    Diary entry #614
    Walter Hartmann
    Feldwebel
    It's October 7th, 1944. Uncle Helmut's contacts at Junkers seem to have paid off. After that injury last September I knew my wings were cut for good, but at least he could get me into a mechanic training for the new aircraft we're fielding, the Me-262. Others call it Schwalbe (Swallow) but I'm still going to refer to it as Haifisch (Shark). It looks like one, despite the fact it's flying. That new engine is an engineering marvel and a bane at the same time. The lack of quality parts mean we have to take them out every 12 flight hours and in most cases, they end up as scrapmetal. A sudden throttle movement can cause anything from a backwards firing shotgun effect to an engine fire/explosion. But when it works, it works like magic.
    I was placed into the ground crew of KG51, for the mysterious Hauptmann Wolfgang. Rumors say he hates his first name, that's why it's left out of every report, list, briefing... everything. He also was hellbent of naming his plane "Eimer mit Schrauben" (Bucket of Bolts) which is strange to begin with... He seems to be a good candidate for aces however. Yesterday he got his first 2 kills with the machine.. on his first combat flight! That's something. Got his Iron Cross for it immediately. He complained about the heavy drop of shots from the autocannon. Turns out nobody told him the shells fall 3 metres at 100m range, he'll have to compensate for it in the future. If anything, he loves his cannons. Ground attack variants fly with 2 MK-108s only but he didn't want to hear anything about less than 4 guns, he that's what he got.
    I personally don't know how things are going to end, the final victory seems less and less probable as days go by. The three things keeping my spirits high are my tasks, the crew and the fact Anna is perfectly safe from any harm in Dresden. I can't wait to see her again.
    The engine inspection is coming up, I have to get back to work.

    On takeoff, the gear is raised before flaps... Flaps are giving you extra lift, which you want at low speeds.
    On landing it's the opposite. Gear is lowered before full flaps are lowered.

    from what i remember hearing most of the 262 were lost due to mechanical failure or shot down while landing or taking off. because once they were at speed not much was gonna catch one.

    • @TeargasHorse
      @TeargasHorse 3 года назад +2

      The early jet engines were very flawed and required very gentle handling. Because of this, many of the allied victories were catching the jets returning to base when they are low and slow, because of the slow throttle response, and the fact that if you go from slow rpm to max your engine can catch fire and explode. The same was true for the rocket powered Me-163 which was totally unpowered on return to base.

    Got to love that the cockpit gauge plate was made out of wood to house the gauges. And the reason the 30mm ammo seems devastating is because it is a mine tracer. ie it has a small explosive tip that just wrecks anything short of a tank that it hits, hence why the P-47 seem to be torn to pieces when you hit it.

    • @Wolfpack345
      @Wolfpack345  4 года назад

      It is a nice touch that the devs included it. A lot of the late war German aircraft have it.

    • @eduardoroth8207
      @eduardoroth8207 4 года назад

      im pretty sure that most 20mm and 30mm cannons of ww2 had explosive ammo for air targets. what you are talking about is the Minengeschoss, which was a special explosive ammo used by german cannons that basically had even more explosive mass. the 30mm already hits like a truck, and the Minengeschoss just shreds anything in it's path to bits

    In general you would bring your gear up before your flaps, because when raising the gear, you are only reducing drag.Keeping it down negatively effects acceleration and rate of climb. Whereas, raising the flaps, decreases drag but also decreases lift. Love your vids.

There is a huge difference between flying flat screen vs flying in VR. I kinda miss seeing the details of the landscape stretch out beneath me, and locating landmarks on the map to navigate by, but flying a tight formation or shredding an enemy plane in VR is just such a different experience. I use PWCG to fly coop missions with my brother. Great fun flying together. Looking forward to seeing how this series develops.

    The 262 was designed to intercept bombers, the swept wing providing much better control at higher speed. They had a 110 mph advantage over the P-51 and used it to swoop down, hit B-17s, then zoom away long before allied fighters could react... however, several P-51s did claim 262s including the Tuskegee Airmen. The biggest problem with the 262 fighter was Hitler himself, having the plane redesigned for ground attack in true NAZI Party fashion: take something simple and screw with it to make such a jack of all trades it can’t do anything at all. They did this with everything to the point it handicapped their air forces, which was a big help for us ironically. Still, the 262 is truly a watershed aircraft and all modern fighters draw their roots to it or the rocket powered Comet which pioneered the delta wing (but of course, the Russians claim all of that was theirs first, if not for Stalin committing genocide on aeronautical engineers constantly, but we will never really know).

    • @colinkelly5420
      @colinkelly5420 4 года назад +2

      They were all really eager to shoot it down. In the 8th Air Force at least, pilots considered shooting down a ME262 as more prestigious than attaining ace status. There was even one US ace (can't remember his name) who was tour complete, who tried to get back onto operations because he wanted a ME262 kill. So once the initial awe passed, there was a strong desire to bag a 262 for themselves.

    Always raise the gear first... flaps are there to sustain your aircraft at low speed...

    The take off looks painful, especially with a fat bomb and full load. Still definitely an interesting campaign, seeing how different this beast is relative to the prop planes

    Facing a 262 with a Spitfire is like using a sword in a gun fight

    • @eduardoroth8207
      @eduardoroth8207 4 года назад +1

      well, he spitfire is very maneuverable, and the 262 is not. but all the 262 has to do, is to keep his speed high, which it can do very well.
      but yes, the 262 is an amazing aircraft!

      @danglingdave1787 3 года назад

      Not really the me262 was faster but at this point in the war spitfires we're using the griffon engine and also carried cannons so not that much of a difference.

    The spit you took down was the one that brewed up Springborn your flight lead but it looks like the chap wasn't as lucky and was killed when the spit collided with the ground. Also three Fw 190s crashed for some reason.

    • @Wolfpack345
      @Wolfpack345  4 года назад +1

      I know the FW-190s were tangled up with you the bulk of the Spits and P-47s so that may have been the case.

    Didn't germany put a throttle limiter in that would only gradually adjust the throttle, no matter if the pilot janked on it? Might be a different, later version however.
    Also it's really sad that the armored glass in most WW2 cockpits is still not able to have this lensing effect that real glass has, the struts holding them in place appear a tad smaller in real aircrafts, as the entire sheet of glass appears a bit thinner than it actually is, because of the thickness of the glass lensing some light around them. It does lead to some distortion on the edges.

    With the Wolf Pack name any thoughts on doing a P47 Campaign? With appropriate 56FG Zemke's Wolfpack Skins of course.
    I'm currently reading the book Wolfpack Warriors by Roger Freeman hence the question.

      I certainly want to do one in the future. There is a scripted campaign coming out soon called Hell Hawks Over the Bulge. I think that would be a fun one :)
