Love the rope shafted club drill. We had a practice club with a rope shaft at my home course back in the day. Kinda reminds me of the Medicus training aid. It really helps people feel the proper rhythm/timing/sequence/path of the club. People think you have to swing it slow, but you can swing as fast as possible with it done properly. And actually doing it properly will most likely add speed.

I’m continuing to groove the feeing but I really feel like I finally have clarity on what I’m trying to do with a golf swing and it’s make playing fun again. After a few range sessions I will say that for me, the shorter the club the closer and more vertical the imaginary ball that is being hit feels. As you progress to the driver the imaginary ball feels more out in front of you. This makes sense due to the angle that the plane line would be on. I still struggle with the longer clubs. Wedges through 6-7 iron I feel incredibly comfortable with. I’m starting to control where the ball is going with ease. The other day I flew the green on a par 3 with a 180 yard blade 8 iron and it felt very effortless. I’ve got to find a way to make the driver better. I lose way too many shots OB. Most drives are good but always have 2-3 holes where stuff falls apart.
Overhand Golf Channel I tend to push everything with the woods- driver. Sometimes I hang on to the release (old habits die hard) and slice and then will occasionally over correct and hook the daylights out of the ball. Just have to spend more time on this. Overhand Golf Great thought and effort behind all your stuff. A corollary point I never quite understood-- with flexible shaft you demo'ed it now becomes more obvious to me, how if one's intention is on the extended grip ONLY, that with flexible shaft drivers, or even with steel shafted irons, the pros are getting that additional kick and actually a delay in the club head actually striking the ball--shown in slo-mo as the shaft bending backwards away from the ball. And probably this is also contributed by the fact that the center of mass is way distal to where one is applying the force and torque with intention as you've stated. And now question....since irons, the INTENTION to release point is later than with woods/driver, what are your thoughts on your concept being applicable to irons?
Is this very similar to a pump drill? Or like faldos preset pump drill? Seems to work great for people who want muscle power as opposed to a fluid feel(throw out-Steve Pratt, Payne Stewart etc).

Wow, I had an epiphany the other day. I think you covered it in one of your earlier videos. I imagined a straight line from the top of my backswing to the spot at the bottom (but just in front of the ball where I wanted the bottom of the circle). That is the entire motion. Also, I have a Tee Ball tee thing that I attached a pool noodle piece (just extends up a foot or so). That would work for the Holy Grail because you can clip it on the way down to get feedback without breaking your shaft.
Thats some pretty extreme over the top lol. Good instruction , if you can get the rope feeling with a real shaft, you are no longer steering and have learnt the feel of that particular clubs shaft plane. You can't steer rope but you can (but mustn't) steer a shaft.
Ok, can you square your two ideas. Bc I don’t see how you are under/supinating in this outward/downward motion. I asked a similar question on another video. 1) “swinging outward” and kinda down and the swing much shorter than you believe. 2) being under the club and the wrist supinating on the downswing.
Well, there is really no “down” in the golf swing it’s actually flat and level. When we lean forward to face the ball we’re essentially raising the ball up to mid chest or sternum height. The only way there is “down” is if you’re imagining that you’re standing vertically. It’s all about perception and we naturally perceive things based on the idea that we’re standing vertically. If you attempt to swing a child’s club, which is way too short, you’ll have to bend over much farther or and interestingly once we bend over far enough our perception changes and we realize we’re swinging perpendicular to our spine angle. As far as supination goes there should be no active manipulation of the hands if you’re using the golf club properly. It is designed to rotate and close through impact which is why the weight of the clubhead is outside the shaft.
'And you miss, and you've got a golf swing.' Lol. Genious.... So, I need to kinda drive downwards at an angle about my club shaft, right? I've been trying to go straight down and I can do it and hit the crap out of it, but I feel like I gotta post up like crazy and get my left hip out of the way real fast.

I was trying to driving it horizontally down towards the ground - that's why it was so inconsistent. I only found this video now that said i have to drive it ON THE SAME PLANE as my swing (diagonal).
A lot of people got the same idea. I think when I said, "straight down toward the ground" everyone seems to think I meant vertically. Although the swing is on a diagonal plane the idea is to swing straight down on that plane.
Presumably this “down” bit is actually the “out and down” of the swing as it is so easy just to swing vertically down thinking that is sufficient of itself
Hi Overhand I also got to the situation where I started to hit down, and so this was a very helpful video. It affected the longer clubs and woods more than the shorter irons. Will practise and let you know.
I have some success with holy grail method, but I have club facing issues. When the club get to the imaginary ball, is your club face open to the path, if so how to close it?
Hi, your HGoG c!hanged my golf life. So many good things in your videos. Can you speak a little bit more about wedging, chipping and pitching ? Keep the good work, it's so much needed
This is maybe why Speith and Mickleson "struggle" with their driver. Speith is left handed playing right and Mickleson right handed playing left so for both their trail arm is their weaker/uncordinated arm and like you say the trail side adds power/speed late and the driver collects the ball later in the arc.
@@Daniel_V23 good comment, you have to read Hogans book knowing that he was a born a lefty. It was the first golf book i got. I have managed to slightly strengthen his weak/neutral grip. But (prob due to weakening his left hand to avoid hooking) Hogan worked massively on his right (unnatural) and became a great player. Interestingly/weirdly i can know play a rally at table tennis with my left hand which i couldnt do 30yrs ago, due to working on my left side for golf!
@@paulkraus4226 On page 30 /32 of his famous book he states he was born a lefty was switched over to right handed as a boy (like many lefties were) and started golf left handed but then switched to right handed again as he couldnt find cheap left hand clubs!
Sounds very similar to what I heard Mike Austin say in a video, that the left arm cannot add any more speed to the swing by trying to actively move it, just need to maintain the Figure 7.
To be clear, is the effort focused on hitting the imaginary ball where the shaft is parallel with the ground and then there’s no more effort to swing or hit? Is that correct? In other words, it seems like once you apply force to get the club parallel to the ground (hitting the imaginary ball) then there’s no more need for applying force as the club is swinging through the actual golf ball to where the club is perfectly in the center of your body just after the ball. Is that right?
Yeah, pretty much. We can't efficiently power the club sideways. We swing forward, in the direction we're facing, in every sport including golf. It's incredibly inefficient and awkward to try to propel the club sideways with any power. So, you apply maximum power and speed as if you're hitting the imaginary ball and the you just let the club fly through the real golf ball. Any further effort would actually be slowing the club down. ruclips.net/video/gchaKsh4emM/видео.html
So the only other question is do you look at the imaginary ball spot when you’re trying to hit it or do you still keep eyes on the ball? When I try it I’m concerned about missing the real ball.
Great, thanks for the video. A certain Count comes to mind. Could you tell us how you made your hinged club? Would love to hit balls with a flexible club like that.
@@HolyGrailOfGolf great, thanks for the reply. I hope you get it out on the market. Maybe as a back up just sell the hing part and remove the liability, if they knock themselves out it is not your problem because you just sold the hing, their own club cause the harm to themselves.
It is like the orange whip trainer but says nothing about the release. Normally you get a slice with an over the top swing, but with a good release (follow through) you will be able to hit the ball straight to the left.
Incredible stuff, thank you very much! I see you mostly with a driver, shall I assume the exact same with the irons, the only thing changing a bit is the plane, as short irons would have slightly more vertical planes?
@@HolyGrailOfGolf Excellent, thank you again! I imagine now the wood plank plane that you use in your videos, and throw down , along it , at 7:15. I remind myself that I need more room to unfold the driver (throw it more at 45 degrees in front and less for wedges).
Today my third attempt at the HG system. At the range. First checked my clubhead speed with my Swing speed Radar. Not much head or tail wind. 7 Iron: with my former/''previous'' swing: approx 65 Mph; With the HG system 72-75 Mph. Balls ended up several yards further than 'before''. 5 Iron more or less the same speed and (minor) distance improvement. Hybrid with my ''before'swing": 70 Mph. With the HG system 78-83 Mph. Distance 160 yds. Approx. 8-10 yds farther. Didn't use my driver. Still much room for improvement here. Also way too much tension in my muscles/tendons. The chance from a (predominantly) left arm swing to a right arm swing with an aiming point at 7.15 is underway ! Hopelfully my new swing is there by March next. (And a working anti-Covid vaccine as well !)
Yes and no. Really there is not active or controlled release of the club. It happens automatically when done properly and couldn’t be prevented if you tried. When the club is swung properly it’s incredibly easy to use and does everything people are trying to “make” it do automatically. Just watch any 5 year old swing and you’ll see this is axiomatic.
Always wondered where the name of your channel cam from. Penny dropped when watched " Golf's biggest secret of the bombers". Thanks i am a slow learner. Fan from South Africa
As I said in the video it's from when people try to add more power with the left arm. If you swing with only the left arm you're already putting everything you've got into it so you already know there is no more to give.
uh oh.. I've made a mistake. All this time, I thought we were going straight down into the ground on a vertical plane and much much closer to my body. like around my toe line. Once I saw you doing the move with the shaft in the ground, I immediately understood that we're bouncing that ball on the incline plane and a little further out! hmm, and to think I've still had some success in striking the ball doing it my old way. But the correct way gives me zero fear and really opens me up to a lot more freedom. If you haven't already my last two videos are with my old intentions thinking I was doing the correct intention.. still produced great shots. But my old problem has always been that i'm just a little flippy at impact, never really have had any substantial shaft lean, and my hands were never really forward enough.. and I'm coming across the line at the top-- but these are my old tendencies anyway. I also don't know if you remember but I always asked about my goathumping issues and loss of tushline issues, and they pretty much vanished since I picked up the whole Moe Norman style of single-plane swing.
@@HolyGrailOfGolf yes I was too excited and heard straight down, but i also failed to see in clear sight that the board in your HGOG video was on the incline plane of your shaft as well, so yea my mistake lol
A safer and easier to make training device is a yard of thick rope, you might want to put some tube foam on the end because to start with you will whack your back!
I really like this way of thinking about the swing. So at 4:13 he introduces a tool- It is right in line with his weight at that point in the shaft, where it breaks apart. Remember Taylor Made came out with the BUBBLE shaft in the Mid 90s-? They placed a Bubble if you will at that very point in the shaft that this dude talks about. The claim was it would add 5 MPH to your speed with no changes. So In a weird way this supports the theory- and so does science-that he preaches. This guy is good!
Over the top is because we want to rotate to the ball, which is natural any rotation to start the downswing is over the top, first move has to be down,
Kinda! ...Well similar. The one where you talk about the feel of hands feeling ‘under’ the shaft and you show a model of a twisted club shaft where, if you hold the hip upright, the club is bent forward so its clubhead would still be down in front of you. It didn’t have a loose part to swing but looked similar to the one in this video when you were just standing holding it.
I'm about to make a video about that very topic. Everyone who talks about shallowing the club doesn't actually know why but in my video I'll explain it. Hitting that stake is actually a shallowing action but not how you'd think. It's very counter-intuitive which is why no one understands it. That's all I can say right now. The video should be done in a few weeks or less and it's so important that I'll be charging for it. It will increase accuracy and add literally 30 to 50 yards to the average golfer's drives. Oh, and with less effort!
You don't believe me? That's ok. Actually, you shouldn't. You should go to the range yourself and try to prove me wrong. Do as I advocate (Please watch the Holy Grail video: ruclips.net/video/fniAGqLKbr0/видео.html ) and see if you don't hit longer and straighter than you ever did before. I will put more videos from the range and course when I get a camera with some memory. I only have my phone right now and I can only shoot for a few minutes.
I as well thought you meant drive the imaginary ball straight down into the ground. Basically if the pitcher represents hitting the real golf ball to him.... You would be hitting the imaginary ball to the on deck hitter?.?
@@darrendomain4127 this video here very well explains it in plain sight. keep watching the part where he's sticking the shaft straight into the ground. Get yourself a thing similar and do that yourself.
He says one time in the 1st video to hit straight down into the ground. I'm sure now he didn't mean that. Are you saying to hit the imaginary ball down into the ground on the shaft in the ground angle or to hit the imaginary ball towards the target line?
@@HolyGrailOfGolf ok I'll try... 65% of the time I completely crush it. It is truly remarkable. Higher, longer and dead straight. I feel like my finish is way high finishing by my left ear. I played baseball thru college; this should be easy. One more question you're not trying to hit it towards Centerfield you're basically trying to hit it towards first base. Is this correct
Focusing on a spot off your rear leg is definitely not the way to go. However this guy has some interesting theories on the swing, has a beautiful swing himself and i like his videos. But the holy grail concept doesn't do it for me. Just a personal thing I suppose.
Give it a try. I mean seriously. It'll feel ridiculous to you at first but the ball flight will amaze you. I still remember the first day I tried this, it felt like I was swinging in completely the wrong direction and I was sure people could see it but then I realized I was swinging the proper direction and everyone else was swinging the wrong direction. I think the best way to try it is to try and prove me wrong. If you're not trying to prove that it doesn't work, you're likely to try and help it work and that will prevent you from doing it right. It'll feel like the ball will go dead right, but it won't. Thanks for watching and commenting. Play well!
@@HolyGrailOfGolf oh I most definitely did give it a long trial. Watched all the videos it just didn't click for me. However, through the knowledge you imparted on the concept itself i was able to rewire my golf swing from a hitting action to a pure inside swing. I just needed a different key which was swinging my hands and grip on an arc totally forgetting about the clubhead and ball. Lots of thought, watching countless videos of pro quality swings. Just focusing as I watched on the hand path. Tons of practice swings. Hours of practice just swinging through the ball eliminating the hit impulse. Now my swing drops nicely inside and I'm able to use my body to release the ball. No flip anymore. No casting. I've really improved. When i was just focusing on the grail position I still was hitting at the ball try to control the clubface which is a problem. So you're info definitely helped me so I appreciate it. Best of luck to you.
You're probably right. I was hoping that the viewers were intermediate golfers and already had a decent grip but you're right. I should have talked more about it. Without the proper grip, nothing will work right.

You turn your shoulder, drag the arm back leaving it hanging and limp and then when it's behind you it raises up and gets thrown by the shoulder and elbow. Also, overhand isn't overhead. Overhand is on or about equal to the shoulder plane. Underhand is bowling, side arm is the forearm perpendicular to the spine.
Your rotation will square the club face
Hi, your HGoG c!hanged my golf life. So many good things in your videos. Can you speak a little bit more about wedging, chipping and pitching ? Keep the good work, it's so much needed
Very helpful to actually understand what we are all trying to do. Please keep going. I think more people will appreciate this in time.
Speith and Mickelson haven't done too badly
@@Daniel_V23 Hogan was not a lefty
@@grahamjones7371 Hogan was not a lefty
@@paulkraus4226 On page 30 /32 of his famous book he states he was born a lefty was switched over to right handed as a boy (like many lefties were) and started golf left handed but then switched to right handed again as he couldnt find cheap left hand clubs!
Sounds very similar to what I heard Mike Austin say in a video, that the left arm cannot add any more speed to the swing by trying to actively move it, just need to maintain the Figure 7.
can I use this for chipping also?
That is very helpful. Thanks man.
Lol! Where can I get that whippy club from?
Great stuff! I’ll try to apply this in my next video!
Incredible stuff, thank you very much! I see you mostly with a driver, shall I assume the exact same with the irons, the only thing changing a bit is the plane, as short irons would have slightly more vertical planes?
Yes. That's exactly right.
Are you talking about "releasing"?
Hmmm. Why should the left arm collapse like that? if you swing with left arm only, it doesn't do that chicken wing thing?
I have noticed you can get away with straight down with the shorter irons but the woods and driver need to be more out and down
A safer and easier to make training device is a yard of thick rope, you might want to put some tube foam on the end because to start with you will whack your back!
Over the top is because we want to rotate to the ball, which is natural any rotation to start the downswing is over the top, first move has to be down,
I believe it does work if you do it right
Dan Martin’s “Pro” training aid seems to fit eight into this.
Its kind of a piece of dung
Hey that's that club from your video but real!! :D Great food for thought.
Kinda! ...Well similar.
‘Hip’ was a typo. I meant ‘grip’.
I keep hitting behind the ball and or shanks with this method
Like Mike Austin said - "under, out and up".
Daren the golf caddy told me about ya!
wow
So why do they say you need to shallow the club if all you need to do is hammer in that stake
@@HolyGrailOfGolf thanks mate you deserve all the cash
Swing the pro 3.0
Everything works if you do it right. No kidding😂
Why not go to a range or the golf course to actually show your ball striking and ball flight?
How about showing a shot hit by you and your method down the line, so we can see the results of your teachings..
I only have my phone right now and I can only shoot for a few minutes.
oops you came up with one later in the video!
I as well thought you meant drive the imaginary ball straight down into the ground.
Basically if the pitcher represents hitting the real golf ball to him.... You would be hitting the imaginary ball to the on deck hitter?.?
I'm not sure I'm getting it. That's why it probably works sometimes and sometimes not
@@darrendomain4127 this video here very well explains it in plain sight. keep watching the part where he's sticking the shaft straight into the ground.
I am not going to watch this because I have a nasty habit of doing what I'm not supposed to. You are right , over the top is a brain problem.
Little burp there 😂
Focusing on a spot off your rear leg is definitely not the way to go.
@@timothyslaughter476 Ok, that's great to hear. It's so fun to play when you're not playing "golf swing" and truly playing golf.
only thing you missed is the grip!
You're probably right. I was hoping that the viewers were intermediate golfers and already had a decent grip but you're right. I should have talked more about it. Without the proper grip, nothing will work right.
@@HolyGrailOfGolf like my boxing coach told me you need to get your foot work down be for you can throw a punch.. then he told me it was like baking a cake!! I told him i don't bake..lol i guess the moral of the story is you need the fundamental before you swing! Any ways i like your channel if your a special effect guy for movies im sure you can up the content!!
Holy shit this is for super beginner's
Why is it over hand golf when the feeling you should have is under hand🤔
Underhand is not what you want. The swing is an overhand motion. You're swinging on the same plane as the shoulders.
@@HolyGrailOfGolf No, No... typical golf instructor think you figured out a secret so you feel you need to confuse people to keep them coming back because if you told them what it really was they would have no need to watch your videos. I guess Tiger and Ben Hogan were wrong lol the shaft parallel at half way down is a great position but you don’t get there in an over hand motion your right hand should never feel like it’s turning over if it does your twisting the face which you don’t want to do ever, to do this you have to feel like your tossing underhand. Just like all the greats try to teach. Just thinking overhand makes you pick the club up right away, another big amateur fault, just relax and let your body swing your arms no way you’ll feel an over hand motion, closer to a bowler than a pitcher my guy.
@@pushtostart1377 When you throw a ball overhand you don't take your hand up an over your shoulder. Take a look at nearly any PGA tour player at impact and you'll see their clubhead and hands are on or above their shoulder line.
@@HolyGrailOfGolf but we are swinging not throwing so not the same even though it looks similar. Swing your right arm aroun I. It’s socket which way would you swing it if you wer swinging a club? Behind you which would be overhand and over the top, or out in front and up which would be under hand no just work that movement into a golf swing.
Did you even watch the video? What you're describing is not what he's doing. Check out John Erickson or Bradley Hughes and you might begin to get it.
