people react to being called beautiful

- I created this project for an art class at my high school in Chicago. I wanted to capture the beauty I saw in my peers, but it turned into an experiment about our perception of self halfway through when I realized my classmates were having a variety of reactions; reactions that made me smile and made me sad. I hope you enjoy. And I hope you can see the beauty in yourself as well as others.

Even as a confident person, I still find it hard to take compliments. I believe that I'm an okay looking person, but it's hard to believe others do.
A lot of people have been saying that the girl at 1:41 is rude, and while how she reacted was rude, I feel bad for her because she reacted in a way where she felt like it was a joke on her. She believes that someone calling her beautiful is a joke, because maybe in the past no one’s ever thought she was beautiful and she has bad self esteem. There’s always a reason for these things.

Those smiles are beautiful. I worry about the ones who didn't smile.
The girl at 3:15 had such an interesting reaction. A half smile to a frown then a deep breath where her shoulders go down. I wonder what she was thinking. Hard to gauge that reaction.
Yes, she looks down and to the side, as to escape from the moment, my guess is she`s a person who has her emotions very tightly wrapped, or another way to say it, she has very high and strong walls to keep most out. You can see it starts to breach her wall and then she regains control.....her eyes look like they cry a lot, when she`s alone.
Everyone talks about that rude girl but I think that 3:15 this girl looked in more pain than anyone else, hope she's doing okay right now
Yeah I saw that too
yeah same! I thought about how I'd react and it would probably be kinda like that. A little smile just like she did because I know the person maybe actually thinks what they said but when you yourself can't see it then... what to say... I'd trade every compliment I ever got from anybody if I could feel better about my looks myself...

@@inihilisme1511 the difference between giving money and calling people beautiful is that beauty isn't real and you can't use an compliment for anything anyways. With money you can buy stuff. Beauty is a bit like schrodinger's cat, you can't know wether or not it's true or not but it doesn't matter. You must assume both options are correct. And that's the truth, things are simultaneously beautiful and not beautiful, because beauty isn't an real tangible thing you can assume whichever option you like most and it will be as good as the truth. The truth in schrodinger's cat doesn't exist, both options are equally true. Beauty is the same. Wether or not it's real does not matter, because both realities are true
@@ape9368 I think most of them took it as a bad joke and just smiled awkwardly not to offend her if she was actually saying the truth. What she did wasn't sincere, and I'm sure that a lot of us know that.
I see all these comments saying "the one reading this is beautiful", but they don't even know how the one reading looks. Yes, beauty is subjective, but these people, or at least some, knew she was doing it because of the views.

It's safe to assume she isn't used to receiving kindness in such a genuine way; very likely she's been hurt by others to a point where she either doesn't think she's deserving of it or assume she's being tricked again or both. Unfortunately, a lot of people come from similar backgrounds.
Despite that, it's always worth the effort to believe beauty in others even if they don't accept it in the moment. We don't know how her story ends, but we can believe she'll carry those words throughout her life, "I think you're beautiful." And the truth is, she's right.
Not that deep
@@worstfateit's not that deep
@@worstfate??? It is.
@@worstfate Sorry your brain doesnt work man, I dunno what to you.
It was pretty damn obvious she wasn't accepting the compliment due to some shit in her life.
You mean the black lady?
1:40 I almost feel bad for her, she must have been told she was beautiful as a joke at some point in her life
She must have already gone through so much abuse in her life it's hard for her to accept she deserves good things.
I don't think it's actually that complicated. You could probably just boil this down to insecurity.
@@merrillgeorge1838 Not necessarily. That's mean, but that won't permanently damage a person.
The girl who said "I'll cut you" is so committed to her tough girl persona, but you can see that's she's going to take that home with her. I hope it sinks in.
All of them were unique. I especially loved the girl with the blue hair.
This shows how you can be beautiful in an individual way. Love it.
everybody is Beautiful in their own way. we all need to spread more love.
I feel bad for the ones who either didn't react or reacted negatively when she told them that they were beautiful. I can't imagine what they were told or had to go through to make them believe that they're not.
Maybe they just looked at themselves in the mirror, what do you think?
But it doesn't matter if you aren't smart (and God knows you ain't): you're wonderful.
maybe they are just shy introverted invididuals, nothing to do with abuse or traumatic expirience.
What ever it is you can find a horrible specimen at 1:45
Thank you Patric
Yall need to lay off the girl at 1:44. People don't end up like that by themselves: I'd bet a hundred dollars that she's getting defensive because she thinks that the camera lady is doing this for a cruel joke. That her friends dared her to do it, to make fun of the ugly girl who genuinely believed she was beautiful. That's the reponse of somebody who's been bullied and isn't taking chances anymore. Believe me, I know. Leave my girl alone.
That is kinda a bully mentality.
@@netodoss.4543 girl i-?? if i was the bully, would i be able to relate to what she's been through? i've been bullied. _that's_ why i get her. not the other way around. i think you've missed my point.
@Neto dos S. some people get defensive beacause they've been through alot. they arent being "bullys" they're trying to protect themselves from getting hurt even if to other people it seems mean.
your speaking facts ^
@@hotgalchrissi ^^ you're the one speaking facts girl! 🙏
there was once a friend complimented me for my beautiful eyes.i looked at her dearly, giggled and say thank you.then i continued asking her "do u think u like my eyes?" "whats about them u really loved?"
she continued to looked at me with her deep gaze. i acknowledge her compliment and she acknowledges my feature...i love...being ..an acknowledging human ...
They all really needed to hear that, some more than others.
To the overly aggressive girl, she really is beautiful, and I hope as an adult now, she sees her own beauty and self worth.
That poor girl definitely went through something to make her that way.
because for some of us who never hear it when we finally do it actually feels like a trick or manipulation tactic. It literally goes against the reality you have lived. it's a short circuit in the brain feeling. That's why aggression or mistrust is easy to show. I am the same way. When you go your whole life never getting validated on anything in like decades, and one person says something im like what the fuck to you want from me, what are you selling here. lmao i got to try and not do that but the thought goes through my head. Because i think well either you are fucked up to be so different than literally everyone else i have ever run past. OR You are trying to warm me up for something and there is a catch coming. Or lastly it's not actually toward the person themselves but a quick outburst of why did my life have to grow up in a situation so different to what i am experiencing right this moment, i feel cheated and thanks for reminding me of that douche lol. A few reasons why a negative reaction spring up over a compliment.
Likewise the opposite is true and we call that being spoiled or entitled. Some people that all they ever experience is constant validation or special treatment or whatever just for existing and that becomes their reality and their expectations. When they cross people that don't fit that mold they become angry because how dare this person say no to me everyone else jumps at my feet. Think of it that way. There is too much validation and attention which makes people spoiled then there is not enough attention which makes people feel worthless and like they are being used for something when it does happen because you think why is it happening right now but never before. Most people lie somewhere in the middle of not being treated special all the time but still experience goodness towards them enough to feel like it is meant towards them.
Well said sir/ma'am
@@guitarman0365 after being manipulated by people you are supposed to confide in, putting up a shield and not letting yourself become vulnerable is an easy habit to slip in to.
@@guitarman0365 I just wanna say, dear person, that you are beautiful
1:41 She's not really being mean it's because she thinks it's a cruel joke meaning she has probably been told that she's beautiful as a joke before. It's a protective instinct.
it happens to me all the time ://
Salad Sina same here
Yeah and it was really sad.
Her reaction really shocked me and I feel for her because I think she finds herself ugly. Seems that she's even hating herself or her look. Poor one, I pray for you.
Blah blah blah
It hurts that you can see some of them felt it was a joke, like they can’t be beautiful…tell them
Isn't it so interesting how people become more beautiful, the moment you tell them they are?
It's incredible how much beauty came out from people when they're smiling

True. Shows you don't have to look/be a certain way to look beautiful you just need a reason to smile even if it is only for a split-second.
"The women: aww thanks.
The men: wait... what?
They didn’t hear lmfao. Also most the men did say thank you 😂
Women compliment women a lot. They don't compliment men for fear they'll misconstrue it as romantic attraction, and men don't compliment men for the same reason.
Men never get compliments, so we don't know how to react when we do.
My heart just has broken a few times watching this pour things who are obviously wounded inside so they can't believe that someone can find them beautiful.... That's so sad... Wish them only bright people in their lives to find them beautiful every day!!!
Each person's reactions show how undervalued they were... Where was the love that these incredible people deserved? Where were the people that these wonderful beings deserved?... The greatest sadness in watching this video is knowing that everyone probably didn't believe what they were told. Yes, I'm coming here to comment it 8 years later to say: all these people are beautiful in their own ways, all these people deserve to be beautiful in their own ways, it's not about each person's physique and appearance, it's about each one of them and what they are.
