Glad you enjoyed it we were brought up on it and absolutely worship it!! Have a chilled delivery coming next week from manzes and cannot blooming wait... Great honest review.
First time I heard of pie n mash was in the film quadrophnea when Jimmy went into the cafe after having a bath in the old bath house. He used a spoon and fork.
As a Londoner I grew up on pie and mash, I only eat it as a treat nowadays, but watching vlogs on you tube, I find that not many people north of the Watford gap like it, maybe it’s the liquor (the best part if you ask me) . I suppose it’s a north south divide, pie and mash kept my family going during the blitz.
I’m from London but my dad was from Liverpool he moved down as a docker and he always talked of a pie and mash but the pie would be made of lob scouse which would be mutton and veg
Well done Deano. I am from the east end of London so I am really pleased you gave proper Pie mash and liquor a go and enjoyed it. It is basic because it was the food of the working class. Pies are always minced beef, no steak and kidney or chicken and mushroom. Some people confuse pie and mash shops with pie mash and liquor shops and they are not the same. We'll be getting you eating jellied eels next 😀
You made a good choice of shop, Manzes has a great reputation. There’s a lot of etiquette around the pie & mash world and I was delighted to see you used a spoon and not a knife. Many people regard turning the pie as sacrilege, it makes the crusty top soggy and not something I would ever do. Authentic pie shops never sell other pies such as chicken, pleased you had the courage to try liquor, that’s the traditional way going back many years. On your next visit you might want to consider the famous Beigel shop in Brick Lane, takeaway only.
Wherever you come from your food is what you love Double pie and mash with loads of vinegar and pepper No need to turn the pies over....just cut them up and eat with fork and spoon HEAVEN
Top video Deano. I think peoples mentality if that is the correct word is very different in parts of the country. In the West Midlands where I’m from our “food delicacy” includes Faggots, Peas and Black Pudding! 😀 old school London place you went to there and looked great. I miss the old school years!! ….Smithy
As a born and bred Londoner, I can't stomach liquor and always have gravy with my pie and mash in my local F Cooke's branch(and their gravy is delicious). When I was young and lived in London we always had sarsaparilla served hot when we visited Walthamstow market (which is a better way to drink it). Good video. 😁
If you want to try some great pies, get yourself over to Stoke on trent and try the Wrights Pies. Very basic, basically a take out but they are served warm and are unbeatable. I didn;'t see how much your Pir, Mash and Liquor cost. Expensive?
Wow, proper flying visit to London there pal ! Getting some proper grub in you though, although I think the locals would regard 1 pie, 1 mash as basically a kid's meal ha ha !!
Hey Deamo Your breakfast looked amazing, think I'd still be eating it. The pie and mash I love but that one didn't look grest but think it was the liquor that put me off.
I prefer gravy to liquor. That looked a bit too greasy for me. Next trip, go to Maureen’s in Crisp street market (failing that, East Enders in the same market area) and get the steak pie and gravy and a mug of tea. You won’t regret it. Cheap and easy.
Great video Dean. Can't beat Pie, Mash and Liquor Lovely Jubbly 👍👍😁 Maureens in Chrisp Street Market is excellent and the Noted Eel and Pie House in Leytonstone 👍👍😁
The Walthamstow branch used to have the most beautiful gold till... Until it got stolen. It's worth googling for the image. Proper grub, Deano... I'd have had a 2-1. I'm hungry now
deano well done for giving it a go I live in Kent now but iam from Bermondsey and manzes was my go to so whenever I’m up there I’ve got to have some it’s what we were brought up on 👍
So glad you liked it! I prefer regular vinegar on mine. Because Manzies closed down in my part of North London (Islington)and the one in (East London Walthamstow ) there aren’t any Pie n Mash shops near by…. So a couple of times a year I order it online - frozen, it comes very well packaged and you just freeze it. I tried the ready made supermarket ones - they’re awful… Everyone seems to be put off by the liquor, probably because you associate gravy with most dinners and those kryptonite looking mushy peas. Yuck 🤢
Hi Deano, for a more detailed review it would have been helpful if you had mentioned how much it cost, you didn't mention the price of what you had or any prices on the menu. Pleased you enjoyed what you had though nonetheless 😊
@@GreenoEatsunless you're watching on a 60" 8k tv mate i think the majority will struggle with that price list, normally a basic thing to run through prices on a food review.

Fair play to ya Deano, wot people forget it was poor man's food back in the 19th century, it was sold off street carts, before Cookes took it into a shop. The pies were originally made with ells out the Thames because they were cheap. It's good old-fashioned working man's fast food & nothing else & and unfortunately, it's dying out.
You go buy the 4 cheap pies in any supermarket frozen pies put some milk on the top slam it in the oven and youve got them pies .. go to a butchers in Yorkshire you will buy a real pie ..
No you haven’t got the same pies. Supermarket pies don’t use a suet bottom and the top pastry is different too. You also get bits of onion in the minced beef pies which is wrong. It’s also very tricky to get the liquor right as the shops have their own ways of making it. Besides, it’s just different. If you want a proper pastry top and bottom steak pie, go to a butchers, but if you want traditional London P&M, go to a proper shop. Nothing is better than each other, it’s just subjective
Ohh Deano, You're a brave lad. I've lived in London since 1988 and I hate the stuff, can't get on with it at all. Most people who love it grew up on it and it's a real treat for them. I do think its sad so many have closed but that's the way things are. Just cos I don't like it doesn't mean folk should either. BTW northern pies are the best. I see you avoided the jellied eels, hurrumph..
As a northener, looks like a wet green mess under what looks like a decent pie.. Those southeners are strange. Not for me that plate. Wilsons pie shop in Kearsley, Bolton is the king of pies!
