I had the wonderful experience of watching Gene Kelly perform on a cruise ship (SS President Wilson) in July 1966, sailing from Manila to Honolulu. Only one show but the whole passenger list must have been in that ball room. He'd usually eat with the Captain when not in his stateroom, but just his smile and countenance was a wonderful addition to that cruise.
The embodiment of charm - practically all the participants in the filming had smiles of joy on their faces for this performance. Sadly, this film was the prelude to the finale of the golden age of the MGM musical, which by this time was thankfully, at least, relishing in CinemaScope and the added wonder of multi-directional stereophonic sound!
Kelly hated CinemaScope - he thought it really didn't serve dancing on the movie screen. The film also ended the friendship of Kelly and Stanley Donen, who co-directed the film with him - the two had too many creative differences.
MGM had a total of 7 New York City street sets. This is either the Fifth Ave. or Park Ave. set (they also had Brownstone Street, Eastside Street, Warehouse Alley, Church Street and Cullem Street.)
This is an off comment. Why haven't TCM played Damn Yankees. Since, it is a Warner Brothers film, it should be easy to acquire. Whatever Lola Wants is a musical classic.
@tree-jj4kc I guess I should have stated that I miss the elegance and wisdom that the former adults exhibited. But I didn't think my comment would get picked apart.
Ya see folks? Before there was millennial self-care, there was Gene Kelly singing this song. In 1955. While tapping on roller skates. That’s right. Gene Kelly. Ahead of his (and our) time.
Maybe? The family is hooked on The Newly Wed Game The Price is Right 80s Match Game Clean House Taxi Lavern and Shirley Anyway thanks for Gable and Crawford 👏
Good ole fashioned movie racism - this is a studio that had Mickey Rooney do a blackface number. In Dumbo the crows are extremely racist stereotypes. Meet Me in St. Louis had Judy Garland do a very bad Asian impression for Under the Yum Yum Tree. The reality is that most movies (outside of Flower Drum Song) were very racist towards Asians
Sadly there's a history of a number of very talented artists being total abusive jerks. Benny Goodman, arguably the greatest jazz clarinetist, was a tyrant (as was Buddy Rich). Apparently Reynolds got the worst treatment, in part because she had never danced before. Of course, it should be stated that Kelly was miserable to almost all the other actors and dancers on Singing in the Rain. From what I understand, Fred Astaire was a much kinder person to work with.
The athleticism and total control Kelly has while on roller skates, even tap dancing with them on, is absolutely legendary.
I was thinking the same thing. He was marvelous!
This is like a wave of calming relief from current world insaninty.
Isn't it just. ❤
I can barely stand on skates let alone tap dance flawlessly. Gene Kelly is the best!
Gene Kelly is my all time favorite musical actor. No one danced like him. Loved his movies with Frank Sinatra too
Pure joy.

How on Earth did he do that?!! I would fall on my face so many times if so tried! Fantastic dance number! Old fashioned strap on skates look so cool!
Love those fifties' fashions, the suits and dresses people used to wear.
God, I miss my Dad
Without him I would not know love
Magnifique...quel talent ...

Jean Reno debe de estar orgulloso con esta bella cancion
Is that a set? I'm guessing it's not just a regular street corner. It's a magical setting with the wide sidewalks

@@jamesrawlins735nice, how do you know about this?
@@WOWTODAZ I would say that MGM is the most written about film studio of all time - there's a lot of information available.
What a shame I can’t watch TCM because they are in a stranglehold by the cable and media companies. Year in, year out this never changes.
Ki tud ilyet manapság? ❤❤❤👍👍👍
I Miss you Daddy

Old Hollywood I’m telling you
He had... IDEA
Thanks, Warner Brothers, for ruining TCM. The films have changed so drastically that it does not even appear to be the same channel at all.

3:04 casual racism? What's with the stylised oriental music and his comical movements?

It's an old movie from 70 years ago.
You weren't even alive then. Get over yourself.
It was over too soon for mgm
Trump’s theme song.
I don't understand why he felt he had to be so rude to Debbie Reynolds when they were filming Singin in the Rain. What a jerk.

The film was released over 75 years ago, and both Reynolds and Kelly are dead. Maybe it's time to let it go.
@@TheRealLaughingGravy Dead or not, people's reputations live on long after they're gone.
@@jamesrawlins735 You are correct. Mr. Astaire taught Debbie much of her dance technique.
