When I trained in karate, my sensei refused to have different ranking systems for children and adults. He also judged all students by the same criteria with one exception; he would not test a student for a black belt until they reached age 18. Some students may have felt like they were being held back, but overall it did mean that a 14 year old with a blue belt would have a similar level of skill and ability in our dojo as a 25 year old with the same belt. In local tournaments our students performed quite well, especially in sparring, and in the national tournaments we did, our students also performed quite well, often placing for medals in multiple categories. Watching these videos, I am just disappointed at how staged they are, because I have seen kids legitimately trounce adults in point sparring without the use of video editing and choreography

My Sensei also would not test a child for a black belt because he believes that a person needs the mental capacity to understand the power to kill, and that does not come in the early years. As for small children and black belts, he would say 'why wear a black belt if you can be hit over the head a knocked out by the average adult'. I would never disagree with my Sensei, and I strongly agree with him about children and teenagers not having black belts.

When I did Shorinji Kempo, we had a kid black belt (I think he was a couple of years older than the rest of us, which would have made him 13/14 when he ranked for black belt) but that dude had serious skills, and the belt was well deserved.

totally agree - there was a case here in the Philippines several years ago (all I remember it was before COVID, so maybe 2018-19). where this kid who's in the National team for Taekwondo was using his skill as a bullying tool. His older brother wasn't any better. So one time he cornered this other kid in the bathroom and said "choose, dignity or pain (roughly translated). If you choose dignity, just come over here and lick my shoe." Kid stood his ground and you can pretty much guess what happened to the other kid. The kicker was that the bully's parents were influential so he was effectively untouchable. Long story short - totally agree that a student has to understand that a Black Belt turns him into a weapon and he has to be prepared for it.

We had a system where you had to be 16 to get a black belt but if you earned one before, it was a “junior black belt” with a white stripe through it. You could test for an adult black the day you turned 16 if you wanted to. I kinda like that system. As an adult I train BJJ and they won’t even give you a blue belt until you turn 16. They’re way more strict about it and I think for good reason. In BJJ, a blue belt means you can take pretty much anybody who’s untrained (ignoring massive differences in size, age, and athleticism of course). I think the worst thing you can do is hand a black belt to someone who couldn’t use their skills to defend themselves against an untrained attacker.

My 10 yr old son has been training Gracie JJ for nearly 3 yrs. He's had well over 200 hours of Submission grappling and is starting IBJJF tournaments in the 90.9LB division next week. He's also been training in Muay Thai for a little over a year, and was almost a Kenpo green belt when he stopped to focus on the former two arts. Even with his training, a medium sized adult male with ill intentions could still overpower him, but they would have a very hard time and my hope is that he'd put up such a fight that they might give up or he'd create enough of a scene that they won't want the attention.

Seth I have to say that I agree with your take on youth blackbelts 100%. I started learning martial arts a few months before turning six (if I remember right) and I earned my black belt about sixish years later when I was 11. Does that make my belt invalid? no. do I understand that it's just a belt ? yes.
I feel like there's a big difference in those kids who earn their black belts young and just quit vs those who earn it and keep training. like yes, I got my black belt at 11 but I'm still training now at almost 19. i've taught for a little over four years now, i've joined a whole new style while in college (Judo!!), started going to some of the strictly BJJ classes over the summer, experimented with martial arts tricking, and all in all I just keep learning.
Not trying to talk bad about those kids who earn it and just leave, but you have to admit that there's a difference between earning a blackbelt as a kid and dropping the sport vs those who earn the belt at a younger age and continue training. I feel like those who just drop the sport after earning the belt don't understand the true "meaning" of the belt, that it's just a belt.
not sure if all this makes sense but yeah, that's my take on all of this

I like how the belts are in bjj. How it can take a ridiculous amount of time to get a black belt, and how they separate belts for kids (in bjj thats 15 and under). In bjj if you get a black belt in 10 years then you did really good. Most people it can take even longer.

Size counts for a ton. When my youngest was 5, he entered into a local TKD competition. He had about 2 weeks of practice. The final score of his first sparring match was 37-2 . My son had the 2.
The other kid was also knocked to the ground 8 times and limped off the mat. It is not what you think though (probably). The other kid was very skilled. However, the conservation of momentum are no respector of belt color. Any time the other kid landed any kind of push kick, he would be the one flying backwards because he was half my son's size.

@@Cailean_MacCoinnich I take it you are not familiar with Martial Arts. Little kid Tae Kwon Do matches do not resemble fights in the least. I have coached over 60 youth sports teams in 5 different sports. I've coached kids as young as 3 and as old as 18. While not a master by any means, I have several years experience in Wrestling, Jujitsu, and Tae Kwon Do.
Kids are far more likely to get hurt playing soccer or basketball that Tae Kwon Do. At the younger ages they even looks more like fights than Ta Kwon Do matches too :)
I actually took up Jujitsu because it is actually a comparatively low impact sport that is easier on my bad joints than many other non martial arts options.
The level of discipline, respect, and self confidence that children can gain from studying martial arts is second to none.
Finally, studying martial arts actually decreases the probability that kids will get into a fight. They have the discipline and respect not to start fights with others. The confidence prevents others from trying to start a with them.

@@Cailean_MacCoinnich I'm gonna take that one seriously. So I live in India. I started sending my twin girls to Karate because the local dojo sensei would take kids at that age under 4 years. But the general idea was self defence because they would grow up in India. And schools here even paying ones are insane. It's not kansas. It's points karate so the other critique I'd get on line is that its a waste of time for self defence. So can't be both though eh. What I have noticed after their first competition. They have two types katas or dance forms really which I hope you agree is not a reportable thing. And Kumite. Technically that's sparring but for girls in Bangalore at the competition we attended and also in training its more about taking turns and tapping with control perhaps showing off extension when attempting kicks. There is no animosity or aggression until girls get to over seven years old. Then I don't know what to do. They have shin pads gloves booties which I think protect their hands and feet chest protectors and if they wanted to enter competitions by 8 years old which would be State level and if they won gold qualify them for nationals I'd invest in a better helmet. They wouldnt' get concussed at that age but it would protect their eyes. And the shock of getting a punch or kick to the face. I guess if they lived in the West it would be less important. But they will be growing up in India. And you'd have to stay here to see the culture that exists here the lack of a professional police force that investigates crime or serves a community and then your comment might be but is this enough. Next year I'm sending them for Kalaripayattu on the weekends and incorporating BJJ/MMA kids self defence classes with less Karate from age 7. But I'm guessing you live in the West. You could try reporting me in Bangalore but I have no idea whom you would report me to or how you might go about doing that. And I don't think you care about my girls much when push comes to shove. Doing what I think may prove best for them but winging it here

My daughter is 9 years old. It took her 6 years to earn her black belt (World Taekwondo). During our school's black belt ceremony we're told we have only learned the basics and this is just the beginning. From this point forward it's time to work on refining those techniques we've learned while continuing to learn new things as we progress to second degree (and beyond). We know that our black belt doesn't automatically mean we can kick someone's ass.
Our school practices full contact sparring (with protective gear). Though, "full contact" depends on the confidence and attitude of the students (kids and adults alike). A lot of kids don't seem to understand what it is to fight so they don't put in a lot of effort to land punches and kicks. My wife and I push our daughter to do her best by keeping her guard up, look for openings to attack, do combinations of techniques, etc. We push the other students to do the same. Sometimes to the detriment of our daughter... she took a pretty solid side kick to the throat at her last sparring class and had trouble breathing for a few minutes. Sometimes punches to the head are not allowed (typical WT sparring rules) and when we're using boxing gloves they are.
We used to take TKD classes 5 days/week (Mon-Fri). We added a tumbling class for our daughter on Tue. so removed her from TKD class that day to give her a little break. She also has a tricking class on Sun. My wife and I are down to 4 days/week for TKD. We added kickboxing on Sat. mornings (all three of us) for more full contact sparring experience so we removed Thu. TKD classes. We need the break!

It depends on what you mean by "a huge advantage." The way I would use the phrase would be that the side with the huge advantage will win a super-majority of the encounters. The more fair interpretation of it may be that in tallying each side's strengths and weaknesses, the black belt may account for a large tally in favor of its holder with no mention of overall likelihood of victory, though.
In my experience boxing, weight classes are a thing for a reason. I don't care how good an 80 pound kid is at striking, they're never knocking a 215 pound adult out cold without weapons. If you put someone in an arm bar, but they can bicep curl you, the arm bar isn't going to hurt them even if it's delivered with perfect form because they're just going to fold you in half. Now the black belt may be a huge advantage in that it will allow the child to identify opportunities to strike and escape.
Where I see the huge advantage for a child black belt against an evil adult isn't against the evil adult, it's over an otherwise identical child without the black belt. The chance of escape or creating enough commotion to affect a rescue increases with training. The chance of victory remains low, but is increased, and the chance of holding out for help is also increased.

I think kicking with the foot is entirely dependent on how clear your shot is/the speed in which someone can place meaningful barriers. Kicking at head height for example you're far more likely to meet forearm than any other bony structure, sure you could say the skull, but let's be real nobody is defending a headkick with their forehead. As you go further down the body the risk of hitting large promenent bones increases. The elbows (maybe even knees) for the mid section, and the entire knee, shin when facing leg kicks.

5:10 breaking boards with the top of the foot is crazy, and that foot protection will only make it more difficult to break. When you break with a circular kick (mawashi/dollyo) you have to strike with the ball of the foot.

    • @elevenb6967
      @elevenb6967 Год назад

No, you don't. As Muay Thai conditions the shin, karate can (and does) condition the instep. I've seen many martial artists destroy boards with the top of their foot, without the slightest issue.

@@sommerelb8198 thats great, not gonna lie. to many teachers of traditional martial arts are way to delusional. i´ve been to a karate school in my early days of kickboxing because i was a very inexperienced martial artist and thought i could learn a few things there with some cross training since i also had the free time to do it and it turned out to be one of those schools where no one ever touches anyone and theres a big focus on doing self defense stuff in slow motion without any resistence and kata´s... but the way the teacher (or sensei as he liked to call himself) presented himself and the ability of his students was like they are absolute beasts but have to avoid any fight ever because they could get in trouble with the law when they found out that they trained here since they learned how to be so vicious with their bodys while in reality every single one of them where completely dead after the relatively basic warm up drills in the beginning and i could have beaten up all of them with my 4 months of kickboxing at this point. moral of the story... dont trust anyone who trys to tell you his fists are registered as weapons and cant run a mile without getting a cardiac arrest. (oh and by the way, i know that normal karate schools arent like that, in most of them you dont really learn how to fight either. but i am aware that my case was a bit extreme for a karate school)

Getting a black belt is certainly an achievement but it has no link to fighting skill, self defence skill or anything like that. In my opinion the achievement of obtaining a black belt is like getting through army training and then after that you can go to war (aka: the real work starts if you're willing to keep pursuing your art).

I'm a 6'1, 190 lbs, first degree black belt, and I train in multiple styles. If I was fighting someone several times my size and strength, I'd still not bet on myself. It would literally be similar to me fighting a gorilla. Don't get me wrong, I've sparred people several inches taller, and significantly stronger than me, be the difference between that girl and that man is significant.
In a knife fight though, size matters less :D

There will always be someone out there who is naturally bigger and tougher. In the context of this video, that shouldn't matter.
Amanda Nunes is absolutely fantastic, but she couldn't hope to fight Francis Ngannou. That doesn't make her skills any less than they are.

I mean I've kind felt ashamed about getting my black belt when I was 12 but I made sure I ingrained it in my mindset to kind of push my capabilities to the utmost intensity, and with days which I just get tired because of all the conditioning I get frustrated and embarassed because I get really sloppy and not up to "black belt level" standard. I have seen the stereotypical child black belts and I do think that some may need to be reevaluated, but it really depends as (with the influence of the martial arts community crapping on TKD) I've kind of been trying to prove that TKD is at least not so much a dumpster pile or a daycare as a but worthy sport to the very least.
As for the Olympic TKD... I hate front leg kickers.

Just gotta say, found your channel tonight and love your attitude of “obviously a kid’s physically weaker, but they’re training, so why not make them black belts?” Even at 10, my parents were having a hell of a time controlling me. Imagining having some legit training… would (having worked at a dojo) probably meant I’d have been getting into stupid fights less often.

From what I was taught about black belts it's evidence of knowledge and discipline to demonstrate dedication to learning an art. The black belt is not mastery, it's the point at which you begin really learning what your martial art is. If the black belt were evidence of mastery, you'd not need ranks above black belt. There is a weird mysticism (dare I say elitism) surrounding the significance of what a black is and what it isn't. If a kid demonstrates knowledge and discipline (just like any other practitioner of the art) then why should they not be able to test for and receive their black belt?
Also an MMA trained fighter, even a child, who can't land a single punch on an untrained adult? I think she needs a better instructor.

My sister was sixteen-years older than I. She would beat the crap out of me just because she could. We move forward thirty-five years and my sister, through her drug and sex abuse, needs a kidney. We're the same blood type (B, RH negative), not the rarest blood type, but rare enough it's makes finding a match quite difficult. I waited around until her need became critical. I spoke with her nephrologist and explained our history as estranged siblings. Her nephrologist looked at me and said: "whoa man, let her die". so, I did.
