sometime-composer of Piano Concertos Mozart would probably have expected pianists to improvise their own cadenzas. AFAIK, his surviving cadenzas were mostly written for pianists who were not sufficiently versed in improvisation. What he would have felt about a pianist playing a third-party cadenza -- one that was neither his nor their own improvisation -- is anybody's guess. And of course, as present-day listeners, we are entitled to our own preferences.
Very astute observation, Uri. I'm only seeing this now. I was notified that someone named Sirius Wang left the following comment but i don't see it here: "But as I know Mozart left no cadenza for KV.466.
The famous one is by Beethoven.
Unless you're talking about Franz Xaver Mozart: the son of W.A. Mozart." I don't know why Ms. Wang is referring to K 466 when we're talking about the No 23. Mozart did in fact leave an original cadenza for No 23. It is the one that is usually published with the concerto and is usually played in concert.
I don’t believe that Grimaud has a problem with sticking to Mozart’s cadenzas in general. The companion concerto on this album is KV 459 (No. 19 in F), and in that case she does stick to the Mozart cadenzas that have become standard. I believe that Grimaud has a problem with this one in particular. The cadenza is too similar to the one to the first movement of the other A-major concerto, KV 414. The one idea quoted has up to this point been heard only once, at the close of the orchestral exposition, and the quotation is oblique: two rising notes each repeated in dotted rhythm. All of Mozart’s other cadenzas, including the alternate cadenzas as well as the aforementioned cadenza to KV 414, have explicit references to themes. I personally STILL prefer Mozart’s cadenzas to others, but I see why Grimaud had a problem with this one.
Pianist Rudolf Serkin played this piece with Claudio Abbado and London Symphony Orchestra, you may be able find it in RUclips.Just as beautiful, I have the CD.

what was in Mozart's head while he was composing this 2nd movement? IMHO, Her play/version was better than Kemf/Bamberg which I have in my old IPod. Hélène Grimaud just grabs my heart & soul to a different world or Heaven?

Hélène Grimaud, née à Aix-en-Provence le 7 novembre 1969, est une pianiste française, également écrivaine et passionnée d'éthologie.
Biographie
Enfance et formation
Hélène Grimaud est née à Aix-en-Provence. Du côté maternel, elle serait, d'après ses déclarations, issue de Juifs berbères établis en Corse et, du côté paternel, serait descendante de Juifs algériens1,2. Certaines sources3, indiquent aussi que les ancêtres paternels d'Hélène Grimaud étaient originaires de Trets en Provencenote 1,4.
Hélène Grimaud découvre la musique et le piano à l'âge de sept ans, avec les heures d'initiation à la musique de Marie-Françoise Tarrit. Celle-ci convainc ses parents de la confier à Jacqueline Courtin, qui la prépare au conservatoire d'Aix-en-Provence. À onze ans, elle est présentée à Pierre Barbizet, qui la prend comme élève et avec lequel elle poursuit ses études musicales au conservatoire de Marseille. Pierre Barbizet restera sa référence, son « maître ».
À treize ans, elle est reçue première à l'unanimité au Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris et entre dans la classe de Jacques Rouvier. Elle a pour condisciples, de deux ou trois ans plus âgés qu'elle : Marie-Josèphe Jude, Claire Désert, Éric Le Sage… À quatorze ans, elle donne son premier concert à Aix-en-Provence, avec l'orchestre du conservatoire, pour jouer le Deuxième concerto de Chopin5.
À quinze ans, Hélène Grimaud obtient le premier prix de piano. La même année, elle enregistre la Sonate no 2 et les Études-tableaux de Rachmaninov, qui lui valent le Grand Prix du Disque de l'Académie Charles-Cros. Elle poursuit durant deux années des études de troisième cycle, durant lesquelles elle bénéficie des masterclasses de György Sándor et Leon Fleisher.
En 1987, Hélène Grimaud joue ses premiers concerts en dehors du conservatoire5. Elle participe au Midem de Cannes, au festival de piano de La Roque-d'Anthéron, où elle est remarquée par Jorge Bolet. Celui-ci confiera à Alain Lompech, qui en rend compte dans Le Monde : « Hélène Grimaud ? Je n'ai pas rencontré un talent aussi extraordinaire depuis longtemps ». Suivent ses rencontres avec Jacques Thelen, qui devient son agent, René Martin, directeur du Festival de La Roque-d'Anthéron, et Pierre Vozlinsky, directeur artistique de l'Orchestre de Paris, puis son audition par Daniel Barenboim, chef de l'Orchestre de Paris. Il l'invite alors à donner des concerts avec l'orchestre5.
Carrière
Hélène Grimaud donne son premier récital en soliste à Tokyo, puis à Paris. En 1990, elle joue à Cleveland. Après quoi, elle entreprend une longue tournée aux États-Unis, de Washington à la Floride, en passant par Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Baltimore, New York où elle donne un premier récital au Metropolitan.
En 1991, alors âgée de 21 ans, elle s'établit à Tallahassee en Floride. Elle y fait la rencontre d'un vétéran du Vietnam solitaire qui élève une louve dont elle hérite à la mort du vieil homme. Elle se passionne alors pour ces animaux, étudie leurs mœurs et leurs comportements et décide de créer une fondation et un parc consacrés à leur étude et à leur réhabilitation. Elle obtient un diplôme d'éthologie, indispensable pour ouvrir un tel centre.
Au printemps 1997, elle cofonde avec le photographe J.Henry Fair le Wolf Conservation Center à South Salem, dans l'État de New York : une organisation privée, à but non lucratif, visant à étudier et promouvoir la sauvegarde du loup. Hélène Grimaud est aujourd'hui correspondante de plusieurs organisations scientifiques et œuvre pour la réintroduction du loup dans son milieu naturel. Cette même année, elle déménage pour s'installer dans le comté de Westchester, au nord de New York.
En 2006, elle quitte les États-Unis pour vivre quelque temps à Berlin. Elle réside actuellement en Suisse.
Compagne du photographe Mat Hennek, elle a adopté ses deux enfants. Hélène Grimaud est sujette à la synesthésie, phénomène neurologique par lequel deux sens physiques sont associés, dans son cas la musique et les couleurs.
En 2003, elle interprète à Londres le Lamentate d'Arvo Pärt.
En 2004, elle reçoit une Victoire d'honneur lors des Victoires de la musique classique.
En 2005, elle est lauréate du prestigieux ECHO Preis comme Soliste instrumental de l'année.
Parmi ses partenaires de musique de chambre, on dénombre Martha Argerich, Dmitri Bashkirov, Gidon Kremer, Shlomo Mintz, Gil Shaham, Paul Meyer, Mischa Maisky, Truls Mørk, Christine Schäfer, Lisa Batiashvili, Thomas Quasthoff, Sol Gabetta, Gautier Capuçon et Renaud Capuçon.
