A Winter's Night on the Southern Giant | Nordisk Svalbard 1 SI

- Thousands of people every year make the early start to catch the sun rise on Pen y Fan, at 886m the highest mountain in Southern Britain. I took a different approach and camped on a more peaceful nearby mountain, at 824m, to wake up on a perfect winter's morning with amazing views of the Southern Giant.

It takes some really special scenery to keep my attention for more than a general glance, and as soon as anyone mentions sunsets and sunrises, I zone out! But wow, that was a special overnighter. As spectacular as your footage is, and as talented as you clearly are with a camera, that's one you've made me wish I'd experienced for myself. Kudos!
Thanks Tim. It was just a special time to be out. The amount of snow and the stillness of the morning. One thing I didn't really capture was the amount of skiers and snowboarders dropping off the sides of the peaks. It was just a playground up there that day.
Absolutely mesmerizing! This video captures the serene beauty of a winter's night on the Southern Giant in Nordisk Svalbard so vividly. The stark, icy landscape against the backdrop of the night sky is simply breathtaking. It's like stepping into a dreamworld, where the stillness of the snow-covered mountains and the dancing auroras above create an otherworldly experience. Thank you for sharing this magical journey with us! Can't wait to see more from your Svalbard adventures. Keep exploring and inspiring!
Shame I didn't capture any of the night sky on this one...
Something so beautiful as the hills in there winter cloak. Stunning.
Thanks Gary. It was a beautiful trip. Made more special by the fact there was only snow on the mountains. A few miles away it was just a normal day.
It was actually really fun seeing all those people out and about enjoying the snow! Nice spot to stick a tent, and clear mornings like those are fantastic for the soul ❤ Loved the guy skiing past you! Good work 👍 James.
Yeah, everyone was happy and in awe of it all. I didn't capture some excellent snowboarders dropping off the side for about 15 seconds of fun and then an immense trudge back up!
@@TheWalkingKev Yeah I was thinking it must've been a hot walk up for the skier!
@@joinmeoutdoors it was strange heading back down and into the green land all around. It made the mountain seem more isolated, that only the tops had snow.
@@TheWalkingKev I find I really have to force myself down below the white stuff when you can see the green below. Would rather stay in Narnia!
Good to see the Svalbard back in action Kev..
wonderful scenery, made even more spectacular with the thick blanket of fresh snow! ☃️
It’s a very open and exposed summit, nowhere to hide up on those mountain tops at all! 😬
Plus I can’t believe how busy they are - even at the crack of dawn, not sure I could camp up on any of those summits, I like rocks to hide behind personally on my camps, thankfully we got plenty of those over here in the Derbyshire Peaks..👍🏻
Cheers Ash. When the wind started howling I knew I'd picked the right tent. Never felt at all worried by how exposed it was. It was a magical morning and TBH it was enhanced by the crowds on the summits opposite. It was good to see so many people enjoying it.
I'm not a chatty person, but everyone was saying hello and talking, admiring the scenes and it was just a happy place.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a peaceful camp as well, but it was a totally different experience. I've only been to Derbyshire once. I'll have to return one day.
Wow that was epic Kev.
Some stunning scenery and was well worth the blizzard at night.
Loved some of the Timelapse 👌
Thanks Phil. It was a pretty epic few hours either side of darkness.
Really enjoyed the video. Beautiful scenes. Thanks.
Thanks Sarah, appreciate you stopping by.
thanks Kev, that was a great little adventure in the snowy hills, epic scenery, nice one
Thanks Reece. Definitely one of my favourites to edit just looking at the amazing skies and scenes.
Fair play. Good winter camp with a great view. The shot of Corn Du and Pen y Fan with pink sky identical to a pre dawn photography shoot that I did. Loved the cloud miving through.
Thanks. It was a location I'd been meaning to camp for a while, I definitely picked the right night for it! The kind of moments that will stay with you forever.
Great credit to you
Thanks Mark.
This looks an amazing adventure Kev! Stunning in the snow. Start to finish I loved this one. Well done on the camp 😊
Thanks Yas. It was probably my best camp yet. Just beautiful in the snow.
@@TheWalkingKev it looked it Kev, really great to see 😊
Amazing footage and beautiful snow views. Very adventurous effort!
Cheers Adam. Couldn't have gone better really.
Superb opening sequence 👌a dramatic video with good narration and stunning views. Well done atb Taff 🤠👊
Thanks Taff. This camp will take some beating this year.
That looks like a proper adventure and lots of fun! Thanks for sharing, Kev 🙂
Thanks for the kind words. It was just fantastic. Shame I couldn't capture the howling winds overnight. But I just wasn't too keen on getting out of the tent.
@@TheWalkingKev I don’t blame you mate haha! I’m going to have to find you on instagram now and see what you’ve got on there 🙂
@@thegreat7861 thanks. I need to do more with IG these days. Getting a bit behind with some of the photos.
Another great camp Kev
Thanks Jeff, one of the best I've ever been on.
Nice camp. I was out doing some astrophotography last week in that snow and I wondered if you'd got out for a camp in it. Too cold for me, I'll admit.
Thanks. It didn't feel too cold to me. I think now I've finally got a proper winter sleep mat it's made all the difference. Plus the tent was really cosy.
Hi ive got the MSR hubba hubba nx 2 person 3 season tent , It's very good in wind , but for the reasons you have experienced not recommended in snow, The Hilleberg Soulo would be ideal in the conditions you were in. Were you warm enough ? I always find my feet suffer. The sky looked incredible . Hopefully run into you on the hill someday.
I was very warm all night, actually took clothes off as I was too warm. I had some Nordisk down slippers on, they're great. Tent was really warm and cosy and once I sorted the door issue out it was fine with the snow as well.
Are you around the hills in South Wales?
Hi , yes around the hills regularly, especially at the moment as have my ML assessment this August, Im usually found off the beaten track at practicing my navigation skills, I spend a lot of time in Snowdonia also. you commented on one of videos last year , Mynydd Maen.
@@TheWalkingKev
@@multigabby2 yes, I wanted to camp in that location after watching your video but was out off by your reports of spiders!
Hi that video was filmed in October, It was mating season for spiders , I think that's why there were so many , I had a tent full, it was the same on the Rhinogs In September, I'm not bothered by them , but I understand the phobia some ppl have.
@@TheWalkingKev
@@multigabby2 yeah, I'm not keen. I really enjoyed seeing someone else camping locally. Some great locations around here and very peaceful as well.
God what a great video ❤
how much does it really weighs packed with the stuffsack and the included pegs? i have seen many differents datas concerning the weight on the internet.
Thank you for your video!
I'll weigh it this weekend and let you know.
@@TheWalkingKev thanks a lot :) how did you managed to pitch that tent in the strong wind 😀 did it ever leaked?
@@Pasequale100 it pitched fine, the inner was fine pitching in a bit of falling snow. It's not leaked so far in the rain I've used it in. I've not seam sealed it.
@@TheWalkingKev thank you a lot! Why have you bought this tent and not another model? there are sooo many tents out there 🫣
@@Pasequale100 I own a lot of tents. I bought this one for how strong it is in high wind, reasonably light and room inside for bag as well.
Nice sound thanks for sharing your adventure. I recommend you visit the himalayan mountains k2 and Nangaparbat view point from one place moses peak. Add this sound in your bucket list.
I think they're a bit beyond me!
@@TheWalkingKev feel himalayan sound upon my request, this trip will be the most beautiful trip of your life.cheers
