She hasn't been in the spotlight lately.

Especially with her past. The Internet is brutal nowadays. She has $50 million dollars anyways. She doesn't have to ever work super hard if she doesn't want to. I saw some of the comments here criticizing some past behavior but she admits in the video money and success brought out the worst in her so it's not like she lied about that. She admits she got too ambitious. So what is the issue here? Social media is so toxic now why would anyone wish that hell on her?

I agree with you. If we are true fans, we should want what is best for Michelle. She gave us all so much. The solution lies in our hands. If we stop supporting all these toxic people then they will either change either they will go away. She basically invented or predicted the mainstream success of things like Clarisonic: "Hey guys buy a sonic oscillating toothbrush and use it on your face to exfoliate." She also used to pull from her art background and give awesome DIY cheap hacks and tips like using Dawn antibacterial dish soap to clean makeup brushes and beauty blenders - instead of buying expensive cleansers - something that my female relatives still do, up to this very day.

Literally rewatched this video after Tati's video and the collapse of the beauty community making me appreciating that back in the day we had Michelle who REALLY uploaded makeup videos without any drama,scandals or TEA whatsoever... These beauty gurus nowadays should really learn from Michelle and take a break from the internet to really figure out their miserable lives and solve all their problems privately like an ADULT !! It's so ridiculous that Michelle was the only person who did the right thing leaving the community and grew from within mentally and came back stronger and more mature.
I think the biggest reason we love your videos is because you remind us of those innocent days where RUclips wasn't a career, but a field of people expressing their passions and joy. Kristen Embry I totally get what you're saying. Beautiful comment worth thinking over actually. It's not that having a career out of RUclips is bad, but everything comes with a price and one slightly influential person's actions /lifestyle or a trend these days influences many others. It isn't just RUclips, society increasingly has been lacking soul. On the one hand you can say we have people who are very aware and open minded and accepting (compared to previous generations) , but there's also a lot of emphasis on glamour and marketability. Competition, the survival of the most aggressive and active lot, brings a strange obsession for perfection. A world where everything is for sale, is ultimately stifling as a whole, whether it brings profit for individuals or not is a different question altogether.
Absolutely beautiful the way you perfectly painted the road to success and the hardships that come with it; for anything. Also, for anyone that had conflicting feelings on the ending having ads, know this is something she's working on for herself without anyone really telling her to. As she said, she is still striving to continue creating and discover more without anyone dictating her. To be honest, I really miss the old beauty community. No shade, no drama. It's all about beauty arts behind the makeup with makeup tutorial. No doubt that Michelle Phan is the real mvp of beauty gurus. We all were still young, living with big hopes and big dreams back then, sit in front of pc watching her Barbie Makeup Tutorial Video, which inspired us to do makeup as a kid. And I swear I miss all of that. Incredibly nostalgic. It's like the world knew that the community is about to be a huge mess and save Michelle from it, and im glad that she left youtube. You can tell how much she enjoy her peaceful life right now, living as a normal human without chasing the fame. And i'm happy for that. I'm happy that the world could save Michelle from toxic drama. Michelle, we will never forget who you are. We still love you and still support you no matter what. Stay who you are. ❤️
That Barbie tutorial was one of my favorite videos growing. That and the Parisian makeup video were standout videos I rewatched growing up. I miss all of that so much, but I'm glad we can still watch the videos and appreciate Michelle's years of hard work. I'm glad she left too, it would be sad to see the toxicity of this platform ruin someone who is truly a beautiful soul.
When she says "money can't buy happiness" she's not saying it from the perspective of a rich kid. She's saying it from the perspective of someone who grew up poor, soneone who has been a broke college student with bills to pay and a family to support. She's one of the first big RUclipsrs. An Asian-american child, she was the daughter of two immigrants. Her family was very poor, so she worked extremely hard in school in order to get into a good college and support her family by making a lot of money. But in the end she realized med school was not for her and she applied to art school instead. I believe due to her grades, she even managed to secure a scholarship for art school as well. Her mother was devastated that Michelle would not go to med school but in the end accepted it. The students in Michelle's art school were all presented with laptops, which also had access to internet. She used the webcam to film a beauty tutorial and flash forward to the present: through consistent hard work Michelle has made enough money to support her family. Anyone who says she has no idea what she's saying, that she couldn't possibly know the true value of money is, I hope after reading this you've gained a new perspective.

I think every HUGE beauty guru needs to sit down in a well-organized conference with and without youtube and fix EVERYTHING. Literally. RUclips is messed up. Casey Neistat has said so, Shonduras has, Roman Atwood has, Tanner Fox has, and a bunch of others like Shane Dawson and Grav3yardgirl. Things need to change. I like that money made the content because back when youtube first came out right before Google took over about 5 or so years before, it sucked. I didnt like it at all. I hated how everything linked to a video and they were crappy. Right before Google took over like 1-3 years before is when youtube was awesome. I loved it and still do for the creators that dont let the money make them. But honestly the money and drive to get the views to make the money is what made people become better creators. Its true. I just love how a bunch of creators have said this on RUclips in videos and a few in emails and its just ignored for big buisness that supplies the ads that pay the creators and youtube. Google is money hungry and I wish the owner of RUclips hadnt sold out to them. You can tell because they changed the play buttons twice since the first ones they made. I hate the new ones. Its an ugly recessed button shape in a plaque. Its not a button anymore. So lame. The only one to stay the same is the diamond one cause not a lot of people have it.

Through her social media, she has said that she will return once she recharges, referencing this anime (?) character that recharges before he returns again, stronger. In the description of this video, she also says she'll come back once she feels inspired to share again. Yes, she is happy now. But it doesn't mean she won't come back, no one can guarantee that she will, but she might. If you don't follow her or know her I guess you really don't know then. She's still uploading videos on her brand's channel.

Honestly, looking at some of the comments that have already popped up, I can see part of the reason why she left. Whether you are rich or poor, anyone can be affected by depression. It's almost as if because she is Michelle Phan she's not allowed to feel isolated or lost- money or not, she is still human. People don't wake up one day and decide they want to have depression, or feel lonely or lost and the fact that society still thinks this way about mental health shows how backward our thinking really is. Why is everyone so bitter about her success lol. She's a person of ethnic minority and came from very a low economic status. She had many odds against her- it's not like she had everything handed to her on a silver platter. If anything, it should be inspiring?

All youtubers are so young. Things can get very overwhelming for them, specially with their lack of experience of real life situations. I honestly don't blame them for getting anxiety or feeling depressed. My case is similar but different at the same time. I decided to open a boutique with my life saving at the age of 18, it was fairly successful but my dad got sick and I had to move out from where I was living and ended up selling it. After a while I decided to open a second store at age 22, that brings me to today. It's not working out at all. I spent all my savings trying to sustain it, I am currently working night shifts so I can open it in the morning and I'm participating on flea markets on the weekends to sell and try to promote the store. Im exhausted, overwhelmed and frankly scared. Some times I wish I could just disappear from all the problems I got myself into, so I completely understand Michelle for doing that. The road to success is a long and arduos one, and once you reach a fair amount of success problems just become bigger and harder to solve. At this point I'm questioning if all this is worth it? but when you think of all the trouble, humiliations and inability you have for not having money, that's what keeps you motivated and that's what keeps me from giving up. But I'm really tired... Michelle I wish you the best, life is really a pain but we have to keep on living, eventually things will get better. Problems will always be a problem, but without them life would be too good to be true.
Lulu Sapphire oh god, I read everything you wrote, it made me cry. I'm so young, yet so much has happened. My father died when I was still yet to be born, it's been my brother and mom since I can remember, then my boyfriend came along, and then my first job, I got paid shit at that job and I did EVERYTHING. Now I'm married to that amazing man, and I've moved away from home, my mother hates my husband, and her hate for him made me feel so toxic inside that I ran away, and I got married, not out of spite but because I know he's the one, now I still listen to my brother saying how; no mother wants to see her child marry so young. Well it's not their life, don't take other people's words for it, listen to what you feel is right inside. (I'm talking to you, anybody that will read this). I still haven't reconstructed my relationship with my mother, and brother. I have a new job, one that pays and one where I don't have to do everything, I lost a few in between, like she said (the higher power knows what's right and the right time). Now I finally have an ID, and I'm learning to drive, and later this year I'll try and get my GED, and then I'll get a better job, and then I'll move to a new city, and much later on I'll start a family, with the man I love, but for now I'm 19 years old, and I need to make a better effort with my mom. She also used to pull from her art background and give awesome DIY cheap hacks and tips like using Dawn antibacterial dish soap to clean makeup brushes and beauty blenders - instead of buying expensive cleansers - something that my female relatives still do, up to this very day.

Kristen Embry I totally get what you're saying. Beautiful comment worth thinking over actually. It's not that having a career out of RUclips is bad, but everything comes with a price and one slightly influential person's actions /lifestyle or a trend these days influences many others. It isn't just RUclips, society increasingly has been lacking soul. On the one hand you can say we have people who are very aware and open minded and accepting (compared to previous generations) , but there's also a lot of emphasis on glamour and marketability. Competition, the survival of the most aggressive and active lot, brings a strange obsession for perfection. A world where everything is for sale, is ultimately stifling as a whole, whether it brings profit for individuals or not is a different question altogether.
Absolutely beautiful the way you perfectly painted the road to success and the hardships that come with it; for anything. Also, for anyone that had conflicting feelings on the ending having ads, know this is something she's working on for herself without anyone really telling her to. As she said, she is still striving to continue creating and discover more without anyone dictating her. Now she can use the money she's earned from her previous success and the lessons she's learned to build another chapter of her life. Thank you Michelle, I hope you found peace during your time away. To be honest, I really miss the old beauty community. No shade, no drama. It's all about beauty arts behind the makeup with makeup tutorial. No doubt that Michelle Phan is the real mvp of beauty gurus. We all were still young, living with big hopes and big dreams back then, sit in front of pc watching her Barbie Makeup Tutorial Video, which inspired us to do makeup as a kid. And I swear I miss all of that. Incredibly nostalgic.
It's like the world knew that the community is about to be a huge mess and save Michelle from it, and im glad that she left youtube. You can tell how much she enjoy her peaceful life right now, living as a normal human without chasing the fame. And i'm happy for that. I'm happy that the world could save Michelle from toxic drama.

That Barbie tutorial was one of my favorite videos growing. That and the Parisian makeup video were standout videos I rewatched growing up. I miss all of that so much, but I'm glad we can still watch the videos and appreciate Michelle's years of hard work. I'm glad she left too, it would be sad to see the toxicity of this platform ruin someone who is truly a beautiful soul.
When she says "money can't buy happiness" she's not saying it from the perspective of a rich kid. She's saying it from the perspective of someone who grew up poor, soneone who has been a broke college student with bills to pay and a family to support. She's one of the first big RUclipsrs. An Asian-american child, she was the daughter of two immigrants.
Her family was very poor, so she worked extremely hard in school in order to get into a good college and support her family by making a lot of money. But in the end she realized med school was not for her and she applied to art school instead. I believe due to her grades, she even managed to secure a scholarship for art school as well. Her mother was devastated that Michelle would not go to med school but in the end accepted it. The students in Michelle's art school were all presented with laptops, which also had access to internet. She used the webcam to film a beauty tutorial and flash forward to the present: through consistent hard work Michelle has made enough money to support her family.
Anyone who says she has no idea what she's saying, that she couldn't possibly know the true value of money is, I hope after reading this you've gained a new perspective.

I think every HUGE beauty guru needs to sit down in a well-organized conference with and without youtube and fix EVERYTHING. Literally. RUclips is messed up. Casey Neistat has said so, Shonduras has, Roman Atwood has, Tanner Fox has, and a bunch of others like Shane Dawson and Grav3yardgirl. Things need to change. I like that money made the content because back when youtube first came out right before Google took over about 5 or so years before, it sucked. I didnt like it at all. I hated how everything linked to a video and they were crappy. Right before Google took over like 1-3 years before is when youtube was awesome. I loved it and still do for the creators that dont let the money make them. But honestly the money and drive to get the views to make the money is what made people become better creators. Its true.
I just love how a bunch of creators have said this on RUclips in videos and a few in emails and its just ignored for big buisness that supplies the ads that pay the creators and youtube. Google is money hungry and I wish the owner of RUclips hadnt sold out to them. You can tell because they changed the play buttons twice since the first ones they made. I hate the new ones. Its an ugly recessed button shape in a plaque. Its not a button anymore. So lame. The only one to stay the same is the diamond one cause not a lot of people have it.

I don't think she's ready to stop. She's still creating, through her brand. Through her social media, she has said that she will return once she recharges, referencing this anime (?) character that recharges before he returns again, stronger. In the description of this video, she also says she'll come back once she feels inspired to share again. Yes, she is happy now. But it doesn't mean she won't come back, no one can guarantee that she will, but she might. If you don't follow her or know her I guess you really don't know then. Honestly, looking at some of the comments that have already popped up, I can see part of the reason why she left. Whether you are rich or poor, anyone can be affected by depression. It's almost as if because she is Michelle Phan she's not allowed to feel isolated or lost- money or not, she is still human. People don't wake up one day and decide they want to have depression, or feel lonely or lost and the fact that society still thinks this way about mental health shows how backward our thinking really is. Michelle, thank you for the beautiful message and animation in this video, please never stop learning! x

Thanks Michelle for everything you have taught me since I was 16 years old. I am 24 now and always looked forward to your videos. I know you may never see this comment, but I want you to know how much you took a place in my life and always made me smile and feel beautiful inside as well as out.

All youtubers are so young. Things can get very overwhelming for them, specially with their lack of experience of real life situations. I honestly don't blame them for getting anxiety or feeling depressed. My case is similar but different at the same time. I decided to open a boutique with my life saving at the age of 18, it was fairly successful but my dad got sick and I had to move out from where I was living and ended up selling it. After a while I decided to open a second store at age 22, that brings me to today. It's not working out at all. I spent all my savings trying to sustain it, I am currently working night shifts so I can open it in the morning and I'm participating on flea markets on the weekends to sell and try to promote the store. Im exhausted, overwhelmed and frankly scared. Some times I wish I could just disappear from all the problems I got myself into, so I completely understand Michelle for doing that. The road to success is a long and arduos one, and once you reach a fair amount of success problems just become bigger and harder to solve. At this point I'm questioning if all this is worth it? but when you think of all the trouble, humiliations and inability you have for not having money, that's what keeps you motivated and that's what keeps me from giving up. But I'm really tired... Michelle I wish you the best, life is really a pain but we have to keep on living, eventually things will get better. Problems will always be a problem, but without them life would be too good to be true.

Lulu Sapphire oh god, I read everything you wrote, it made me cry. I'm so young, yet so much has happened. My father died when I was still yet to be born, it's been my brother and mom since I can remember, then my boyfriend came along, and then my first job, I got paid shit at that job and I did EVERYTHING. Now I'm married to that amazing man, and I've moved away from home, my mother hates my husband, and her hate for him made me feel so toxic inside that I ran away, and I got married, not out of spite but because I know he's the one, now I still listen to my brother saying how; no mother wants to see her child marry so young. Well it's not their life, don't take other people's words for it, listen to what you feel is right inside. (I'm talking to you, anybody that will read this). I still haven't reconstructed my relationship with my mother, and brother. I have a new job, one that pays and one where I don't have to do everything, I lost a few in between, like she said (the higher power knows what's right and the right time). Now I finally have an ID, and I'm learning to drive, and later this year I'll try and get my GED, and then I'll get a better job, and then I'll move to a new city, and much later on I'll start a family, with the man I love, but for now I'm 19 years old, and I need to make a better effort with my mom. I hope everything turns out well for you!!! Me! And everyone reading!
