Just a correction, sensei: The protector scoring system (PSS) is set to require a certain amount of force to score based on the following: Gender, Weight Class, Age. Just a touch doesn't score. The highest damage required to score is in the men's +87 kg category (heavyweight).
You should look around for a local dojang that has the Daedo PSS (the one used in Olympic competition) and check it out in training as well as a few rounds. The body protector and helmet detect contact and pressure, each person wears a sock that has magnets in it so the only way to score with a kick is to hit with the ankle bone down with the required amount of pressure. Punches are scored manually by referees (2 out of 3 have to agree it was hard enough to warrant a point) and the +2 for spins is also manually added by corner referees. The center referee calls penalties (+1 point for the other person).
Scoring on a stationary person vs one who is moving away from the strike or moving with the strike can make a big difference in scoring chances.
I know you like to shit on Olympic TKD in a partially serious partially for fun way but you should check out some professional equipment and national level competitors some time. You can probably find a high level heavyweight in your area. If you can't find a Daedo set up the only other one used officially by World Taekwondo is called the KPNP PSS.
Also if you ever want to check out Kukkiwon TKD applied outside of the Olympic rule set look up someone like Kwon Kicker Micah Brock or Master Lee Dong Hee of Kangjin TKD. It's all the same skills but with more open rules. This is the style that seems more popular with adults in Korea and it's definitely catching on here in North America too.

For clarity, they both trained 15+ years ago so they haven't trained for years. They only had like a week of prep leading up to this. If you happened to skip past it, when Linus caught Dennis' kick, the way Dennis went down on Linus' leg aggravated an old knee injury Linus has had for years. He could hardly bend his knee for days later due to it potentially buckling. Both of them powered through. TKD Tech Champs! 😆
I'm looking forward to the rematch they've agreed to - better training, better prep, better match. I wonder if this will kick off a TDK Tech Tournament for all techies on RUclips. 🤔That would be fun - especially if it went full MMA. Everyone knows you gotta go full MMA!

As a Ex-TKD instructor I always found the scoring arbitrary at this skill level. The rules used to be to score a strike it had to land with enough force to basically move you or affect your body position. Many low level competitors don't hit with enough force to do that so it was kinda up to the ref. Unless you are taught how to bully in the clinch and strike off the break you often got guys with low guards standing in punching range not knowing what to do next (rarely is a punch deemed strong enough to score). Also the tendacy to put your kicking foot down in front of you to chase the retreating opponent causes a lot of this awkward punching range stalemate. Eventually you learn how to angle off or punch to clinch and strike off the break. I have no clue how or why they came up with this rule set. I think they are talking a rematch with more kickboxing style rules.

they talked about this video in their wan show vlog thing they do (kind of a behind the scenes chat about the various videos they made throughout the week) and a lot of the discussion was regarding the rules and how they were 'followed' or not, and gaming the system, rather than fighting 'properly'. i think they were as confused as you regarding the calls/points awarded, and both kinda trying to figure out what was going to work or not. he also mentioned that he wants to do it again. you should hit him up and secretly train linus, considering dennis had a glory kickboxer helping him.

Your allowed to punch to the head. At least in a school setting. the Olympics on the other hand... nope. So they might just be following more of a kick boxing like kinda rule.
Where I train, we punch to the head and body, and kick to the head, body and inner thigh. We can take down people too. It would be nice if that were more what they showed, but because of the Olympics and the rules they set, that's what's popular.
