Every weekend having to shut my bedroom door to block the engine noises, while I played my ps2, and my dad going mental downstairs at his screen “HAMILTONS A BLOODY TWAT!”
I was never into F1 before the new intro, so I never got to experience it as an F1-related piece of music. I can see why people might prefer the old one, but I think F1 is the same as the UEFA Europa League, now that they've got their own custom soundtracks, designed specifically for the competition, I feel it's taken the show to a whole new level. Both competitions used to use regular songs that weren't designed with any sport in mind, never mind motorsport or football, but now their new themes are. In fact, if you listen to the full F1 Intro music, you can hear where it quietens down with commentary in mind (where David Croft usually comes in with "Welcome to x race"), before picking back up again to finish off the intro. You don't get that with an off-the-shelf piece of music.
At eighteen thousand revolutions per minute this isn't music this, is the scream of science. This is the inner world of pneumatic valve springs, of mean effective pressure, three hundred brake horsepower per litre of displacement. The quest for the perfect four stroke V8 naturally aspirated reciprocating engine. And in the middle of the hot metal, the carbon, the alloy technology, sits flesh and blood. Rising out of its carbon fibre monocoque the coolest head. These are the eyes that could pick a face out of a crowd, as if motion were being slowed down, not passing in a blur at 200mph. This, is the pure mathematics of angles and aerodynamics, the physics of g-forces and friction, and the raw instinct to race. These, are the masters of speed. This.. is Formula One.
Besides the "new fangled hype", the theme we all loved so much (Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain) was a incredibly hard act to follow. That bassline is ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WHOLE FREAKIN' MUSIC HISTORY!!!
Well they didn't quite nail it. The 'this is formula 1' part caused them some headaches as it was all but done when they realised quite how different the 2009 cars would look and they couldn't afford to redo it.
I still think the new one is really good, I think the music is better in my opinion, it’s just the graphics that need to be improved, same goes for the official intro’s graphics too.
Whatever genius wrote that intro needs some sort of award, because it was perfect. It really captured the over-dramtic, fierce, and raw essence of motorsport and the incredible racers in the driver seats. The other genius who edited it also needs an award, because the sound design captured the intensity of the power man has been able to harness for his own purpose. This is what motorsport is about!
The current theme is awful in my opinion. It's just far too generic, really. It's one of those songs that's very catchy so it gets stuck in your mind but it's just a bad song, so it's annoying that you can't get it out of your head. I suppose that's the purpose of an intro theme song. Because every time you think about it you think about F1 and want to watch it. Well I watch all the races anyway and don't need convincing to watch them, so I get this song stuck in my head for no reason. The theme of F1 is, and will always be, The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. It's the greatest intro theme song of any sport, and even any TV show in general. It just feels like F1. The BBC have a blanket agreement with the music industry that lets them use any song for free, without having to pay any royalties. And it's why F1 had The Chain as its intro, and why shows like Top Gear always had amazing soundtracks. So obviously Sky Sports don't want to have to pay the expensive royalties for the song so we get the generic theme instead. It's such a shame. The BBC are the kings of sports broadcasting, partly because they never have ad breaks cos of the TV license, but also they just always have the best intro themes. The Grandstand theme is genuinely an absolute banger of a song. The Nascar theme is also annoyingly generic yet catchy enough to stick in your mind. But yeah, F1 should absolutely always have The Chain as its theme tune. It breathes and bleeds F1. It's sublime.
I was one when this season was happening but this has to be one of the best F1 Seasons of all time, nearly every team scored a podium, the field was really close for the majority of the season!!
man that theme just unlocks some kind of memory deep in my head, neither of my parents were really into F1 but I always remember hearing the engines and this intro. incredible.
I remember playing with my toys on a Sunday afternoon and hearing this and my dad going mental at the tele and I hated it . Now am a massive f1 fan and he hated it before 2021 and a got him back into it 😂
This to me is childhood, sitting down on a Sunday with my dad waiting for this, as someone else has said Sky just can’t replace this, chills every time
I hold the BBC high for doing F1 justice... I was sad when ITV lost the FOM broadcast rights at the end of 2008 but when the Beeb got hold of it a year later the rest is history. 😄
I was never really into formula 1 as a child, always more fascinated by touring cars, older race cars and rally cars… looking at the current state of FIA and the broadcasted racing we have at the moment, i am extremely disappointed that i missed out on this buzz as a kid. Now im finally able to appreciate those glorious cars of the noughties. Too late. I am sad i am only just discovering this.
The problem is Sky who had used it in their trailer for their full exclusive deal that started in 2019 got into a bidding war with C4 to use it and ended up that neither got it.
Its hard to beat the "the chain" for the music. In Ireland in the late 90s early 00s the network used "right here, right now" fatboy slim. It was the best music outside of the chain for f1 ive heard.
The year is 2009 It’s a Sunday afternoon, my parents are egging on last year’s champion, Hamilton. My brother and I are building Lego F1 cars on the floor. Life is good
Can't say I liked the CGI cars in this version of the intro, but nothing beats "The Chain"''s epic guitar solo as the Formula 1 theme. The Sky Sports F1 theme is very forgettable by comparison, IMHO (no idea why ace Korean acapella group Maytree covered the Sky theme on RUclips, but not this far superior one!).
This one probably hit off so much more than the current ones because it was actually focused on the car - the new one is just a film credits with the names of the drivers which is then repeated on the start grid section …
This is the best f1 intro EVER period I really can't stand the Brian Tyler theme anymore. It doesn't sound like f1 to me. This is what we need. Or just something new
15 years on and this still goes so hard. I have more nostalgia for the late 90s early 00s intros but this one is so elite. CGI holds up surprisingly well too
I was 5 this was my Sundays why my Stepmum wondered how I could find Cars going round in round in circles in essence intresting. I don't really remember this season I remember the Vettle dominate years although it was between him and The McLaren and I hated the fact he kept winning as he was German and I wanted the Brits to win young Football fan to who remembers Frank Lampards ghost goal. But I later respected Vettle that era of F1 was actually competitive Everyone was on the podium usually with Vettel top apart and a McLaren 2nd or occasionally RB 1 2
These are the things Sky cannot replicate. I miss when F1 was on BBC.
Formula 1 on BBC is the best coverage there's ever been, the end of season credits stuck in your memory too.

The new intro grew on me after sometime but the Fleetwood Mac one was so much hype everytime it was on i was doing air guitars everywhere 😂
Funnily, Flootwood Mac thought it an outro.
Agree, I do like the new one, but the BBC version is sooo good!

Fleetwood Mac The Chain about 3 minutes in credit all of them for writing it credit the Beeb Boss back in the 80's for picking it
