  • Gsus4 in Sydney were kind enough to send me the Red-Eye DI/Preamp for review!
    Playing begins at 2:40
Sorry for the tuning, this guitar is WELL overdue for new strings, could probably use a re-fret & some TLC too.
The guitar sounds you hear are mono.
The signal runs through the (Morley) splitter pedal, then, either direct or via the Red-Eye, as shown, go to the inputs of an EV ZLX12P loudspeaker, for my reference in the room.
From the parallel XLR output on the EV, I've plugged into a Roland GO:Mixer which was plugged directly into my iPhone 7 Plus. No processing of any kind in post, and gains were set for best signal/noise ratio. The Red-Eye itself is SUPER quiet, only adding some high-end hiss when I turned its treble control to full, and added a 12dB boost using the treble slider on my guitar's preamp.
Yes; I know that the Go:Mixer isn't a $1000 A/D converter; but it's as good as any other budget interface; it's surprisingly clear for the money and performs really well. You should get yourself one, too, seriously. Magic little box. In any case, this will at least give you an idea of what you're hearing - just want you to know the signal path for transparency.
I A/B'd the signal going direct to the GO:mixer, as well as via the EV loudspeaker (as you hear in the video), and found I couldn't tell the difference in a blind test. Based on this, and the fact that the GO:Mixer's A/D converter is just as good as those found in any mid-tier USB interface, I can confidently say that you're hearing what you would hear if I had plugged straight into an interface.
ANYWAY. My thought on the unit itself, as I heard it through the EV looudspeaker.
The review is unbiased, my only gripes are that there's no dedicated 1/4inch output, and no 9v power jack (I hate batteries). It would be very cool to be able to use a reverb/compressor in the effects loop, and use an extra 1/4 inch output to go to my looper/on stage amp, and use the XLR/DI output to record/hit the PA or FOH. I'll likely use the effects loop as a 1/4 output, hitting pedals afterward, and record the XLR output dry, which isn't too bad anyway!
Other than that, it's a great unit. it switches silently, has a good feel, is immaculately made, and provides a compact way to make just about anything sound as good as it can. I even plugged in one of those Chinese-made, laser-cut "ukulele guitars", and got a decent sound with the treble roll off and boost engaged. Love that boost. Can be subtle or pushed hard.
Buy a Red-Eye, it's a tool you should always have, and provides a D.I. for when you're really screwed, or a passive pickup that just can't drive anything. It's got a red button on top which is really satisfying to press, and that alone is worth, like, $50, right?
Thanks to Gsus4 in Sydney for supplying the unit! Much appreciated.
    JSx

Excellent picking, all five fingers and very clean. I'm going to take a shot in the dark and just hazard a guess that the guitar is drop tuned... Thanks for the demo. I'm about to run down to the music store to see if the used Fire Eye Red Eye duo is still in the case.

Great review, tone and playing! Would plugging a tuner pedal work right before the input? Is there any noise from phantom power that you know of? Also is there a ground lift on the unit?

hey can you elaborate more on your setup you said that you are going xlr output from your EV ZLX12P loudspeaker and then From the parallel XLR output on the EV, I've plugged into a Roland GO:Mixer which was plugged directly into my iPhone 7 Plus so are you plugin from the GO mixer to the headphone jack on the iphone ? how are you recording this on iphone what software ??

Nice demo. Thank you. By the way, Ojai is pronounced O Hi. I know because I have family members who live in Ojai, California. I guess it’s a Native American name.

The sound for this video needs a preamp.
