The Spread of Islam in West Africa

The Arabs successfully attacked and converted most of North Africa between the years 641 and 680 AD, when they took control of Egypt and Morocco, respectively. Two separate paths were taken in order to complete the conquest: one led westward, down the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, to Senegal; another led eastward, via the republics of Western Sudan, to Hausaland; and the third led eastward, from Tripoli and Egypt into the desert, to Bornu. Islam quickly spread from this location throughout the rest of West Africa.

Following the conquest of North Africa by Muslim Arabs in the 7th century CE, Islam spread throughout West Africa via merchants, traders, scholars, and missionaries, that is largely through peaceful means whereby African rulers either tolerated the religion or converted to it themselves. 0:30
